Deterministic Annealing-Based Optimization for Zero-Delay Source-Channel coding in Networks

This paper studies the problem of global optimization of zero-delay source-channel codes that map between the source space and the channel space, under a given transmission power constraint and for the mean-square-error distortion. Particularly, we focus on two well-known network settings: the Wyner-Ziv setting where only a decoder has access to side information and the distributed setting where independent encoders transmit over independent channels to a central decoder. Prior work derived the necessary conditions for optimality of the encoder and decoder mappings, along with a greedy optimization algorithm that imposes these conditions iteratively, in conjunction with the heuristic noisy channel relaxation method to mitigate poor local minima. While noisy channel relaxation is arguably effective in simple settings, it fails to provide accurate global optimization in more complicated settings considered in this paper. We propose a powerful nonconvex optimization method based on the concept of deterministic annealing-which is derived from information theoretic principles and was successfully employed in several problems including vector quantization, classification, and regression. We present comparative numerical results that show strict superiority of the proposed method over greedy optimization methods as well as prior approaches in literature.

A method of distributed coding of digital images was proposed in imitation of the holographic principle of image recording. It allows one to regenerate images with appreciable losses of their surface. Consideration was given to the variants of distributed coding and decoding of images. A method of interpolation-based regeneration of defective images was described.

Neural-network models of learning and memory: leading questions and an emerging framework

Real-time neural-network models provide a conceptual framework for formulating questions about the nature of cognition, an architectural framework far mapping cognitive Functions to brain regions, a semantic framework far defining terms, and a computational framework for testing hypotheses. This article considers key questions about how a physical system might simultaneously support one-trial teaming and lifetime memories, in the context of neural models that test possible solutions to the problems posed. Model properties point to partial answers, and model limitations lead to new questions. Placing individual system components in the context of a unified real-time network allows analysis to move from the revel of neural processes, including teaming laws and rules of synaptic transmission, to cognitive processes, including attention and consciousness.

We propose a new method for low-complexity compression of multispectral images. We develop on a novel approach to coding signals with side information based on recent advances in compressed sensing and universal scalar quantization. Our approach can be interpreted as a variation of quantized compressed sensing, where the most significant bits are discarded at the encoder and recovered at the decoder from the side information. The image is reconstructed using weighted total variation minimization, incorporating side information in the weights while enforcing consistency with the recovered quantized coefficient values. Our experiments validate our approach and confirm the improvements in rate-distortion performance.

In this paper, we design the full-rate full-diversity quasi-orthogonal space time block code (QOSTBC) matrix for decode-and-forward (DAF) relay networks with four independent single-antenna source nodes, a single-antenna destination node and a single receive four-transmit-antenna relay node. In this scheme, we consider the channel states between the four users to select the elements of the DQOSTBC matrix to be decode and forward (DAF) or amplify and forward (AAF) types. Thus the proposed scheme is a DQOSTBC matrix with embedded adaptive DAF/AAF elements, based on the source-to-source channel coefficient is above or below a threshold. By the simulation results, the proposed DQOSTBC with adaptive DAF/AAF matrix elements is approximately 7dB better than the traditional DQOSTBC (all matrix elements are fixed to DAF type, by Li et. al.) at 10(-4) bit error rate (BER) because the traditional DQOSTBC loses full diversity due to information exchange errors. There are several problems in video coding that can not be adequately addressed through the use of conventional source coding techniques. For instance, any video coding system that is based on a predictive framework will suffer from performance degradations if there is uncertainty in the predictions. In this paper, we propose a method that incorporates binning codes and channel decoding to address video coding problems that have multiple possible predictions at the decoder. We will propose solutions based on binning codes to three separate problems in video coding and show that the results are superior to pre-existing methods.

In this paper we investigate the effect of power allocation on the performance of the distributed Turbo Product Code (DTPC) system. We study the error propagation on distributed coding systems when the relay makes erroneous decisions and present a simple power allocation method to alleviate the effect of relay decoding errors on the iterative decoding at the destination. We validate this method with results of an exhaustive search and compare its performance with the fixed power assignments for DTPC system with Decode and Forward (DF) and Soft Decode and Forward (SDF) relaying protocols. Compared to the fixed power assignment, the proposed method for power allocation shows a performance gain of 1.2dB at 10(-4) Bit Error Rate (BER).

The CEO problem of estimating a single binary data source using multiple observations is considered. A closed form equation for maximum achievable information capacity of the system is derived for different system parameters including number of sensors, observation accuracy and channel quality. A new criterion for sensor clustering is provided based on the minimum number of sensors required to achieve arbitrarily low estimation error using different coding rates. A distributed joint source-channel coding (D-JSCC) scheme is proposed as an implementation example. The proposed coding scheme is based on the parallel concatenated convolutional codes (PCCC) that achieves high BER performance utilizing the number of sensors determined by the derived criterion(1).

For large-scale sensor networks deployed for data gathering, energy efficiency is critical. Eliminating the data correlation is a promising technique for energy efficiency. Compressive Data Gathering (CDG) [8], which employs distributed coding to compress data correlation, is an important approach in this area. However, the CDG scheme uses a uniform pattern in data transmission, where all nodes transmit the same amount of data regardless of their hop distances to the sink, making it inefficient in saving transmission costs in 2-D networks. In this paper, the Major Coefficient Recovery (MCR) scheme is proposed, where the Discrete Cosine Transformation (DCT) is applied in a distributed fashion to the original sensed data. A non-uniform data transmission pattern is proposed by exploiting the energy concentration property of DCT and QR decomposition techniques so that sensors with larger hop-count can transmit fewer messages for network energy efficiency. The sink node recovers only the major coefficients of the DCT to reconstruct the original data accurately. MCR reduces the transmission overhead to O(kn - k(2)), an improvement by O(log n) over CDG in both 1-D and 2-D cases. The recovery performance of MCR is verified by extensive simulations.
