We present a 15-month descriptive case study on a real-world Scrum process transformation from a single-site to a distributed development environment in a medium-sized software development organization in Austria. The study describes what effects the scaling to a distributed development had on several key process indicators in one of the organization's major projects. An action research approach has been selected to generate results from an in-depth and first-hand research setting. To increase objectivity and separation of concerns, a two-cycle approach, practitioner-oriented and research-oriented, has been established that aligns with sprint iterations. Many possible adaptations to the Scrum process have been tested over the course of the study. Key findings include that constant customer shipments after each sprint were a turning point in supporting the process of integrating the different sites in the distributed development environment and that the retrospective was an invaluable tool to keep frustration levels low in an ever-changing process environment.

Awareness, the understanding of others' activities, has been widely accepted as a remedy to many collaboration difficulties in distributed organizations. Continuous Awareness (CA), a continuous support for integrated awareness information across space and time, aims to address the need of continuous awareness information in globally distributed software teams. This paper presents an comprehensive evaluation of a CA system, Team Radar, across multiple platforms. The result shows that Team Radar enables developers to receive continuous awareness information effectively and efficiently without the limitations of space and time. Our work provides insights into further exploration of awareness for distributed software development and the design and evaluation of similar tools.

Merge conflicts, which are rather common throughout the process of software development, are more frequent and complex to resolve when using the distributed software development approach, where developers are geographically dispersed. Normally, in the case of workspace merge, the last developer to merge code is responsible of conciliating the changes made in parallel and resolving conflicts. However, the last developer is not always the best team member to complete this task because he or she may not be familiar with the other parts of the code. With this in mind, the goal of this work is to analyze merge profiles of eight software projects and check if the development log is an appropriate source of information for identifying the key participants for collaborative merge. In software production process, a lot of knowledge is created and remain silent. Therefore, it cannot be reused to improve the effectiveness and the efficiency of these processes. This problem is amplified in the case of a distributed production. In fact, distributed software development requires complex context specific knowledge regarding the particularities of different technologies, the potential of existing software, the needs and expectations of the users. This knowledge, which is gained during the project execution, is usually tacit and is completely lost by the company when the production is completed. Moreover, each time a new production unit is hired, despite the diversity of culture and capacity of people, it is necessary to standardize the working skills and methods of the different teams if the company wants to keep the quality level of processes and products. In this context, we used the concept of Knowledge Experience Package (KEP), already specified in previous works and the tool realized to support KEP approach. In this work, we have carried out an experiment in an industrial context in which we compared the software development supported by KEPs with the development achieved without it.

This paper is based on a distributed software development course project conducted over a period of four months (fall, 2012). The aim of the project was to develop a Classroom Face Recognition System(CFRS) to enable instructors automatically to record student attendance. This project was a collaborative effort between students and faculties from Iowa State University, United States of America;Jilin University, Republic of China and King Mongkut's University of Technology, Thailand. We make observations from a Project Management point of view of distributed software development on the benefits and disadvantages of a variety of issues associated with distributed software development, such as of 24 hour work-cycle and expanded pool of workforce. We highlight the main constraints, assumptions, challenges and their corresponding mitigation strategies, and recommend improvements for future educational distributed projects.

Agile software development methodologies are increasingly adopted by organizations because they focus on the client's needs, thus safeguarding business value for the final product. At the same time, as the economy and society move toward globalization, more organizations shift to distributed development of software projects. From this perspective, while adopting agile techniques seems beneficial, there are still a number of challenges that need to be addressed;among these notable is the effective cooperation between the stakeholders and the geographically distributed development team. In addition, data collection and validation for requirements engineering demands efficient processing techniques in order to handle the volume of data as well as to manage different inconsistencies, when the data are collected using online tools. In this paper, we present "PBURC," a patterns-based, unsupervised requirements clustering framework, which makes use of machine-learning methods for requirements validation, being able to overcome data inconsistencies and effectively determine appropriate requirements clusters for optimal definition of software development sprints.

Supporting Collaboration between Customers and Developers: A Framework for distributed, Agile software development

The traditional, in-house software development process is progressively losing its appeal in favor of distributed, multi-site development: this is mainly due to the well-known advantages of the latter, such as higher productivity and lower costs. However, this practice has also some documented disadvantages that are inherent to distance: geographical, temporal and socio-cultural distances between stakeholders can affect communication, coordination and control activities, thus making collaboration very difficult. This would not immediately look as the ideal scenario for applying Agile methodologies, which definitely rely on continuous collaboration between all stakeholders, including (with a very important role) the customers. This paper analyzes issues related to collaboration between customers and developers in a distributed, Agile setting and proposes a framework that defines practices and tools for handling project information and communication activities.

Awareness Support in distributed software development: A Systematic Review and Mapping of the Literature

The developers' physical dispersion in distributed software development (DSD) imposes challenges related to awareness support during collaboration in such scenario. In this paper, we present a systematic literature review and mapping that gathered, analyzed, and classified studies that improve awareness support in DSD, providing an overview of the area. Our initial search returned 1967 papers, of which 91 were identified as reporting some awareness support to DSD. These papers were then analyzed, and classified according to the 3 C collaboration model and to the Gutwin et al. Awareness Framework. Our findings suggest that awareness in DSD is gaining increasingly attention, 71 out of 91 papers were published from 2006 to 2010. Most part of the papers presented tools with some awareness support. The classification showed that the coordination is by far the most supported dimension of the 3C model, while communication is the less explored. It also showed that workspace awareness elements play a central role on DSD collaboration.

The search for quality and improvement in the process of developing software has grown daily, mainly in the distributed software development (DSD) wherein the problems inherent of physical distance become the understanding more complex. This article presents a communication solution for the software projects distributed that uses agile processes. This solution was developed through a take action research conducted in a real DSD scenario. Through the results, the conclusion is that there was a maximization of communication performance and productivity between the groups within the information spread throughout the parts involved.

Cloud-based infrastructure has been increasingly adopted by the industry in distributed software development (DSD) environments. Its proponents claim that its several benefits include reduced cost, increased speed and greater productivity in software development. Empirical evaluations, however, are in the nascent stage of examining both the benefits and the risks of cloud-based infrastructure. The objective of this paper is to identify potential benefits and risks of using cloud in a DSD project conducted by teams based in Helsinki and Madrid. A cross-case qualitative analysis is performed based on focus groups conducted at the Helsinki and Madrid sites. Participants' observations are used to supplement the analysis. The results of the analysis indicated that the main benefits of using cloud are rapid development, continuous integration, cost savings, code sharing, and faster ramp-up. The key risks determined by the project are dependencies, unavailability of access to the cloud, code commitment and integration, technical debt, and additional support costs. The results revealed that if such environments are not planned and set up carefully, the benefits of using cloud in DSD projects might be overshadowed by the risks associated with it.
