This article considers the learning consensus problem of distributed parameter type multi-agent differential inclusion systems including parabolic type and hyperbolic type. By imposing a Lipschitz condition on a set-valued mapping and utilizing distributed P$$ P $$-type iterative learning consensus control protocols, an iterative learning process is established. Further, sufficient conditions for the convergence of the consensus error between any two agents in the sense of the certain norm are obtained with the help of Steiner-type selectors. Finally, numerical simulations verify the validity of the proposed method.

This paper investigates consensus control problem for a class of distributed parameter type multi-agent differential inclusion systems with state time-delay by utilizing iterative learning control (ILC). Unlike most ILC literature of nonlinear distributed parameter systems that require an identical virtual leader, the virtual leader is iteratively varying in this work and can be described by any follower agent. Both P-type closed-loop and D-type open-loop ILC are proposed for the distributed parameter type multi-agent differential inclusion systems, which enable the output trajectories of each agent to achieve consensus in the sense of W-1,W-2 norm as the iteration number increases. Meanwhile, consensus control theorems for these protocols are established by using Steiner-type selector, Green's formulas and some technical inequalities. Finally, numerical simulations testify the validity of the proposed methods.

Structural control of distributed parameter systems by output feedback

Most of the controller design in distributed parameter systems requires not only the measurement and/or estimation of distributed states, but also the feedback gain in a function of time and spatial coordinates. These requirements are difficult, if nor impossible, to meet in engineering implementation An output feedback algorithm for the structural control of distributed parameter systems is presented in this paper. The algorithm employs a solution technique to simplify the functional Riccati equation into a set of algebraic equations such that sensor nod actuator can be applied at discrete, instead of distributed, locations in the structure systems. The control law does nor require any model discretization thereby preventing the spillover associated,vith discrete parameter models. An example of a slewing beam system distributed parameter model is employed to demonstrate that the bending vibration can be effectively suppressed by a control input at the hub together with a minimal set of output measurements. The performance of the controller is shown superior to that of discrete systems using modal truncation techniques.

A distributed parameter model of cerebral blood-tissue exchange with account of capillary transit time distribution

Quantitative estimates of physiological parameters associated with cerebral blood flow can be derived from the analysis of dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) images, using an appropriate model of the underlying tissue impulse residue function. The theoretical formulation of a distributed parameter model of tissue microcirculation, which accounts for the effects of capillary permeability and transit time distribution, is presented here. This model considers a statistical distribution of capillary-tissue units, each described by a distributed parameter model that accounts for convective transport within the capillary and transcapillary axial diffusion. Monte Carlo simulations were performed to stud), the confidence of the parameter estimates, and the model was used to analyze DCE CT images of patient study cases with metastatic cerebral tumors. The tumors were found to yield significantly higher estimates than normal tissues for the parameters associated with the extravasation of tracer and for the standard deviation of capillary transit times. The proposed model can be used with DCE imaging to study the microcirculatory characteristics of cerebral tumors. (c) 2005 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Predictions for a distributed parameter model describing the hepatic processing of 2,3,7,8-TCDD

A distributed parameter model describing spatially-dependent hepatic processing of the chemical compound 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD or dioxin) has previously been reported [1]. The mathematical system consists of coupled nonlinear partial and ordinary differential equations with delays. In this paper, we investigate the qualitative behavior of the system over a six-hour time period following a subcutaneous injection. A brief summary of the model is also given. Nonlinear valve train dynamics simulation with a distributed parameter model of valve springs

A simulation model of valve train dynamics was developed in order to investigate the vibrational behavior of a valve train under heavy normal load, especially for heavy-duty diesel engines. The nonlinear multi-degree-of-freedom model developed for this study uses input data resulting from the kinematic analysis. The valve spring was modeled as a distributed parameter system rather than a lumped mass system. The stiffness constants of each valve train component were theoretically obtained as nonlinear values. The partial differential equation describing the motion of the spring and the ordinary differential equations for other components, which were considered as a lumped mass system, were solved simultaneously without any iterations by using the numerical ''Time Marching Step'' method. The results of this simulation, which treated the elastic characteristics of each component as nonlinear, were more accurate than the previous studies that used simple linear elastic models.

An analytical method of solution for the high-speed dynamic response of a lumped/distributed parameter model for cam-follower systems is developed. The model combines the distributed parameter model of the return spring with a viscously damped, single degree-of-freedom, lumped model of the elastic follower train. The cam event is considered as a periodic motion, of period 360 deg, and is represented by its Fourier series approximation. Linear systems approach utilizing four-pole parameter representation of lumped and distributed elements is adopted. The applicability and the accuracy of the method are verified with the aid of the experimental results reported in recent literature on the dynamic response of a high-speed cam-follower system.

Multivariable transfer functions for a slewing piezoelectric laminate beam

In this paper a distributed parameter model of a slewing beam system with piezoelectric actuators and sensors is considered. The system has a torque motor at a pinned (proximal) end, an endpoint motion sensor at the distal end, and patches of thin piezoelectric laminates attached to its surface. The partial differential equation of motion for this system is transformed to Laplace domain transfer functions after application of the appropriate boundary conditions. Transfer functions relating the various actuator/sensor pairs are developed. The results are shown to reduce to previously known results which are special cases of the system under consideration. Examples and experimental results are presented using a beam experiment at the US Air Force, Frank J. Seiler Research Laboratory.

Dynamic modeling, simulation, and MIMO predictive control of a tubular solid oxide fuel cell

Solid oxide fuel cells are a promising option for distributed energy stationary power generation that offers efficiencies up to 50% in stand-alone applications, 70% in hybrid gas turbine applications and 80% in cogeneration. To advance SOFC technology sufficiently for widespread market penetration, the SOFC must demonstrate improved cell lifetime from the status quo. Much research has been performed to improve SOFC lifetime using advanced geometries and materials, and in this research, we suggest further improving lifetime by designing an advanced control algorithm based upon preexisting mechanical stress analysis [1]. Control algorithms commonly address SOFC lifetime related operability objectives using unconstrained, SISO control algorithms that seek to minimize thermal transients. While thermal fatigue may be one thermal stress driver, these studies often do not consider maximum radial thermal gradients or critical absolute temperatures in the SOFC. In addition, researchers often discuss hot-spots as a critical lifetime reliability issue, but as previous stress work demonstrates, the minimum cell temperature is the primary thermal stress driver in tubular SOFCs modeled after the Siemens Power Generation, Inc. design. In this work, we present a dynamic, quasi-two-dimensional model for a high-temperature tubular SOFC combined with ejector and prereformer models. The model captures dynamics of critical thermal stress drivers and is used as the physical plant for closed-loop simulations with a constrained, MIMO model predictive control algorithm. Closed-loop simulation results demonstrate effective load-following, operability constraint satisfaction, and disturbance rejection. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In drilling operations, the interaction of the drillstring with the borehole leads to vibrations affecting the performance and increasing the drilling cost. The development of controllers to get a faster and efficient drilling operation is based on a mathematical modeling allowing a proper system characterization and the identification of the vibration sources to avoid them or mitigate their influence.
