One of the most critical activities in distributed project management is the allocation of tasks among remote teams. In distributed software development projects, to allocate a task for a team in any of the locations, the project manager needs consider several factors such as team maturity and time zone difference among the sites. Deciding which task to allocate for each team constitutes a decision-making task. This decision is usually made subjectively. The verbal decision analysis is an approach based on solving problems through multi-criteria qualitative analysis, which means it considers the analysis of subjective criteria. This paper describes the application of a verbal decision analysis methodology called ORCLASS to classify the most relevant factors that the project managers should take into account when allocating tasks in distributed software development projects.

The main aim of this thesis is to explore the industrial practices of re- quirements negotiation and conflict resolution within distributed soft- ware development. The motivation for this study is to get insight of the industrial practices in particular interventions (Communication tools, Models, Communication media) that used by practitioners to resolve requirements negotiation and conflicts resolution between clients and suppliers, since many researchers purposed interventions in the litera- ture for requirements negotiation and conflicts resolution in distributed software development. Context: In Requirements Engineering, requirements negotiation and conflict resolution are crucial activities to achieve a common ground between clients and suppliers, it is considered as one of the crucial fac- tors for delivering successful software. However, the shift from tradi- tional collocated practices to a distributed environment offers both ben- efits and drawbacks which were studied earlier by researcher, but sur- prisingly there are few studies with insight of exploring the distributed requirements negotiations and conflict resolution practices. This re- search investigates the state of requirements negotiation and conflict resolution activities in distributed software development with an in- sight on their importance and relevance to this research area. Objectives: Overall goal of this thesis is to understand how re- quirements negotiations and conflict resolution are performed in dis- tributed software development, knowing what are the available tools to perform requirements negotiation and conflict resolution, whether these existing tools are good enough to cope up with the industrial practices, knowing most widely used tools, methods and approaches, most importantly does the present research able to bridge the gap with in distributed software development? In the management of distributed software development, project managers face many challenges. Some of the most critical ones are related to the allocation of tasks between remote teams. To assign a task to a site or team, the project manager should take into account several factors such as team's technical expertise and cultural similarities. He or she usually makes this decision in a subjective way. The verbal decision analysis is an approach based on solving problems through multi-criteria qualitative analysis, which means it considers the analysis of subjective criteria. This paper describes the application of verbal decision analysis method ZAPROS III-i to rank order the factors that the project managers should take into account when allocating tasks in distributed software development projects.

distributed software development (DSD) has been discussed by industry and academia for almost two decades now, and, as consequence, there is a large number of empirical scientific papers and industrial reports on it. However, the description of the context in which the empirical study was conducted is not always clear or complete, making the process of searching for empirical evidence burdensome. It becomes difficult to understand or to judge the relevance of study given that DSD scenarios are diverse. What works in one context might not apply to another. To reduce such difficulty, we need, as a research community, to have means to standardize how we report empirical studies and their findings aiming to make them more readily available to practitioners and researchers. In this paper we present an extended taxonomy to classify empirical DSD evidence. We conducted an expert opinion survey with researchers and practitioners to identify elements to compose the taxonomy. Preliminary evaluation of the proposed taxonomy suggests that it can be used to synthesize existing knowledge, to identify gaps in literature, to identify related work and to help researchers who will publish or review further empirical work, as well as practitioners who are interested in published empirical studies.

Agile vs. structured distributed software development: A case study

In globally distributed software development, does it matter being agile rather than structured? To answer this question, this paper presents an extensive case study that compares agile (Scrum, XP, etc.) vs. structured (RUP, waterfall) processes to determine if the choice of process impacts aspects such as the overall success and economic savings of distributed projects, the motivation of the development teams, the amount of communication required during development, and the emergence of critical issues. The case study includes data from 66 projects developed in Europe, Asia, and the Americas. The results show no significant difference between the outcome of projects following agile processes and structured processes, suggesting that agile and structured processes can be equally effective for globally distributed development. The paper also discusses several qualitative aspects of distributed software development such as the advantages of nearshore vs. offshore, the preferred communication patterns, and the effects on project quality.

Increasingly, software organizations are investing in distributed software development. However, this new scenario introduces a number of new challenges and risks. Organizations have sought alternatives to the traditional software development models by applying agile software development practices to distributed development. The key point in a distributed scenario is related to task allocation. This paper conducts a quasi-systematic review of studies of task allocation in distributed software development projects that incorporate agile practices, trying to establish issues for additional research. The study allows us to conclude that there are few works on task classification and prioritization what suggests a fertile area for work.

Collaborative software development requires programmers to coordinate their work and merge individual contributions into a consistent shared code base. Traditionally, coordination follows a series of "update-modify-commit" cycles, where merge conflicts arise upon committing if individual modifications have diverged and must be explicitly reconciled. Researchers have been suggesting that providing timely awareness information about "who's changing what" may not only help deal with conflicts but, more generally, improve the effectiveness of collaboration. This paper investigates the impact of awareness information in the context of globally distributed software development. Based on an analysis of data from 105 student developers constituting 12 development teams located in different countries, we analyze, among other things: 1) the frequency of merge conflicts and insufficient awareness;2) the impact of distribution on team awareness;3) the perceived impact of conflicts and lack of awareness on productivity, motivation, and project punctuality. Our findings include: 1) lack of awareness occurs more frequently than merge conflicts;2) information about remote team members is missing roughly as often as information about co-located ones;3) insufficient awareness information affects more negatively programmer's performance than merge conflicts.

distributed software development is becoming the norm as it is considered a more cost effective way of building software. Organizations seek to reduce development time with concurrent teams spread across geographical spaces as they jointly collaborate in designing, building, and testing the evolving software artefacts. However, the software evolution process is not an easy task, and requires many iterations of testing for ongoing verification and validation with some pre-determined design quality criteria. This is further complicated in distributed teams which interact over lean virtual platforms. This study investigates a distributed environment spread across Japan, India, and New Zealand to inform on how managed test lab model (MTLM) is used to facilitate quality assurance practices for testing of the evolving artefacts within the overall software development lifecycle process. The paper describes the operational aspects of using MTLM as an online framework in which responsibilities are assigned, test scripts are executed, and validation processes are formalized with appropriate use of toolkits to coordinate allocated task breakdowns across the three countries.

GitHub is a distributed code repository and project hosting web site. It is becoming one of the most popular web-based services to host both open-source projects and closed-source projects. In this paper, we review different kinds of version control systems and study the dynamics of GitHub, i.e., the ability and scalability of GitHub to process different requests and provide different services to different GitHub projects and GitHub users. Our study shows that GitHub could handle hundreds of thousands of requests a day for all the projects and thousands of requests for one project. This capability of GitHub makes it suitable for supporting distributed software development.
