We present ARCADE, a consistency and awareness model for distributed software development. In ARCADE, updates to elements of the software project considered important to a programmer are sent to him promptly. As the importance of an element decreases, the frequency with which the programmer is notified about it also decreases. This way, the system provides a selective, continuous and focused level of awareness. As a result, the bandwidth required to propagate events is reduced and intrusion caused by unimportant notifications is minimized. In this paper we present the design of ARCADE, as well as an evaluation of its effectiveness.

software engineering project courses where student teams are geographically distributed can effectively simulate the problems of globally distributed software development (DSD). However, this pedagogical model has proven difficult to adopt or sustain. It requires significant pedagogical resources and collaboration infrastructure. Institutionalizing such courses also requires compatible and reliable teaching partners. The purpose of this workshop is to continue building on our outreach efforts to foster a community of international faculty and institutions committed to developing, teaching and researching DSD. Foundational materials presented will include pedagogical materials and infrastructure developed and used in teaching DSD courses along with results and lessons learned. The third CTGDSD workshop will also focus on publishing workshop results and collaborating with the larger DSD community. Long-range goals include: lowering adoption barriers by providing common pedagogical materials, collaboration infrastructure, and a pool of potential teaching partners from around the globe.

Communication related issues are among the main reasons of the low rate of success in software development, more specifically in distributed projects in which developers are located apart from each other and need to establish virtual relationships to communicate and to collaborate. It is important for a distributed team to be able to communicate properly and in a timely manner. As time goes by and the team gets used to working together and is aware of protocols and working processes, it is expected that communication issues will reduce. Hence, we can say that the communication processes evolve and mature. This paper presents a research under development that aims at developing a Communication Maturity Model for distributed software development inspired in quality maturity models such as the CMMI. The expected model will aim at supporting the management of communication strategies and processes in such software development context.

An adequate task allocation plan is an effective strategy to reduce collaboration issues in distributed software development. Practitioners adopt distinct processes to allocate tasks as well as diverse labels for the same activities and artifacts. This diversity is also found in literature. Task allocation proposals consider different elements and use distinct names for the same concepts. The lack of a standardized vocabulary and of an understanding of the elements involved impairs knowledge acquisition and sharing. Our paper presents a domain ontology to represent concepts related to task allocation in distributed teams. The ontology was defined based on a literature systematic mapping and on the opinion of experts. Preliminary evaluation suggests that the relationships among concepts are valid in real projects. The ontology brings awareness to managers regarding the factors related to task allocation planning and provides researchers with a framework to define processes and design tools to support such activity.

Along the last decade, many companies started using distributed software development (DSD). The distribution of the software development teams over the globe has become almost a rule in large companies. However, in this context, new problems arise, which mainly involve the physical and temporal distance among the participants. Some studies show that deploying a version control system to alleviate this problem is a big challenge for distributed teams. This paper presents a systematic mapping study about works about version control that focus on DSD. We found 29 studies related to DSD version control, published between 2002 and 2012. Using the systematically extracted data from these works, we present challenges, tools, and other solutions proposed to version control in DSD. These results can support practitioners and researchers to better understand and overcome the challenges related do DSD version control, and devise more effective solutions to improve version control in a distributed setting.

This paper presents a literature review of distributed software development (DSD) or global software development (GSD) and software architecture. The main focus is to highlight the current researches, observations, as well as practice directions in these areas. The results have been limited to peer-reviewed conference papers and journal articles, and analysis reports that major studies have been performed in software architecture and global software development, while the empirical studies of interfacing distributed/global software development and software architecture has only received very little attention among researchers up to now. This indicates the need for future research in these areas.

A study of Scrum @ S&P Global in the post-COVID-19 era: Unsuitable for remote work or just flawed implementation?

Context: Although the COVID-19 pandemic is behind us, the seminal challenge for agile teams has not gone away, as "Work-From-Home (WFH) is here to stay". Despite a wealth of literature documenting the challenges of applying agile methods in remote environments, practical guidance for overcoming these challenges remains limited. Furthermore, systematic meta-guidelines to help practitioners develop tailored, context-specific solutions are largely absent. Method: This article reports on an Action Research project conducted at S&P Global 18 months after the company's transition to a WFH model. Objective: The project aimed to evaluate existing adaptations to remote work, identify persistent issues, and develop strategies to address them. Results: Our investigation revealed that while ad-hoc solutions - such as virtualizing Scrum ceremonies and shifting informal in-person conversations to Slack channels - enabled work continuity during the pandemic, they proved insufficient for tackling more complex challenges. Intriguingly, only two ongoing issues stemmed from misalignments between Scrum and remote settings, while the remainder were rooted in flawed Scrum implementation. With our guidance, the participating team not only rediscovered the "Inspect and Adapt" principle but also mastered a systematic approach to method tailoring, enabling them to devise measures that effectively resolved most of their issues. Conclusion: Our study reinforces prior findings indicating the applicability of Scrum beyond its traditional "home ground", while also highlighting the need for remote teams to exhibit even greater discipline in adhering to the Scrum framework to navigate the additional challenges of remote work. We also observed a heightened necessity for more comprehensive documentation in remote settings to compensate for limited immediate access to colleague assistance, which consequently restricts knowledge sharing. Teaching distributed software development (DSD) in project courses where student teams are geographically distributed promises several benefits. One main benefit is that in contrast to traditional classroom courses, students can experience the effects of distribution and the mechanisms for coping with distribution by themselves, therefore understanding their relevance for software development. They can thus learn to take more care of distribution challenges and risks when starting to develop software in industry. However, providing a sustainable environment for such project courses is difficult. A development environment is needed that can connect to different distributed teams and an ongoing routine to conduct such courses needs to be established. This article sketches a picture of the software Factory, a platform that supports teaching distributed student projects and that has now been operational for more than three years. We describe the basic steps of conducting software Factory projects, and portray experiences from past factory projects. In addition, we provide a short overview of related approaches and future activities.

distributed Scrum adapts the Scrum project management framework for geographically distributed software teams. Experimentally evaluating the effectiveness of distributed Scrum is impractical, but many case studies and experience reports describe teams and projects that used distributed Scrum. This article synthesizes the results of these cases using case meta-analysis, a technique for quantitatively analyzing qualitative case reports. On balance, the evidence suggests that distributed Scrum has no impact, positive or negative, on overall project success. Consequently, claims by agile consultants who present distributed Scrum as a recipe for project success should be treated with great caution, while researchers should investigate more varied perspectives to identify the real drivers of success in distributed and global software development.

Is it worth adopting DevOps practices in Global software Engineering? Possible challenges and benefits

The software industry is adopting the DevOps paradigm to an increasingly frequent extent. In addition, the trend of developing software in a distributed manner greatly increased as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced team members from software companies to work remotely. We present the results of a Systematic Mapping Study (SMS) of how DevOps has been applied in distributed and global settings that adopts Global software development (GSD). The results were obtained from analysing 27 papers. The main conclusions obtained after carrying our SMS show that adopting DevOps in such settings by implementing certain practices brings several advantages to software companies, even though there are difficulties to be confronted when adopting DevOps in global and distributed contexts. Moreover, we (1) proposed definition of DevOps in distributed and global settings, (2) mapped the challenges detected with a list of well-known GSD risks and (3) mapped the benefits that can be obtained from applying certain practices identified and the challenges that should be overcame to obtain such benefits.
