Usability Evaluation of a distributed user interface Application for Visuomotor Organization Assessment

Background This article describes the development and evaluation of a distributed user interface (DUI) application to assess visuomotor organization ability. This application enables therapists to evaluate the acquired brain injury (ABI) on patients, and patients, to perform the assessment on a touch screen while therapists can observe the assessment process in real time on a separated monitor without interfering patients during the process as in traditional methodologies employing physical elements. Objectives The main goal of this research is the evaluation of the quality in use of DUIs in the Pegboard Construction assessment with patients with ABI from the therapist perspective in the area of occupational therapy. Methods To evaluate our system, we have performed a usability evaluation following the ISO/IEC 25010 and ISO/IEC 25062 standards to evaluate software usability and quality and it was conducted in collaboration with therapists and psychologists that have previously worked with people with ABI in diagnostic and assessment tasks. Results We show the results of the evaluation collected in a table that shows the completeness rate for each user for both, assisted (i.e., the percentage of tasks where participants performed with test director assistance) and unassisted tasks (i.e., the percentage of tasks where participants completed tasks autonomously), the total time participants required to complete proposed tasks, the number of mistakes participants performed during the session, and the number of assists they required to finish proposed tasks. In addition, we also evaluated the user satisfaction regarding our application using the system usability scale. Conclusion The use of information technologies in this field enables therapists to perform these evaluations in a simpler, efficient, and automated way. Nowadays, people who use multiple devices at the same time have been on the increase. This multi-device environment gives a good opportunity to expand the limited interaction as using Smartphone only. In this study, we present TakeOut, drawing application based on cross-device interaction of the smartphone and the smartwatch. TakeOut can be interacted on the smartphone and the smartwatch as each canvas and palette. It can extend the smartphone screen and enable drawing interaction using whole the smartphone screen. Through user study, we have identified very encouraging feedback and usability of the application.

DIREWOLF: A FRAMEWORK FOR WIDGET-BASED distributed user interfaceS

Web applications have overcome traditional desktop applications especially in collaborative settings. However, the bulk of Web applications still follow the "single user on a single device" computing model. Therefore, we created the Dire Wolf framework for rich Web applications with distributed user interfaces (DUIs) over a federation of heterogeneous commodity devices supporting modern Web browsers such as laptops, smart phones and tablet computers. The DUIs are based on widget technology coupled with cross-platform inter-widget communication (IWC) and seamless session mobility. Inter-widget communication technologies connect the widgets and enable real-time collaborative applications as well as runtime migration in our framework. We show that the Dire Wolf framework facilitates the use case of DUI-enabled semantic video annotation. For a single user it provides more flexible control over different parts of an application by enabling the simultaneous use of smart phones, tablets and computers. We conducted a technical evaluation and two user studies to validate the Dire Wolf approach. The work presented opens the way for creating distributed Web applications which can access device specific functionalities such as multi-touch, text input, etc. in a federated and usable manner. In this paper, we also sketch our ongoing work to integrate the WebRTC API into Dire Wolf, where we see opportunities for potential adoption of DUI Web applications by the majority of Web users.

The rapid growth of computing devices has led to the emergence of distributed user interfaces. A user interface is called distributed if a user can interact with it using several devices at the same time. Formal methods for designing such interfaces, in particular methods for the distribution of interface elements across multiple devices, are yet to be developed. This is the reason why every time a new application requires a distributed user interface, the latter has to be designed from scratch, rendering the entire venture economically inefficient. In order to minimize costs, unify and automate the development of distributed interfaces, we need to formulate general formal methods for designing distributed interfaces that will be independent from a particular application or device. This article paper proposes a formal distribution method based on the pi-calculus.

Recent research in Human-Computer Interaction for work has shown that conversational agents (CA) are beneficial for supporting focusedwork andwell-being while atwork. Knowledgeworkers struggle in maintaining focus, work schedule, and well-being. Typically, they rely on multiple tools and services for work productivity, scheduling tasks, and reminding breaks. With the goal of tackling these problems, we propose the concept of a ubiquitous work assistant (UWA), which consists of two components: a stationary CA (S-CA) and a wearable CA (W-CA). S-CA is meant to be placed on user's work desk whileW-CA is fixed on the user's wrist. The UWA interface is distributed between S-CA and W-CA. We initiated our study by conducting semi-structured interviews with knowledge workers (N = 14). We identified their expectations from conversational agents (CAs) that would assist them in their daily work life. From the interview findings, we developed an UWA prototype that could assist users by briefing their daily schedule, monitoring their schedule, and reminding breaks. We conducted a lab study simulating a home-office environment. The findings of the study show that the knowledge workers see potential in the UWA system. Further, we discuss implications of distributed user interface (DUI) for UWA design.

An increasing number of persuasive technology systems consist of multiple devices that enable efficient just-in-time interaction with the user. Developing multi-device systems to support a human activity bring about new challenges for interaction and user experience design. The main challenge identified in this paper is the successful designing of coherent user experience, which may improve user acceptance and have a positive effect on the overall persuasiveness of the system. This paper analyses a multi-device heart-rate monitoring environment to illustrate the target of our research. We propose the notion of distributed user experience as a key concept for studying the design of efficient persuasive technology systems consisting of multiple devices.

Despite the high level of interest in cross-device interaction, only few fully functional example applications exist. With XD-Bike, we built one of our own to not only showcase the use of our cross-device framework but also gather insights into the development process. XD-Bike is an application for mountain bikers that is built with web technologies and adapts to the set of devices at hand. The user interface is distributed across all available devices taking into account the space requirements of the UI elements, their importance, and the available space on devices. While using the cross-device framework eased the development process, we found the testing and debugging challenging due to the distributed nature of the application and the large set of possible device combinations.

Developing cross-device multi-user interfaces (UIs) is a challenging problem. There are numerous ways in which content and interactivity can be distributed. However, good solutions must consider multiple users, their roles, their preferences and access rights, as well as device capabilities. Manual and rule-based solutions are tedious to create and do not scale to larger problems nor do they adapt to dynamic changes, such as users leaving or joining an activity. In this paper, we cast the problem of UI distribution as an assignment problem and propose to solve it using combinatorial optimization. We present a mixed integer programming formulation which allows real-time applications in dynamically changing collaborative settings. It optimizes the allocation of UI elements based on device capabilities, user roles, preferences, and access rights. We present a proof-of-concept designer-in-the-loop tool, allowing for quick solution exploration. Finally, we compare our approach to traditional paper prototyping in a lab study.

Internet of Things (IoT) is a trending paradigm that more and more devices are connected nowadays. However, although the massive IoT devices have been the infrastructure everywhere, the utilization of these devices is still challenging, especially when interacting with multiple devices in a dynamic distributed IoT environment. In this paper, a novel interaction model named UnIEM is proposed to allow distributed user interfaces to be dynamically configured on several IoT devices based on user preferences. The proposed model is implemented on the operating system named HarmonyOS to utilize the native distributed processing support. A video migration demo application is developed to validate the proposed model. The eventual work can assist the developers to develop IoT applications with various different devices and interaction strategies with dynamic re-configurations in run-time.

The spread and usage of mobile devices, such as smartphones or tablets, increases continuously. While most of the applications developed for these devices can only be used on the device itself, mobile devices also offer a way to create a new kind of applications: multi-screen applications. These applications run distributedly on multiple screens, like a PC, tablet, smartphone or TV. The composition of all these screens creates a new user experience for single as well as for several users. While creating mashups is a common way for designing end user interfaces, they fail in supporting multiple screens. This paper presents a component-based approach for developing multi-screen mashups, named SmartComposition. The SmartComposition approach extends the OMELETTE reference architecture to deal with multiple screens. Furthermore, we enhance the OMDL for describing multi-screen mashups platform independently. We draw up several scenarios that illustrate the opportunities of multi-screen mashups. From these scenarios we derive requirements SmartComposition needs to comply with. A huge challenge we face is the synchronization between the screens. SmartComposition solves this through real-time communication via WebSockets or Peer-to-Peer communication. We present a first prototype and evaluate our approach by developing two different multi-screen mashups. Finally, next research steps are discussed and challenges for further research are defined.
