A new distributed coding scheme is proposed to achieve diversity in a network comprising multiple sources, multiple relays, and a single destination. This scheme is based on a distributed implementation of linear block codes, where each relay is assigned to a subset of the source nodes using the channel state information (CSI) of the source-relay (S-R) channels. The proposed scheme achieves diversity without using the CSI of the relay-destination (R-D) channels for relay assignment. On the other hand, in classical distributed coding schemes, it is usually assumed that each relay can fully decide if its received symbols are successfully decoded. This is achieved by using complicated coding schemes in S-R channels, which is also vulnerable to quasi-static fading. The proposed scheme achieves the intended diversity without using this extra coding/overhead. For the resulting relay assignment problem, we propose an algorithm based on the max-min criterion.

This article describes using distributed coding of logical information in multiagent systems. First we identify failures of the agent platform in case of an unreliable underlying network. Next a simple, but inefficient way of distributing the agent state is given. Finally, we expose the way of solving failure problems by use of state snapshots and distributed coding. We develop a model of the network, based on the notion of erasure graph channel. We treat the properties of the erasure code encoding data efficiently with respect to a prescribed level of distortion. This work introduces information-theoretic ideas to multiagent middleware. It should enable applications of multiagent systems in environments where it is hard to establish a reliable communication infrastructure. The exposed work is a part of project Combined, funded by DECIS Lab, Delft.

This paper addresses the problem of compact representation of a 3D scene, captured by distributed omnidirectional cameras. As the images from the sensors are likely to be correlated in most practical scenarios, we build a distributed algorithm based on coding with side information. A reference image is processed with a wavelet transform and progressively encoded. The Wyner-Ziv images undergo a multiresolution representation, and the generated bitplanes are channel encoded with LDPC codes. The central decoder eventually reconstructs the Wyner-Ziv images given by the syndrome bits from the channel codes using the reference omnidirectional image. It also iteratively implements motion estimation on the 2-sphere in order to improve the side information. Experimental results demonstrate that distributed coding improves the rate-distortion performance for coding a set of omnidirectional images when compared to independent coding solutions. The proposed method can further be extended to the decoding of multiple Wyner-Ziv images using one single reference omnidirectional image. Hence, it achieves a reduced overall coding rate compared to disparity-based schemes. In addition, it does not require explicit knowledge of the camera parameters nor precise calibration, which is certainly interesting in camera networks.

This paper examines both research and development challenges in the area of co-operative diversity for enhancing channel capacity in wireless communications networks. In particular, the role played by the distributed coding protocols in achieving diversity gains is investigated in connection with the co-operative communications model built via relay channels. A coding scheme suitable for the nodes working collaboratively in this environment is also presented.

Role of itinerancy among attractors as dynamical map in distributed coding scheme

A basic frame, based on which certain features of sensory stimuli can be extracted systematically in a distributed coding scheme, has not been clarified yet. This paper proposes that the basic frame can be a dynamical map represented by itinerancy among attractors. Features of entities are encoded by attractors of neural networks. Relations between the features in each modality are mapped on dynamical links between the attractors in each network relevant to each modality. The itinerant states, in which the network dynamic state itinerates chaotically or cyclically among the attractors, can work as dynamical maps. The recognition of features is carried out by a phase transition from an itinerant state to a constituent attractor. The phase transition is induced by a short-term synaptic change based on the Hebbian rule under application of a relevant stimulation. A theta-like global oscillation is necessary for self-organized formation of the chaotically itinerant state. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Quality enhancement of printed-and-scanned images using distributed coding

In this paper we address visual communications via print-and-scan channels from an information-theoretic point of view as communications with side information that targets quality enhancement of visual data at the output of this type of channels. The solution to this problem addresses important aspects of multimedia data processing and management. A practical approach to side information communications for printed documents based on Wyner-Ziv and Gray setups is analyzed in the paper that assumes two separated communications channels where an appropriate distributed coding should be elaborated. The printing channel is considered to be a direct visual channel for images ("analog" channel with degradations). The "digital channel" is considered to be an appropriate auxiliary channel exploited to communicate the information exploited for quality enhancement of printed-and-scanned image. We demonstrate both theoretically and practically how one can benefit from this sort of "distributed paper communications". (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A Data Compression Algorithm for Wireless Sensor Networks Based on an Optimal Order Estimation Model and distributed coding

In many wireless sensor network applications, the possibility of exceptions occurring is relatively small, so in a normal situation, data obtained at sequential time points by the same node are time correlated, while, spatial correlation may exist in data obtained at the same time by adjacent nodes. A great deal of node energy will be wasted if data which include time and space correlation is transmitted. Therefore, this paper proposes a data compression algorithm for wireless sensor networks based on optimal order estimation and distributed coding. Sinks can obtain correlation parameters based on optimal order estimation by exploring time and space redundancy included in data which is obtained by sensors. Then the sink restores all data based on time and space correlation parameters and only a little necessary data needs to be transmitted by nodes. Because of the decrease of redundancy, the average energy cost per node will be reduced and the life of the wireless sensor network will obviously be extended as a result.

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), where a multiplicity of sensors observe a physical phenomenon and transmit their measurements to one or more sinks, pertain to the class of multi-terminal source and channel coding problems of Information Theory. In this category, "real-time" coding is often encountered for WSNs, referring to the problem of finding the minimum distortion (according to a given measure), under transmission power constraints, attainable by encoding and decoding functions, with stringent limits on delay and complexity. On the other hand, the Decision Theory approach seeks to determine the optimal coding/decoding strategies or some of their structural properties. Since encoder(s) and decoder(s) possess different information, though sharing a common goal, the setting here is that of Team Decision Theory. A more pragmatic vision rooted in Signal Processing consists of fixing the form of the coding strategies (e.g., to linear functions) and, consequently, finding the corresponding optimal decoding strategies and the achievable distortion, generally by applying parametric optimization techniques. All approaches have a long history of past investigations and recent results. The goal of the present paper is to provide the taxonomy of the various formulations, a survey of the vast related literature, examples from the authors' own research, and some highlights on the inter-play of the different theories.

Prevalent predictive coding-based video compression methods rely on a heavy encoder to reduce temporal redundancy, which makes it challenging to deploy them on resource-constrained devices. Since the 1970s, distributed source coding theory has indicated that independent encoding and joint decoding with side information (SI) can achieve high-efficient compression of correlated sources. This has inspired a distributed coding architecture aiming at reducing the encoding complexity. However, traditional distributed coding methods suffer from a substantial performance gap to predictive coding ones. Inspired by the great success of learning-based compression, we propose the first end-to-end distributed deep video compression framework to improve the rate-distortion performance. A key ingredient is an effective SI generation module at the decoder, which helps to effectively exploit inter-frame correlations without computation-intensive encoder-side motion estimation and compensation. Experiments show that our method significantly outperforms conventional distributed video coding and H.264. Meanwhile, it enjoys 6 similar to 7x encoding speedup against DVC [1] with comparable compression performance. Code is released at https://***/Xinjie-Q/distributed-DVC.

This paper discusses robust coding of visual content for a distributed multimedia system. The system encodes independently two correlated video signals and reconstructs them jointly at a central decoder. The video signals are captured from a dynamic scene, where each signal is robustly coded by a motion-compensated Haar wavelet. The efficiency of the decoder is improved by a disparity analysis of the first image pair of the sequences, followed by disparity compensation of the remaining images of one sequence. We investigate how this scene analysis at the decoder can improve the coding efficiency. At the decoder, one video signal is used as side information to decode efficiently the second video signal. Additional bitrate savings can be obtained with disparity compensation at the decoder. Further, we address the theoretical problem of distributed coding of video signals in the presence of correlated video side information. We utilize a motion-compensated spatiotemporal transform to decorrelate each video signal. For certain assumptions, the optimal motion-compensated spatiotemporal transform for video coding with video side information at high rates is derived. It is shown that the motion-compensated Haar wavelet belongs to this class of transforms. Given the correlation of the video side information, the theoretical bitrate reduction for the distributed coding scheme is investigated. Interestingly, the efficiency of multiview side information is dependent on the level of temporal decorrelation: for a given correlation SNR of the side information, bitrate savings due to side information are decreasing with improved temporal decorrelation.
