distributed source coding is a new paradigm for source compression, based on the information-theoretic results built upon by Slepian and Wolf, and Wyner and Ziv from the 1970s. Recently some practical applications of distributed source coding to video compression have been studied due to its advantage of lower encoding complexity over conventional video coding standards. In this paper, we proposed a new distributed source coding framework based on signal denoising techniques. To apply the proposed framework in video coding systems, we give a novel distributed video coding scheme. Our,experimental results show that the proposed scheme can achieve better coding efficiency while keeping the simple encoding property.

Light field imaging is becoming a key technology, which provides users with a realistic visual experience through the capability of dynamic viewpoint shifting. This ability comes at the cost of capturing huge amounts of information, leaving the problem of compression and transmission a challenge. The encoder complexity is the key to achieve efficient coding in conventional light field coding schemes, where a complicated prediction process is essentially used at the encoder side to exploit the redundancy present in the light field image. We employ distributed source coding (DSC) for light field images, which can extensively lift the computational requirement from the encoding side at the expense of increased computational complexity at the decoder side. The efficiency of DSC is heavily dependent on the quality of side information at the decoder. Therefore, we propose to leverage a learning-based view synthesis method, which takes into account the light field structure to generate high-quality side information. We compare our approach to distributed Video coding and distributed Multi-view Video coding schemes adapted to the light field framework and relevant standard-based approach, and demonstrate that the proposed view synthesis-based approach can achieve similar performance, while substantially reducing the number of key views to be transmitted.

distributed Video coding (DVC) is attracting attention as a paradigm for video compression. One reason is that it transfers the high complexity computation to the decoder. However, the DVC decoder that uses channel coding based on a belief propagation algorithm has complexity exceeding that of the H.264/AVC encoder. This paper proposes a parallelized DVC scheme that treats each bitplane independently. Unfortunately, simple parallelization schemes suffer low compression efficiency because they can't use additional side information for the decoding of subsequent bitplanes. Therefore, we propose an effective estimation method that can calculate the bit probability as accurately as possible by index assignment. Simulations show that the proposed system can reduce the decode time by up to about 30-35[%] with only slight parallelization loss.

This paper develops the sufficiency principle suitable for data reduction in decentralized inference systems. Both parallel and tandem networks are studied and we focus on the cases where observations at decentralized nodes are conditionally dependent. For a parallel network, through the introduction of a hidden variable that induces conditional independence among the observations, the locally sufficient statistics, defined with respect to the hidden variable, are shown to be globally sufficient for the parameter of inference interest. For a tandem network, the notion of conditional sufficiency is introduced and the related theories and tools are developed. Finally, connections between the sufficiency principle and some distributed source coding problems are explored.

It is well-known that a biometric fuzzy vault can be constructed by applying an error correcting code (ECC) to a biometric signal. This is attractive because authentication only requires the check bits of the ECC to be stored on the access control device, whereas the personal biometric traits need not be stored. For a given coding rate, the ECC attempts to correct the errors between an enrollment biometric and the provided probe, and authenticates if it is successful in doing so. Unfortunately, most implementations of biometric fuzzy vaults have very poor robustness to the inherent noisiness of biometric measurements. In this paper, we provide ECC design considerations for secure biometric systems, which provide both better robustness and greater security. In particular, for any feature extraction algorithm, we propose to reorder the feature bits according to their reliability, and associate the reliable bits with high-degree variable nodes in the graph of the ECC. Further, the reliability of a bit is measured at enrollment and used to initialize the ECC decoding. Experiments on an extensive database show considerable reduction in the false reject rate, while restricting the successful attack rate to a very low value.

In this paper, we propose a new Slepian-Wolf (SW) video coding that supports resolution-progressive transmission. It can realize low-delay low-resolution real time streaming as well as high lossless coding efficiency. Intra-frame video coding is performed as the base layer coder for down-sampled input video and a SW coder is used as the enhancement layer coder for lossless archiving. In order to improve SW loss less coding efficiency, we introduce inter-layer prediction between the base layer and the enhancement layer. It uses inter layer prediction to increase the accuracy of Motion Estimation (ME). Simulations show that the proposed scheme gives higher coding performance better than the JPEG2000 lossless mode.

This paper presents a practical coding scheme for the direct symmetric multiterminal source coding problem with remote source, when the noise between the remote source and the observations is Gaussian-Bernoulli-Gaussian. The idea behind the design is to take advantage from the observed symbols being in the real field, in order to perform low-dimensional compressed sensing. The coding scheme is based on channel coding techniques involving BCH codes over the real field. Simulations with respect to the rate distortion performance are provided, along with insights about optimization issues. Robustness to variations of the probability of impulse is also investigated. Perspectives about the application to the CEO problem in presence of Gaussian-Bernoulli-Gaussian correlation noise between the remote source and the observations conclude the paper.

In this article, we address the problem of distributed coding of three correlated memoryless Gaussian sources using punctured Turbo Codes. We first revisit the problem of distributed coding of two Gaussian sources. The impact of the distortion induced by the quantization of the side information on the performance of Wyner-Ziv decoding of two continuous valued Gaussian correlated sources is analyzed. Theoretic bounds as well as practical coding performances, when the side information is quantized, are given. This leads to the derivation of appropriate settings for the problem of distributed coding of three sources. The Wyner-Ziv theorem is then extended for three sources. Practical solutions using punctured Turbo Codes are described. Simulation results are presented and analyzed for different amounts of correlation.

In this paper, we consider a data collection network (DCN) system where sensors take samples and transmit them to a Fusion Center (FC). Signal correlation is modeled with signal sparseness. The number of compressed measurements which allows correct signal recovery at FC is investigated. This is done by studying the probability of signal recovery failure. The joint typical decoder (JT decoder) similar to the one proposed by Akcakaya and Tarokh is used to avoid dependence on particular choice of recovery routines. The following interesting results have been obtained: 1) The detection failure probability linearly converges to zero as the number of sensors increases. 2) The number of compressed measurements per sensor (PSM) needed for successful recovery converges to sparsity as the number of sensors increases.

distributed compression or distributed source coding (DSC) refers to separate compression and joint decompression of multiple correlated sources. Though theoretical foundations were set almost forty years ago, driven by applications such as wireless video surveillance and wireless multimedia communications, DSC has become and still is a very active research area with interest from both academia and industry. While the first decade of this century has seen massive progress in code designs and achievable bounds, recent work is focussed on applications and solving practical DSC limitations such as large codeword size, accurate correlation estimation, etc. The goal of this paper is to provide an overview of the exciting trends and novel applications such as security, remote sensing, wireless data gathering of correlated data, biomedical imaging and infotainment, that DSC makes possible.
