This paper studies a joint coding/routing optimization between network lifetime and rate-distortion, by applying information theory to wireless visual sensor networks for correlated sources. Arbitrary coding (distributed source coding and network coding) from both combinatorial optimization and information theory could make significant progress towards the performance limit of information networks and tractable. Also, multipath routing can spread energy utilization across nodes within the entire network to keep a potentially longer lifetime, and solve the wireless contention issues by the splitting traffic. The objective function not only keeps a total energy consumption of encoding power, transmission power, and reception power minimized, but ensures the information received by sink nodes to approximately reconstruct the visual field. Based on the localized Slepian-Wolf coding and network coding-based multipath routing, the balance problem between distortion (capacity) and lifetime (costs) is modeled as an optimization formulation with a distributed solution. Through a primal decomposition, a two-level optimization is relaxed with Lagrangian dualization and solved with the gradient algorithm. The low-level optimization problem is decomposed into a secondary master dual problem (encoding, energy, and congestion prices update) with four cross-layer subproblems: a rate control problem, a channel contention problem, a distortion control problem, and an energy conservation problem. Numerical results validate the convergence and performance of the proposed algorithm.

It is well-known that a biometric fuzzy vault can be constructed by applying an error correcting code (ECC) to a biometric signal. This is attractive because authentication only requires the check bits of the ECC to be stored on the access control device, whereas the personal biometric traits need not be stored. For a given coding rate, the ECC attempts to correct the errors between an enrollment biometric and the provided probe, and authenticates if it is successful in doing so. Unfortunately, most implementations of biometric fuzzy vaults have very poor robustness to the inherent noisiness of biometric measurements. In this paper, we provide ECC design considerations for secure biometric systems, which provide both better robustness and greater security. In particular, for any feature extraction algorithm, we propose to reorder the feature bits according to their reliability, and associate the reliable bits with high-degree variable nodes in the graph of the ECC. Further, the reliability of a bit is measured at enrollment and used to initialize the ECC decoding. Experiments on an extensive database show considerable reduction in the false reject rate, while restricting the successful attack rate to a very low value.

This paper presents a practical coding scheme for the direct symmetric multiterminal source coding problem with remote source, when the noise between the remote source and the observations is Gaussian-Bernoulli-Gaussian. The idea behind the design is to take advantage from the observed symbols being in the real field, in order to perform low-dimensional compressed sensing. The coding scheme is based on channel coding techniques involving BCH codes over the real field. Simulations with respect to the rate distortion performance are provided, along with insights about optimization issues. Robustness to variations of the probability of impulse is also investigated. Perspectives about the application to the CEO problem in presence of Gaussian-Bernoulli-Gaussian correlation noise between the remote source and the observations conclude the paper.

distributed source coding strongly depends on the knowledge of statistical dependency between source and side information. In transform domain Wyner-Ziv video coding (TDWZ) this statistical dependency (also known as correlation noise) has been usually modeled by a unique Laplacian distribution for each frequency band. In this paper, we propose a method to define different classes of correlation noise for each frequency band based on the accuracy of the side information. With this approach the correlation between source and side information is estimated separately for each frequency band of each class. Therefore, the decoder can discriminate blocks in order to estimate the correlation noise of their frequency bands. Simulation results show that applying the proposed method improves rate-distortion performance.

Symmetric distributed source coding has made great progress in the past several years. However, few attempts have been tried to use the symmetric distributed source coding schemes in real data compression scenarios. In this paper, with the inspiration of previous symmetric distributed source coding schemes, we first put forward a novel syndrome-based symmetric distributed coding scheme which can achieve the whole Slepian-Wolf rate region. Then we propose a general architecture for symmetric distributed multiview video schemes. Our experiments show very encouraging results. In the high-rate case, our scheme can achieve great rate saving from separate H.264 coding scheme at the same video quality.

Minimizing the sensor-node energy consumption is an important consideration when designing wireless sensor networks. In this paper, we focus on the energy consumption issues related to communication of data from correlated sensor nodes. An optimization algorithm is proposed for minimizing the overall energy consumption of the hardware and the physical link. We perform a detailed trade-off analysis of the circuit energy consumption, the transmission energy consumption, the transmission time, the modulation symbol size, and the channel coding rate, over a wide range of transmission distances and correlation values. Thus, a new optimized communication schedule with much lower energy consumption than our benchmark scheme of optimized uncorrelated uncoded transmission is obtained. Compared to this scheme, the total energy consumption may be reduced by more than 83.5% for a correlation value of 0.6 and a transmission distance of 100 m when using the results from the proposed optimization. This is significant with respect to increasing the lifetime of a wireless sensor network.

Motion Compensated Temporal Filtering (MCTF) has proved to be an efficient coding tool in the design of open-loop scalable video codecs. In this paper we propose a MCTF video coding scheme based on lifting where the prediction step is implemented using PRISM (Power efficient, Robust, hIgh compression Syndrome-based Multimedia coding), a video coding framework built on distributed source coding principles. We study the effect of integrating the update step at the encoder or at the decoder side. We show that the latter approach allows to improve the quality of the side information exploited during decoding. We present the analytical results obtained by modeling the video signal along the motion trajectories as a first order auto-regressive process. We show that the update step at the decoder allows to half the contribution of the quantization noise. We also include experimental results with real video data that demonstrate the potential of this approach when the video sequences are coded at low bitrates.

Wyner and Ziv characterized the rate distortion function for lossy source coding with side information at the decoder. It is well known that for the quadratic Gaussian case, the Wyner-Ziv rate-distortion function coincides with the conditional rate-distortion function. In this paper, we extend the problem to the coding of multivariate Gaussian source with multiple Gaussian side information at the decoder. The achievable region is obtained, and it is easily extended to the case that the difference between the source and the side information is multivariate Gaussian, no matter what distributions the source and the side information are. We apply this theoretical model to distributed Video coding (DVC) by considering the difference of the distributed frame (D frame) and the Side-information frame (S frame) to be multivariate Gaussian distributed. This introduces rate allocation problem into DVC, which can be solved by a reverse water-filling method. Simulation results show that around 1.5-2 dB coding gain benefits from the multivariate Gaussian Wyner-Ziv coding model.
