In this paper, the design and construction methods of the DISCUS (distributed source coding Using Syndromes) scheme in wireless sensor networks are analyzed. The encoder quantizes the continuous outputs of the source and calculates the syndromes of the source codewords. Only the syndromes are transmitted to the decoder. The decoder combines the received syndromes and the side information to reconstruct the original source information. Some modifications are adopted to refine the shortages of the original DISCUS scheme, called extended DISCUS (eDISCUS). Firstly, the decoding error on the most significant bit is corrected. Secondly, the simple mapping from decimal quantization levels to binary codebook is replaced by a Gray-like Code. Thirdly, additional syndromes are transmitted to correctly decode all the single codeword error. Simulation results show that the modifications have better decoding error rate and distortion performances.

In this paper, we analyze the rate-distortion (R-D) performance of distributed source coding (DSC) quantization. In W-Z problem, quantization must consider source, channel, side information. In variable cases, source and output of quantization and side information forming different Markov chain, we propose rate distortion functions for clean and noisy sources using these chains. Based on these functions, we analyze some system parameters related to R-D performance for Gaussian source. The results show that side information have obviously effect.

Some emerging applications may require flexible playback features for time-based media, such as video, that cannot be directly supported by current compression standards, because for these decoding of frames can only be done in a predetermined order. An example would be a video application where both backward and forward frame-by-frame playback are to be supported. A standard codec could support this by decoding complete GOPs in the desired order, and then playing back one frame at a time. Thus, potentially significant added delay and memory are needed to support backward playback, which can be lowered if small GOP sizes are chosen, at the cost of reduced coding efficiency. Other example applications where flexible playback may be desirable include switching between different views in multiview video coding, and accessing individual spectral bands in hyperspectral imagery. In this work we address flexible playback by showing that it becomes feasible when a particular data unit (e.g., a video frame) can be decoded using information from either one of a number of other data units (e. in the video case the next frame or the previous frame). Note that this is different from structures such as bi-directionally predicted frames, which require both predictor frames to be available at the decoder. We cast this problem as one of source coding with uncertainty about decoder side-information and propose a solution based on distributed source coding. In addition, we propose macroblock-based mode switching algorithms in the context of distributed video coding to improve coding efficiency. Our results show that, using forward/backward playback as an example, our proposed solution can achieve good coding efficiency without incurring additional delay and memory overhead.

This paper considers the problem of minimizing the communication cost for a general multi-hop network with correlated sources and multiple sinks. For the single sink scenario, it has been shown that this problem can be decoupled, without loss of optimality, into two separate subproblems of distributed source coding and finding the optimal routing (transmission structure). It has further been established that, under certain assumptions, such decoupling also applies in the general case of multiple sinks and arbitrary network demands. We show that these assumptions are significantly restrictive, and further provide examples to substantiate the loss, including settings where removing the assumptions yields unbounded performance gains. Finally, an approach to solving the unconstrained problem, where routing and coding cannot be decoupled, is derived based on Han and Kobayashi's achievability region for multi-terminal coding.

In this paper we propose a novel distributed lossless compression scheme for hyperspectral images. All the images/bands are encoded independently, and the spectral correlation is exploited using distributed coding technologies in order to achieve low encoding complexity. At the encoder, sub-sampled images are successively encoded and transmitted. At the decoder, side information is generated with the knowledge of decoded sub-sampled images and other previously decoded bands. Reference bands are adaptively selected, and sliding window prediction or k nearest neighbor prediction is performed to capture the spatially varying spectral characteristics. Experimental results on AVRIS data demonstrate that the proposed scheme achieves competitive compression performance with respect to other state-of-the-art 3D codecs and with even lower encoding complexity than 2D codecs.

In this paper we propose an adaptive Wyner-Ziv (WZ) coding scheme for non-binary correlated sources with side information at the decoder. At the encoder, a low density parity check (LDPC) code is employed to implement Slepian-Wolf (SW) coding for each bit-plane independently. The joint "source-channel" decoder, which combines SW decoding and dequantizing in a single step, preserves the symbol-domain correlation and decreases the distortion. Moreover, the incorporation of particle-based belief propagation (BP) in the decoder can extend the scheme to perform an online estimation of the correlation and enhance the BP decoding performance simultaneously. Our proposed framework is universal and can be applied to any parametric correlation model.

distributed joint source-channel coding technique is finding its application in the ever evolving world of telecommunication, especially in the sensor network paradigm. The unique characteristics of the sensor networks are giving birth to new signal processing techniques and shifting the processing burden from the transmitter to the receiver side. The nodes of sensor networks, when deployed over particular area for specific observations, often exhibit spatial as well as temporal correlation in their observation. In this paper we presented a new technique to efficiently transmit observed data to the sink node. The technique makes it feasible to transmit data over the sensor web reliably and cost efficiently. We have achieved this goal by utilizing the distributed source coding theory and the cooperative communication. We have applied symmetric Slepain-Wolf compression and have used regular LDPC code with code rate 1/2. The simulation results show that the scheme is efficient as well as reliable.

In this paper, we propose an iteration-free algorithm to find the optimal configuration, including transmit power and source coding rates, to maximize the lifetime of a cluster utilizing Slepian-Wolf source coding of data sent to a fusion center. Exact closed form solutions are derived when the fusion center is not energy constrained. When the fusion center is energy constrained, a near optimum solution is provided. Numerical results demonstrating the performance of the proposed algorithms are also provided.

We introduce Hamming Codes for Multiple sources (HCMSs) as a potential solution of perfect Slepian-Wolf (SW) coding for arbitrary number of terminals. Moreover, we study the case with three sources in detail. We present the necessary conditions of a perfect SW code and show that there exists infinite number of HCMSs. Moreover, we show that for perfect SW code with sufficiently long code length, the compression rates of different sources can be trade-off flexibly.

Hyperspectral images are of very large data size and highly correlated in neighboring bands, therefore, it is necessary to realize the efficient compression performance on the condition of low encoding complexity. In this paper, we propose a method based on both partitioning embedded block and lossless adaptive-distributed arithmetic coding (LADAC). Combined with three-dimensional wavelet transform and SW-SPECK algorithm, LADAC is adopted according to the correlation between the adjacent bit-plane. Experimental results show that our proposed algorithm outperforms 3D-SPECK, furthermore, our method need not take the inter-band prediction or transform into account, so the complexity is small relatively.
