Real-time multimedia multicast over wireless networks is an exciting application that has generated a lot of interest recently. Its main challenge lies in the stringent bandwidth and time-delay requirements of real-time multimedia and severe impairments of the wireless channels. We develop a network-aware cross-layer design for multimedia multicast over heterogeneous wireless-wireline networks, that leverages the knowledge on network information theory, multimedia processing, error control, and networking. In particular, the encoded multimedia data are broadcast to multiple Internet servers over a wireless radio link. Each server merely compresses the signal it has received using distributed source coding by exploiting mutual correlation among signals received at different servers. The receiver collects bitstreams from the servers before performing joint decoding. We provide an algorithm for optimal nonuniform scalar quantizer design at the server side that minimizes the required rate under the decoder bit error rate constraint. For scalable multimedia codes, we develop a joint source-channel coding scheme which combines error-protection at the base station and distributed source coding at the servers. Our experimental results show significant performance improvements over conventional solutions due to spatial diversity and distributed source coding gains.

In recent years, sensor research has been undergoing a quiet revolution, promising to have a significant impact throughout society that could quite possibly dwarf previous milestones in the information revolution. Realizing the great promise of sensor networks requires more than a mere advance in individual technologies. It relies on many components working together in an efficient, unattended, comprehensible, and trustworthy manner. One of the enabling technologies in sensor networks is the distributed source coding (DSC), which refers to the compression of the multiple correlated sensor outputs that does not communicate with each other. DSC allows a many-to-one video coding paradigm that effectively swaps encoder-decoder complexity with respect to conventional video coding, thereby representing a fundamental concept shift in video processing. This article has presented an intensive discussion on two DSC techniques, namely Slepian-Wolf coding and Wyner-Ziv coding. The Slepian and Wolf coding have theoretically shown that separate encoding is as efficient as joint coding for lossless compression in channel coding.

In this paper, we propose a scheme for distributed source coding of correlated sources using a single systematic LDPC code. In particular, since we are interested in wireless sensor network applications, we consider LDPC codes with short to moderate lengths that achieve every arbitrary coding rate on the Slepian-Wolf rate region. We simplify the distributed source coding problem to the rate-compatible LDPC code design with an unequal error protection property. The decoders communicate to each other to exchange information bits prior to decoding. However, thereafter, each performs the decoding independently. Therefore, errors in one decoder do not affect the other one. The simulation results confirm that the gap from the theoretical limit remains almost the same for different rates on the Slepian-Wolf rate region. First, we consider two correlated sources. We show that our proposed scheme improves the performance of distributed source coding of two sources considerably. This benefit is more stressed for application with short to moderate length sequences. Then, we study distributed source coding of three sources. As a special case, we investigate three sources that are pairwise correlated with the same correlation probability. We show that the gap from the theoretical limit is smaller than that of previous work. We also investigate the distributed source coding of correlated sources when there is no prior knowledge of the correlation parameter at the time of code design. We note that although the proposed distributed source coding is well suited for sensor networks (where sequences with less than 10000 bits are used), the method can be generalized to other distributed source coding applications.

To reduce the possibility of poor efficiency and weak anti-error capability while encoding and transmitting hyperspectral images, we present a distributed source coding scheme for hyperspectral images based on three-dimensional (3D) set partitioning in hierarchical trees (SPIHT). First, the 3D wavelet transform is performed on the hyperspectral image. Thereafter, the low frequency section is regarded as the Key frame and the high frequency section as the Wyner-Ziv frame to enable independent SPIHT coding through different transmission channels. The Wyner-Ziv encoder uses Turbo channel coding to create high frequency information that reflects the details of the image with better anti-error capacity, while the low frequency information shows the main energy of the image. In this study, we used SPIHT coding to acquire a bit stream with quality scalability. Results show that the proposed scheme is more efficient during coding, while at the same time providing improved anti-error capability and quality scalability of the bit stream.

This paper considers the design of optimal joint compression-routing schemes for networks with correlated sources and multiple sinks. Such a setting is typically encountered in sensor networks. It is sometimes tempting to assume that an optimal distributed compression scheme followed by standard routing (as designed for independent sources) would be nearly optimal. We instead propose a joint design approach that integrates distributed source coding with a mechanism called dispersive information routing. Unlike network coding, dispersive information routing can be realized using conventional routers without recourse to recoding at intermediate nodes. We also point out the direct connections between dispersive information routing and a related problem in sensor network databases, namely, fusion coding for selective retrieval. We propose an efficient practical design strategy, variants of which are adopted for each of the two problems. Simulation results provide evidence for substantial gains over conventional schemes.

distributed source coding (DSC) is typically used to compress information from multiple correlated sources that do not communicate with each other. In this paper, DSC principles are used to secure biometric data in a multimodal hand-based recognition system, introducing a novel approach for Log-Likelihood Ratio initialization and a new binarization technique. The proposed biometric recognition system relies on a new architecture using three hand-based biometric traits: palmprint, finger surface and hand geometry, being the latter used as a soft biometric to accelerate the identification process. Promising results are achieved in terms of recognition accuracy, speed and security when performing identification on large databases, like the UST Hand Image Database.

Media authentication is important in content delivery via untrusted intermediaries, such as peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing. Many differently encoded versions of a media file might exist. Our previous work applied distributed source coding not only to distinguish the legitimate diversity of encoded images from tampering but also to localize tampered regions in an image already deemed to be inauthentic. In both cases, authentication requires a Slepian-Wolf encoded image projection that is supplied to the decoder. We extend our scheme to authenticate images that have undergone contrast, brightness, and affine warping adjustment. Our approach incorporates an Expectation Maximization algorithm into the Slepian-Wolf decoder. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can distinguish legitimate encodings, of authentic images from illegitimately modified versions. despite arbitrary contrast, brightness, and affine warping adjustment, using authentication data of less than 250 bytes per image.

Considering nodes energy and channel bandwidth limitations in a multiview images network, avoiding inter-node communication in the coding scheme is necessary and makes the communication efficient, in comparison with conventional coding methods with internode communication. In our system, we consider a multiview images network as an array of nodes on a line with the same distance to each other. Each node in this system includes a camera to capture with a limited processing and communication abilities. We propose a multiview images coding without requiring inter-node communication, to gain the advantage of correlation at decoder side for two network configurations, but the main concept of the proposed coding for both network configurations is the same. The two network configurations are distinguished based on presence of parent node in each cluster, which sends full information to central node (i.e. joint decoder). The other nodes called children nodes and send their partial information to central node. In this paper, a coding scheme is proposed for multiview images network with parent node based on the number of parent nodes (i.e. "one parent node cluster" and "two parent node cluster") in each cluster. Not that, because we are involved with multiview images, the decoding procedure is searching for correspondence between partially sent multiview images data. In coding scheme with parent node, if each parent node fails the decoding task of children nodes will be failed or the error caused by corresponding search during the decoding of children nodes is increased if network uses other parent nodes to decode the cluster without parent node. To make the network robust in case of node failure, we avoid parent nodes, and developed a network configuration where all nodes are children nodes (i.e. "without parent node cluster"). For such a network, we also propose a coding algorithm for multiview images that the joint decoder at central node is able to decode the partial info

In this paper, we propose a scheme for distributed source coding that achieves any arbitrary rate on the Slepian-Wolf rate region using a single systematic LDPC code. This method is based on sending a fraction of the information bits along with a fraction of parity bits generated by the LDPC code. First, we study the problem of distributed source coding of two correlated sources at the symmetric rate. We propose to use non-uniform LDPC codes for this application. Then, we generalize our approach to any arbitrary rate on the Slepian-Wolf rate region. The detailed construction of this scheme is investigated. We illustrate that the design procedure for the LDPC code simplifies to the design of rate-adaptive LDPC codes that need unequal error protection. It is shown that the performance of distributed source coding at any arbitrary rate is almost the same as that of asymmetric rates. Because of the proposed decoding algorithm, each of the sources is decoded independently (only part of the information bits are being exchanged between the decoders). Therefore, this approach does not suffer from the problems of heavily damaged or propagation of the errors. This method can be easily applied to joint source-channel coding.

We study the performance of distributed source coding in large wireless sensor networks obtained with enhanced correlation estimators. distributed source coding is especially useful when data correlation exists since it tries to remove the redundancy in the information;and dense sensor networks are rich in correlations. Existing results from information theory show that this compression can be executed in a distributed fashion and without any performance loss in comparison with the centralized approach. However, there is still performance gap between the theoretical bounds and the results achieved with practical implementations. In order to mitigate this, we propose the use of enhanced correlation estimators. Simulation results show a performance improvement in the energy consumption by reducing the number of transmitted bits compared to classical methods.
