IMPEDANCE TRANSFORMATION AND MATCHING FOR LUMPED COMPLEX LOAD WITH NONUNIFORM TRANSMISSION-LINE

New nonuniform transmission-linematching networks for a class of lumped complex loads are presented. A parabolic (or reciprocal parabolic) tapered transmission line, whose exact equivalent circuit is represented by a mixed lumped and distributed circuit, can transform the lumped series RC (or parallel RL) loads into different lumped impedances which are more convenient than the original load impedances for ordinary matching network design. Simple design procedures are described and useful design charts are given. Also, numerical examples are shown including experimental verification.

TRANSVERSE MODAL-ANALYSIS OF PRINTED-CIRCUIT TRANSMISSION-LINES

Dispersion characteristics of finned rectangular waveguides, finlines, shielded slotlines, shielded microstrip and striplines, and shielded two-coupled slotlines and striplines are formulated by the transverse modal analysis method. A rectangular cavity is formed by placing two electric walls transverse to a uniform transmission-line system. Considering that the wave propagation is in the direction transverse to the transmission line and to the dielectric discontinuities, the rectangular cavity can be viewed as multiple rectangular waveguide sections joined by the discontinuities. The rectangular waveguide modal analysis technique is readily applicable to obtain the dispersion characteristics by matching the boundary conditions at the discontinuities interface. Numerical solutions are obtained using Galerkin's method, and the results are compared with several numerical techniques for various transmission-line systems.

In the past, BC Hydro used circuit breaker closing resistors to limit switching surges on its 500 kV transmission system. This approach was considered undesirable for new transmission lines and an innovative scheme incorporating special transmission line surge arresters and controlled high speed autoreclosing of the circuit breaker was developed. The scheme and its basis as applied on a new 330 km long 500 kV transmission line are described. Actual line switching tests, also described, confirmed the validity of the studies performed and applied design concepts, and the value of the scheme.

ON ORTHOGONAL TRANSFORMATIONS

The introduction of an orthogonal transformation pair is generally begun with the definition, followed by the proofs of the orthogonality and the associated Parseval's relation shown as one of the properties of the transform pair. This procedure has to be repeated for various transform relations. In this article, we present the generalized structure of the orthogonal transformation relation by using the vector space model. This method enables us to visualize the similarities as well as the differences among the orthogonal transformations used in signal processing. In addition to the examples, transform pairs including Fourier transform, Fourier series, discrete-time Fourier transform (DFI), Hankel transform, Hilbert transform, the sampling theorem, Legendre, Laguerre, Hermite, and Chebychev decomposition methods are tabulated and shown as special cases of the generalized model. This approach can be used for potential extension or modification of the existing orthogonal transformations. It can be also applied to the design of special-purpose orthogonal mapping techniques.

A COST-EFFECTIVE PI NETWORK FILTER FOR ELIMINATION OF STIFF TRANSMISSION CROSSTALK IN ZERO SEQUENCE PROPOGATED DISTRIBUTION POWER-LINE CARRIER SIGNALS

A cost effective method for elimination of intersubstation crosstalk problem in distribution power line carrier communications systems is presented. A shunt three-phase wye-configured capacitor bank is connected between a substation transformer and any source of zero-sequence power line carrier commu nication signals being transmitted on the substation distribution network to partially alleviate unbalance conditions in the communication signals. When balan ced, these signals are not passed by a three-phase delta-wye grounded substation transformer to the main transmission line. The signal is further attenuated by connecting the common wye-point of the capacitor bank through an inductance to neutral. This forms a shunt element of either an L or pi attentuation circuit with the series inductance of the substation transformer and the transmission line inductance. The transformer series inductance and the transmission line form the serial elements of the L or pi circuit. A further shunt element at another substation distribution network completes the attenuation circuit for the pi configuration. The method was verified in an actual field application. The cost of this method is shown to be only one-fifth that of the conventional approach.

CHARACTERIZATION AND MODELING OF MULTIPLE LINE INTERCONNECTIONS FROM TIME-DOMAIN MEASUREMENTS

Methods have been developed to extract electrical circuit models from time domain measurements of lossless, nonuniform, multiconductor transmission lines for two broad classes of structures. Although unique solutions are not feasible for general structures that scatter the propagating wave-front, approximate solutions have been identified. For the first class of structures a single velocity wave-front is assumed, equivalent to the homogeneous media case. The second class is for structures with identical lines, such as a parallel line bus structure, where separable modal wave-fronts propagate. For these cases the propagation behavior (eigenvector matrix) is determined only by the known number of lines, N, allowing decoupling of the system into N orthogonal modal transmission lines. Circuit models have been developed for these decoupled nonuniform lines, as well as for the equal modal velocity assumption which relies on a matrix impedance profile to fully describe the system.

A 200-225-GHz Manifold-Coupled Multiplexer Utilizing Metal Waveguides

This article presents a 220-GHz four-channel, noncontiguous, and manifold-coupled waveguide multiplexer for future terahertz (THz) multichannel communication application. The multiplexer is composed of four Chebyshev bandpass filters based on metal waveguide technology. Through a unique design in which the tuning dimensional variables are reduced to 14 and a co-design of low-order electromagnetic (EM) distributed models and full-wave EM models, the design optimization is achieved with a good computational efficiency and design accuracy. The proposed multiplexer is fabricated by high-precision computer numerical control (CNC) milling technology, in which the fabrication errors are evaluated to be within +/- 3 mu\mu. The measured results exhibit 1.7 dB of in-band insertion loss and better than 15 dB of average common-port return loss for each of the channel filter. The measured results are all in good agreement with the simulated ones, thereby validating the complete design procedure.

ANALYSIS OF AN ACCELERATED TRIP SCHEME FOR FAULTS IN THE 2ND ZONE OF PROTECTION OF A TRANSMISSION-LINE

An analysis of a scheme of accelerated trips for faults in the second zone of a transmission line distance protection system is given. By the use of the two-port network theory, variations of the sequence currents and voltages are analyzed when the fault occurs on the protected line followed by a trip of the circuit breaker on the other side. The analysis is supported by tests performed on a laboratory model of a power system. The new scheme can improve sensitivity and avoid improper operation. Thus, it may be possible to use this scheme instead of pilot protection and alleviate any problems caused by the nonavailability of a sufficient number of communication channels for remote control and relaying.< >

Controlling Nonreciprocity Using Enhanced Brillouin Scattering

The properties of space-time modulated media operating in the subsonic regime are discussed based on rigorous Bloch-Floquet theory. A geometrical description in the frequency-wavenumber plane is developed to provide insight into the possible interactions and their nature. It is shown that the secular equation has a singularity, which results in a weak/passive second harmonic generation process. In addition, bandgaps arising from the strong/active parametric interaction between an incident wave and its space-time harmonic result in an inelastic Brillouinlike scattering process. Hence, when the incident frequency is inside a forward (backward) bandgap, a Stokes' (anti-Stokes') scattered wave bounces back to the source. Although the forward and backward bandgaps do not generally occur at the same frequency bands, the insertion loss and gap width are equal. Requirement that both gaps do not overlap enforces a lower bound on the modulation speed. It is shown that although an increase in the modulation index is desirable, as it enhances the nonreciprocal behavior, it also limits the range of possible modulation speeds. It is shown that an alternative way to enhance the nonreciprocity, whenever the modulation index is constrained, is through the reduction of the modulation wavelength. The effective complex refractive index is calculated over a wide frequency range. It is shown that peaks appear in the extinction coefficient, indicating scattering to Stokes' and anti-Stokes' waves. Finally, a comprehensive numerical analysis based on the finite-difference time-domain method is developed to verify and demonstrate the intriguing properties of space-time modulated media.

Power leakage, characteristic impedance, and leakage-transition behavior of finite-length stub sections of leaky printed transmission lines

Power leakage and leakage transition phenomena in finite-length stub sections are studied for slot- as well as strip-type leaky transmission lines, A three dimensional (3-D) method of moments is used for the rigorous analysis of the stub sections, The results reveal several important characteristics of power leakage in printed circuits that are not obtainable from the two-dimensional (2-D) analyses of ideal infinite-length lines. A new definition of the characteristic impedance for a leaky printed transmission line is proposed, which is shown to correctly model the impedance behavior of the finite-length sections, It is noted that the standard definitions of characteristic impedance, commonly used for nonleaky transmission lines, may not apply to practical circuits when leakage exists. Further, the leakage transition behavior in the finite-length sections, operated around a ''mode-transition'' region, is explained from the 3-D analysis results, Leakage analyses of ideal infinite-length lines can not model such transition excitation in finite-length circuits.
