Quasi Serializable Concurrency Control in distributed real-time database systems

This paper formally defines and analyses the new notion of correctness called quasi serializability, and then outlines corresponding concurrency control protocol QDHP for distributed real-time databases. Finally, through a series of simulation studies, it shows that using the new concurrency control protocol the performance of distributed real-time databases can be much improved.

The simulation of a distributed real-time database system is a complicated and compute/time intensive task. Most existing work in this area has focused on developing simulators for the purpose of testing a specific set of protocols under a rigid set of requirements. We have developed a distributed real-time transaction processing simulator (DRTTPS) that provides a full featured interactive simulation environment capable of simulating a wide range of protocols within an environment that closely mimics the real-world. DRTTPS provides a modular, flexible, and extensible approach to protocol development and testing in a complex distributed database environment. The simulator is capable of taking advantage of multiple processors and runs simulations in parallel for a quicker turnaround time.

In a real-time database system, an application supports a mix of transactions. These include the real-time transactions that require completion by a given deadline. time-critical requirements also exist in many distributed multi-media system applications. Existing concurrency control procedures introduce excessive delays due to non-availability of data resources. In this study, we ignore the delays incurred by ordinary transactions, in order to achieve a non-interference mode of execution (near parallel) for the time-critical transactions. For this purpose, a data allocation model has been studied. It is a stochastic process model based on the use of two-phase locking. It highlights the available possibilities for reductions of delays for time-critical transactions within a distributed real-time database systems. Based on the new conceptual model, modified synchronization techniques for time-critical transactions have been proposed.

On using real-time static locking protocols for distributed real-time databases

The use of Static Two Phase Locking Protocols (S2PL) for concurrency control in real-time database systems (RTDBS) has received little attention in the past. Actually, real-time S2PL (RT-S2PL) protocols do possess some desirable features making them suitable for RTDBS, especially for distributed real-time database systems (DRTDBS) in which remote locking is required and distributed deadlock is possible. In this paper, different RT-S2PL protocols are proposed. They differ in their methods of reducing the blocking time of higher priority transactions. Their performance is studied and compared with a real-time dynamic two phase locking protocol (RT-D2PL), called Hybrid Two Phase Locking (Hb2PL). The impact of different system and workload parameters, such as mean inter-arrival time of transactions, number of remote lock requests of a transaction, communication overhead for sending messages, and database size on their performance have been examined. The performance results indicate that the RT-S2PL protocols are suitable for DRTDBS in which the proportion of local locks of a transaction is small and the communication overhead for locking is high.

Impact of high speed network on performance of real-time concurrency control protocol

The impact of network layer assumptions on the performance of the concurrency control protocol in distributed real-time database systems is studied by modeling the network layer as ATM networks instead of conventional simple constant delay centers. The results show that the unpredictable behaviour of the underlying network will give non-constant network transit time which in turn can cause significant adverse impact on the performance of the protocol. In this study, a dynamic deadline assignment scheme is proposed to reduce the impact of the underlying network and to improve the system performance.

High priority two phase locking (HP2PL) concurrency control algorithm can be used for accessing of data items to resolve conflicts amongst the concurrently executing transactions. Inclusion of priority inversion and data inaccessibility are the most undesirable problems in transactions' execution which seriously affect the system performance. Previously developed protocols for resolving such issues put a lot of messages and time overhead which is not desirable. In distributed real-time database system (DRTDBS), basic aim is to minimize the number of transactions missing their deadline. This can be achieved by minimizing commit time. In this paper, A One Phase Priority Inheritance Commit Protocol (OPPIC) has been proposed specifically reducing one round of message transfer among coordinator and participating cohorts' sites in case of priority inversion problem at any of the cohort of low priority transaction. Focus of this protocol is to minimize the priority inversion duration that in turn minimizes commit time. A distributed database system is simulated for measuring the performance of this protocol with 2PC and PIC protocols. The results confirm the significant improvement in system performance with the OPPIC protocol.
