Onboard Low-Complexity Compression of Solar Stereo Images

We propose an adaptive distributed compression solution using particle filtering that tracks correlation, as well as performing disparity estimation, at the decoder side. The proposed algorithm is tested on the stereo solar images captured by the twin satellites system of NASA's Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory (STEREO) project. Our experimental results show improved compression performance w.r.t. to a benchmark compression scheme, accurate correlation estimation by our proposed particle-based belief propagation algorithm, and significant peak signal-to-noise ratio improvement over traditional separate bit-plane decoding without dynamic correlation and disparity estimation.

Resource management (RM) is a critical action in systems with limited resources such as sensor networks. Efficient RM depends heavily upon the availability of accurate information on the state of available resources. However, exchange of state information incurs an overhead on the system. In this paper, the sensing and computing resource management in sensor networks is considered. A lossless, distributed source-coding framework is presented to model the exchange of state information. The framework enables the characterization of the interplay between the performance and overhead of RM by leveraging the correlation among the state information of various nodes. Moreover, the proposed framework enables an improved estimate of the lower bound for the minimum control overhead necessary to accurately describe the state of nodes in the network. This improvement is achieved by exploiting the correlation among the state information of nodes as well as the available information on prior resource allocation actions as side information.

In this paper we propose an adaptive Wyner-Ziv (WZ) coding scheme for non-binary correlated sources with side information at the decoder. At the encoder, a low density parity check (LDPC) code is employed to implement Slepian-Wolf (SW) coding for each bit-plane independently. The joint "source-channel" decoder, which combines SW decoding and dequantizing in a single step, preserves the symbol-domain correlation and decreases the distortion. Moreover, the incorporation of particle-based belief propagation (BP) in the decoder can extend the scheme to perform an online estimation of the correlation and enhance the BP decoding performance simultaneously. Our proposed framework is universal and can be applied to any parametric correlation model.

In this paper, we propose a scheme for distributed source coding, using low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes to compress close to the Slepian-Wolf limit for correlated binary sources. First, we develop a conventional Belief Propagation (BP) algorithm LDPC decoder which takes the syndrome information into account. Subsequently, modelling the correlation between the sources as a binary symmetric channel (BSC), we replace the received probabilities in the conventional channel with the cross over probability. The performance achieved is seen to be better than previously published schemes for similar block length and code rate.

Recently, federated learning (FL), which replaces data sharing with model sharing, has emerged as an efficient and privacy-friendly machine learning paradigm. One of the main challenges in FL is the huge communication cost for model aggregation. Many compression/quantization schemes have been proposed to reduce the communication cost of model aggregation, with remarkable results. However, the following two questions remain unanswered: What are the performance limits of model aggregation? How much can FL convergence performance be improved by modifying existing model aggregation schemes? In this paper, we manage to answer these two questions. Specifically, for the first question, we put forth a general model aggregation performance analysis framework based on the rate-distortion theory. We then derive an inner bound of the rate-distortion region of model aggregation. For the second question, we develop an algorithm to search for the minimum achievable aggregation distortion, which, combined with the achievability scheme of the derived inner bound, induces a method to approximate the limits of FL convergence performance numerically. Numerical results demonstrate that the baseline model aggregation schemes still have great potential for further improvement.

The ability to efficiently switch from one pre-encoded video stream to another is a valuable attribute for a variety of interactive streaming applications, such as switching among streams of the same video encoded in different bit-rates for real-time bandwidth adaptation, or view-switching among videos capturing the same dynamic 3D scene but from different viewpoints. It is well known that intracoded I-frames can be used at switch boundaries to facilitate streamswitching. However, the size of an I-frame is large, making frequent insertion impractical. A recent proposal towards a more efficient stream-switching mechanism is distributed source coding (DSC), which exploits worst-case correlation between a set of potential predictor frames in the decoder buffer (called side information (SI) frames) and a target frame to lower encoding rate. However, the conventional use of bit-plane and channel coding means the encoding and decoding complexity of DSC frames is large. In this paper, we pursue a novel approach to the stream-switching problem based on the concept of "signal merging", using piecewise constant (pwc) function as the merge operator. Specifically, we propose a new merge mode for a code block, where for each k-th transform coefficient in the block, we encode appropriate step size and horizontal shift parameters at the encoder, so that the resulting floor function at the decoder can map corresponding coefficients from any SI frame to the same reconstructed value, resulting in an identically merged signal. The selection of shift parameter per coefficient, as well as coding modes between intra and merge per block, are optimized in a rate-distortion (RD) optimal manner. Experiments show encouraging coding gain over a previous implementation of DSC frame at low-to mid-bitrates at reduced computation complexity.

In this paper, we show that there is no advantage of using non-local cooperation between source encoders in improving the optimal compression rate (or rate region) for some canonical distributed compression tasks. The tasks are the lossless distributed compression, the lossless compression with a helper, and some special cases of the lossy distributed compression for 2-component discrete memoryless sources. These negative results for distributed source coding contrast with those for multi-user channel coding: quantum or general no-signaling cooperation between channel encoders improves the capacity region for some multiple access and interference channels.

This paper studies the problem of correlated data gathering in wireless sensor networks. For a maximum network utility, an efficient data capture and transmission framework is proposed for correlated sources, where localized S-W source coding, network coding based flow control and opportunistic routing are jointly optimized. To increase the throughput and guarantee the decodability simultaneously, a dynamic network coding strategy is proposed, with which the intermediate node can easily decide whether to make a combination among the incoming flows. Also, an opportunistic routing approach is presented, which adopts a new metric (minimum congestion price) for forwarding node selection and results in a maximum utility benefit for the sensor nodes. Through the Lagrange dual and gradient approach, a fully distributed algorithm is represented. And the convergence and performance are validated by the numerical results.

distributed coding is a new paradigm for compressing correlated distributed sources, based on Slepian-Wolf and Wyner-Ziv theorem. This scheme is appropriate for wireless sensor network and distributed video coding. In this paper, we address the problem of coding two correlated non-binary sources with asymmetrical statistical dependency using the q-ary low-density parity-check accumulate (Q-LDPCA) codes. On one hand the use of Q-LDPCA codes in the proposed system makes coding without converting non-binary sources to binary bits feasible, and thus it overcomes the reduction in correlation caused by conversion. On the other hand it makes coding rate varying adaptively with correlation of the correlated sources with asymmetrical statistical dependency, so it is suitable for many practical applications of distributed coding where the correlated sources are highly non-ergodic. Experiment shows that the proposed system performs better than coding by binary LDPC code with conversion first.
