Detection Capabilities of Randomly-Deployed sensor Fields

distributed sensor fields have recently gained popularity as a means for detecting intruders moving through a protected area of the ocean. We characterize the detection capabilities of a network of randomly-deployed sensors with varying sensing capabilities. We develop a framework for analytically approximating the probability that such a sensor field detects a constant course target moving through the region as a function of the number of sensors deployed and the statistical properties that govern the sensing range. Analytical and empirical results indicate that, when the total sensing area is fixed, a set of smaller distributed sensors can achieve significantly improved detection performance relative to a single large sensor. We also study the relationship between coverage of a region of interest and likelihood of detecting a constant course intruder moving through that region. We derive expressions for the average number of sensors required to achieve a prescribed likelihood of detection and level of coverage and conclude that detection and coverage are fundamentally different characterizations of the capabilities of a sensor field. In fact, the number of sensors required to achieve a particular detection level may be several orders of magnitude smaller than that required to achieve the same level of coverage.

On exploiting propagation delays for passive target localization using bearings-only measurements

For many cases, target localization accuracy can significantly improve by accounting for the propagation delay between the target source and the sensors. This paper considers when it is advantageous to compensate for the propagation delay for the case of a network of nodes where each node consists of an array of sensors. Each node calculates a direction of arrival (DOA) from the raw data, and these DOAs are combined to localize the target. First, we consider the case when no prior data are given and the localization occurs using DOA measurements from a single snapshot. Such localization methods are necessary to initiate a target track. Finally, we investigate the case where an extended Kalman filter is used to aggregate measurements over multiple snapshots. (C) 2004 The Franklin Institute. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Sensing-Based distributed State Estimation for Cooperative Multiagent Systems

distributed estimation has proven to be suitable for many multiagent system (MAS) applications, yet it relies heavily on information exchange via a costly and vulnerable communication network. This paper proposes a sensing-based distributed estimation algorithm that enables a local monitoring agent to expand its estimation capabilities beyond its sensing range without needing communication overhead. The key to expanding the limited sensing range is to incorporate the MAS's cooperative control protocol, allowing the monitoring agent to infer the state of out-of-range agents from the behavior of in-range agents that may interact with them. Then, the state estimation for out-of-range agents is performed through a Bayesian approach that considers the correlation of state estimates between in-range and out-of-range agents. This approach of only taking sensor measurements of local monitoring agents without interagent communications can successfully compensate for the existing communication-based distributed estimation methods. The performance of the proposed sensing-based distributed estimation algorithm is theoretically verified and demonstrated with numerical simulations of a multivehicle formation flight example.

Consensus-Based Information Filtering in distributed LiDAR sensor Network for Tracking Mobile Robots

A distributed state observer is designed for state estimation and tracking of mobile robots amidst dynamic environments and occlusions within distributed LiDAR sensor networks. The proposed novel framework enhances three-dimensional bounding box detection and tracking utilizing a consensus-based information filter and a region of interest for state estimation of mobile robots. The framework enables the identification of the input to the dynamic process using remote sensing, enhancing the state prediction accuracy for low-visibility and occlusion scenarios in dynamic scenes. Experimental evaluations in indoor settings confirm the effectiveness of the framework in terms of accuracy and computational efficiency. These results highlight the benefit of integrating stationary LiDAR sensors' state estimates into a switching consensus information filter to enhance the reliability of tracking and to reduce estimation error in the sense of mean square and covariance.

Feasibility Study of Underwater Acoustic Communications Between Buried and Bottom-Mounted sensor Network Nodes

This paper presents a feasibility study of underwater communications between buried sensor network nodes. To investigate this problem, two experiments have been conducted: where some sensor nodes are buried in the sediment, and where all sensor nodes are buried in the sediment. The orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) communications have been chosen to test underwater communications because of its unique strength in handling transmissions over long dispersive channels. Since the existing OFDM schemes for underwater communications are designed to achieve high data rate communications within the water column and are not adequate for communications between sensors placed on the ocean floor, a new low-complexity OFDM receiver has been proposed. The proposed receiver performs frame-by-frame channel estimation, residual phase tracking, diversity combining, and data demodulation. This approach is adopted because of its effectiveness in applications with very fast varying channels and a large number of propagation paths. It is demonstrated that the error-free performance can be achieved between buried sensors using the proposed OFDM receiver.

A REVIEW OF MECHANICAL MOVE SPRINKLER IRRIGATION CONTROL AND AUTOMATION TECHNOLOGIES

Electronic sensors, equipment controls, and communication protocols have been developed to meet the growing interest in using center pivot and lateral move irrigation systems to deliver different irrigation depths to management zones based on previous production levels, soil texture, or topography. Onboard and field-distributed sensors can collect data necessary for real-time irrigation management decisions and transmit the information directly or through wireless networks to the main control panel or base computer Equipment controls necessary to alter water application depth to meet the management criteria for relatively small management zones are now commercially available from irrigation system manufacturers and after-market suppliers. Communication systems such as cell phones, satellite radios, and internet-based systems are also available and allow the operator to query the main control panel or base computer from any location at any time. Selection of the communications system for remote access depends on local and regional topography and cost relative to other methods. Recent developments in the center pivot sprinkler industry have led to contractual relationships between after-market suppliers and irrigation system manufacturers that should support further development of technologies necessary to improve the management of water, nutrient and pesticide applications. Although the primary focus of this article is center pivot sprinkler irrigation, much of the discussion could also apply to lateral move sprinkler irrigation systems.

Bionanomaterials and Bioinspired Nanostructures for Selective Vapor Sensing

At present, monitoring of air at the workplace, in urban environments, and on battlefields;exhaled air from medical patients;air in packaged food containers;and so forth can be accomplished with different types of analytical instruments. Vapor sensors have their niche in these measurements when an unobtrusive, low-power, and cost-sensitive technical solution is required. Unfortunately, existing vapor sensors often degrade their vapor-quantitation accuracy in the presence of high levels of interferences and cannot quantitate several components in complex gas mixtures. Thus, new sensing approaches with improved sensor selectivity are required. This technological task can be accomplished by the careful design of sensing materials with new performance properties and by coupling these materials with the suitable physical transducers. This review is focused on the assessment of the capabilities of bionanomaterials and bioinspired nanostructures for selective vapor sensing. We demonstrate that these sensing materials can operate with diverse transducers based on electrical, mechanical, and optical readout principles and can provide vapor-response selectivity previously unattainable by using other sensing materials. This ability for selective vapor sensing provides opportunities to significantly impact the major directions in development and application scenarios of vapor sensors.

Position calibration of microphones and loudspeakers in distributed computing platforms

In this paper, we present a novel algorithm to automatically determine the relative three-dimensional (3-D) positions of audio sensors and actuators in an ad-hoc distributed network of heterogeneous general purpose computing platforms such as laptops, PDAs, and tablets. A closed form approximate solution is derived, which is further refined by minimizing a nonlinear error function. Our formulation and solution accounts for the lack of temporal synchronization among different platforms. We compare two different estimators, one based on the time of flight and the other based on time difference of flight. We also derive an approximate expression for the mean and covariance of the implicitly defined estimator using the implicit function theorem and approximate Taylors' series expansion. The theoretical performance limits for estimating the sensor 3-D positions are derived via the Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) and analyzed, with respect to the number of sensors and actuators, as well as their geometry. We report extensive simulation results and discuss the practical details of implementing our algorithms in a real-life system.

An Intelligent sensor Placement Method to Reach a High Coverage in Wireless sensor networks

Adequate coverage is one of the main problems for sensor networks. The effectiveness of distributed wireless sensor networks highly depends on the sensor deployment scheme. Optimizing the sensor deployment provides sufficient sensor coverage and saves cost of sensors for locating in grid points. This article applies the modified binary particle swarm optimization algorithm for solving the sensor placement in distributed sensor networks. PSO is an inherent continuous algorithm, and the discrete PSO is proposed to be adapted to discrete binary space. In the distributed sensor networks, the sensor placement is an NP-complete problem for arbitrary sensor fields. One of the most important issues in the research fields, the proposed algorithms will solve this problem by considering two factors: the complete coverage and the minimum costs. The proposed method on sensors surrounding is examined in different area. The results not only confirm the successes of using the new method in sensor placement, also they show that the new method is more efficiently compared to other methods like Simulated Annealing(SA), PBIL and LAEDA.

Joint Collaboration and Compression Design for Random Signal Detection in Wireless sensor networks

In this work, we propose a joint collaboration-compression framework for the random signal detection problem in a resource constrained wireless sensor network (WSN). Specifically, we propose a framework where the local sensors first collaborate (via a linear collaboration matrix) with each other. Then a subset of sensors linearly compress their aggregated information before communicating with the fusion center (FC). We propose a novel metric called generalized deflection coefficient (GDC) for evaluating the detection performance which is shown to be tightly upper bounded by the Kullback-Leibler divergence for Gaussian observations. We jointly design the linear collaboration and compression strategies under power constraints via alternating maximization of the proposed GDC metric. Finally, numerical results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework.
