distributed software development process has dramatically changed over the last decade due to the integration of social collaborative development environment. The pull-based software development methodology made its mark in the open source distributed development as it is a convenient and effective system to organise collaborative contribution. Code reviews for software projects have been a best practice in software engineering. With the emerge of pull-based software development methodology, code reviewers faced difficulty in reviewing the contributions because of the higher number of incoming pull requests. In order to address this problem, reviewer recommendation systems have been implemented. In these systems, textual data mining techniques have been applied. This paper focuses on identifying the different approaches in terms of textual data mining used in the domain of the reviewer recommendations in pull-based software development and identifies their drawbacks and room for improvement. This paper contains the initial part of ongoing research and in the future, we hope to use this knowledge to come up with a solution that addresses the identified drawbacks and the identified improvements.

Age stereotypes in distributed software development: The impact of culture on age-related performance expectations

Context Due to demographic changes in most developed countries, distributed software development (DSD) teams might suffer new barriers above and beyond the well-known cultural and distance-based challenges. Remarkably, six out of the twelve most important barriers for DSD are related to typical problems induced by both cultural and age diversity. Age stereotypes can hinder communication, trust, knowledge exchange and coordination in software development. They have been studied based on individual level whereas context-related factors such as culture have been less in focus yet. Objective: We examine the effects of national and organizational culture on age stereotypes. Therein we explore the conditions and processes that might increase age stereotypes. Method: We conducted a quantitative study with 457 employees in two software development companies in China, Germany, Poland and Bulgaria. Results: Results show a significant bias in performance expectations favoring middle-aged employees over younger and older employees across national cultures. Stereotypes toward older employees are more negative in Eastern Europe and China than in Germany, while stereotypes toward younger employees are more negative in Germany than in China and Eastern Europe. Lower average team age and lower contact frequency foster stereotypes in China and Eastern Europe. Negative stereotypes can be buffered by an organizational culture which values team achievement and trust over individual performance and control. Conclusions: The study advances the literature by integrating value- and schema-based approaches when examining cultural influences, extending the stereotype content model and the situated dynamics framework. Moreover, it may help finding new solutions for human-related problems in DSD based on intangible barriers that hinder development processes. Experimental Evaluation of the Virtual Environment Efficiency for distributed software development

At every software design stage nowadays, there is an acute need to solve the problem of effective choice of libraries, development technologies, data exchange formats, virtual environment systems, characteristics of virtual machines. Due to the spread of various kinds of devices and the popularity of Web platforms, lots of systems are developed not for the universal installation on a device (box version), but for a specific architecture with the subsequent provision of web services. Under these conditions, the only way for estimating the efficiency parameters at the design stage is to conduct various kinds of experiments to evaluate the parameters of a particular solution. Using the example of the Web platform of digital psychological tools, the methods for experimental parameter evaluation were developed in the article. The mechanisms and technologies for improving the efficiency of the Vagrant and Docker cloud virtual environment were also proposed in the paper. A set of basic criteria for evaluating the effectiveness of the configuration of the virtual development environment has been determined to be rapid deployment;increase in the speed and decrease in the volume of resources used;increase in the speed of data exchange between the host machine and the virtual machine. The results of experimental estimates of the parameters that define the formulated efficiency criteria are given as: processor utilization involved (percentage);the amount of RAM involved (GB);initialization time of virtual machines (seconds);time to assemble the component completely (Build) and to reassemble the component (Watch) (seconds). To improve the efficiency, a file system access driver based on the NFS protocol was studied in the paper.

distributed software development has become an established software development paradigm that provides several advantages but it presents significant challenges to share and understand the knowledge required for developing software. Organizations are expected to implement appropriate practices to address knowledge management. From the existing studies, it is been analyzed that there were problems of collaboration between distributed team members which effects knowledge sharing. Documentation problem (such as missing, poor and outdated documents) and knowledge vaporization (as much of the conversation and communication is done via chat and retrieving it later is a great headache) is a major challenge in distributed software development in knowledge sharing. Our main objective is to improve knowledge sharing between distributed team members and prevent knowledge vaporization and reduced documentation problem that will help in improving software development process in a distributed environment. To eliminate these challenges we proposed a framework which deals with documentation and knowledge vaporization problems and evaluated it through industrial case study and evaluate the framework performance in real-life context where actually the problem arises, we conducted the interviews and analyzed the data using thematic analysis and SUS questioner we came to the conclusion on team members response that they are satisfied with our proposed solution and it improved their knowledge sharing process. Our intention was to improve the knowledge process with our proposed solution and the evaluation showed that we resolved these problems.

Context: One of the leading challenges in distributed software development (DSD) is to communicate correctly and promptly, as factors such as physical distance and lack of face-to-face contact can hinder this process. In this context, the Communication Maturity Model (C2M) was proposed as an option to support the improvement of communication in DSD. But this maturity model could not be effectively used in organizations, due to the absence a specific C2M based assessment method. Objective: This work aims to present the Standard C2M Based Assessment Method (SCBAM) in its basic dimension, the Basic Standard C2M Based Assessment Method (SCBAM-B). An assessment method to determine the maturity level of communication in DSD organizations, based on the C2M model. Method: The SCBAM-B was designed according to a methodology that included a review of the DSD literature, maturity and capacity models, evaluation methods, the development of a software tool, and evaluation with experts. Results: The SCBAM-B was perceived by experts as a relevant approach for assessing the communication level in organizations and propose a path for improvements. Conclusions: For being lightweight and capable of automation, the SCBAM-B has the potential to help the communication improvement in DSD organizations, in the light of the C2M model.

Context: Communication plays an essential role in the professional software development, as it stands as one of the pillars of this collaborative activity. Communication is also one of the leading challenges in distributed software development (DSD) teams, which may be hindered by this business model. Still, little is known about how communication occurs in this specific context. Objective: This work aims to present a doctoral research proposal for studying communication in DSD teams to propose a new theory, and thereby, establish a theoretical base for future studies. Additionally, to stimulate discussions about the relevance of this proposal. Method: I propose Grounded Theory research. Results: To help in the consolidation of this study gap, I present the preliminary results of a non-extensive literature review. Conclusions: Based on preliminary findings, I conclude that a new, and specific communication theory in DSD may have its place in literature.

software organizations are increasingly combining agile methodologies and distributed software development (DSD) for efficiently and effectively built software products. There are numerous challenges associated with scaling agile methods in a distributed environment. Our study is intended to explore and prioritize the challenges for scaling agile practices in the DSD environment. This study was divided into 3 stages. In the first stage, 22 challenges were identified from literature review and grouped into 4 categories: management, team, technology, and process based on discussion with experts. In the second stage, an online questionnaire study was conducted to validate the identified challenges. Finally, analytic hierarchy process method was used to prioritize challenges and their categories based on their relative importance. The results highlighted that management is a most significant category as compared with the other categories. Similarly, lack of management commitments, lack of effective communication, lack of knowledge sharing, etc are identified as the most significant challenges that need to be focused by the organizations for scaling agile methodologies. On the basis of the research findings, we could conclude that the identified challenges along with their categories provide a robust framework to scale agile methodologies in the DSD environment.

Risk management in distributed software development (DSD) is a well-researched area, providing different methods for assessing risks and suggesting control strategies. However, some of these methods are narrow in scope, only considering few risks, and are too complex to be used in practice whereas others provide many rules and guidelines which are often implicit. Moreover, the knowledge related to risks in DSD is scattered over different publications which make it difficult to find relevant information to be used in practice. This research aims to develop an automated decision support system to aid practitioners in assessing risks and deciding on suitable control strategies. In order to construct the knowledge base for the proposed decision support system, a systematic literature review (SLR) is conducted. Results of SLR are used to identify required questions, options and set of rules to implement our decision support system (DSS). In total 80 studies were identified from which 49 aspects, 53 questions, and a set of rules are extracted. DSS is evaluated through multiple case studies. The results indicate that the developed DSS supports decision-making process in risk assessment and selection of control strategy.

A Quantitative Framework for Task Allocation in distributed Agile software development

distributed agile software development is a promising paradigm, addressing the necessities of emergent software application markets that are described by huge user base and small time to market characteristics. A key decision involved during the development process, is task allocation to team members. An appropriate task-member assignment facilitates project management, lessens the complexities and influences chances of project success. Task allocation becomes a more challenging activity in a distributed agile software development due to insufficient understanding of different factors and dependencies involved. We propose a task allocation framework comprising of two phases: one, identifying factors and dependencies that strongly influence the task allocation decision;two, proposing a quantitative method that allocates tasks to team members who best match the task requirements. Task requirements are expressed as capabilities, catering for different aspects, such as technical, personal, and environment. Our method stays transparent to the targeted objectives, in this case the best match. Other objectives, such as quality and cost may be introduced conveniently;even multiple objectives can be addressed. Such a method also allows quality evaluation of task-member assignment during and after the project completion, toward minimizing related risks.

Code review is a potential means of improving software quality. To be effective, it depends on different factors, and many have been investigated in the literature to identify the scenarios in which it adds quality to the final code. However, factors associated with distributed software development, which is becoming increasingly common, have been little explored. Geographic distance can impose additional challenges to the reviewing process. We thus in this paper present the results of a quantitative study of the effectiveness of code review in a distributed software project involving 201 members. We investigate factors that can potentially influence the outcomes of peer code review. Our results show that a high number of changed lines of code tends to increase the review duration with a reduced number of messages, while the number of involved teams, locations, and participant reviewers generally improve reviewer contributions, but with a severe penalty to the duration.
