A Novel Consistent Quality Driven for JEM Based distributed video coding

distributed video coding (DVC) is an attractive and promising solution for low complexity constrained video applications, such as wireless sensor networks or wireless surveillance systems. In DVC, visual quality consistency is one of the most important issues to evaluate the performance of a DVC codec. However, it is the fact that the quality of the decoded frames that is achieved in most recent DVC codecs is not consistent and it is varied with high quality fluctuation. In this paper, we propose a novel DVC solution named Joint exploration model based DVC (JEM-DVC) to solve the problem, which can provide not only higher performance as compared to the traditional DVC solutions, but also an effective scheme for the quality consistency control. We first employ several advanced techniques that are provided in the Joint exploration model (JEM) of the future video coding standard (FVC) in the proposed JEM-DVC solution to effectively improve the performance of JEM-DVC codec. Subsequently, for consistent quality control, we propose two novel methods, named key frame quantization (KF-Q) and Wyner-Zip frame quantization (WZF-Q), which determine the optimal values of the quantization parameter (QP) and quantization matrix (QM) applied for the key and WZ frame coding, respectively. The optimal values of QP and QM are adaptively controlled and updated for every key and WZ frames to guarantee the consistent video quality for the proposed codec unlike the conventional approaches. Our proposed JEM-DVC is the first DVC codec in literature that employs the JEM coding technique, and then all of the results that are presented in this paper are new. The experimental results show that the proposed JEM-DVC significantly outperforms the relevant DVC benchmarks, notably the DISCOVER DVC and the recent H.265/HEVC based DVC, in terms of both Peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) performance and consistent visual quality.

distributed video coding (DVC) is a coding paradigm that entails low complexity encoding by exploiting the source statistics at the decoder. To improve the DVC coding efficiency, this paper presents a novel adaptive technique for mode decision to control and take advantage of skip mode and intra mode in DVC initially proposed by Luong et al. in 2013. The adaptive mode decision (AMD) is not only based on quality of key frames but also the rate of Wyner-Ziv (WZ) frames. To improve noise distribution estimation for a more accurate mode decision, a residual motion compensation is proposed to estimate a current noise residue based on a previously decoded frame. The experimental results, integrating AMD in two efficient DVC codecs, show that the proposed AMD DVC significantly improves the rate distortion performance without increasing the encoding complexity. For a GOP size of 2 on the set of six test sequences, the average (Bjontegaard) bitrate saving of the proposed codec is 35.5. on WZ frames compared with the DISCOVER codec. This saving is mainly achieved by AMD.

In distributed video coding (DVC), a low resolution video sequence is usually generated with spatial and/or temporal downsampling at an encoder. At a decoder side, interpolation is performed and the interpolated pixels are further refined by using an error-correcting code such as Turbo codes or LDPC. In our previous work, we proposed a spatial domain DVC which uses a line-based downsampling method called selective data pruning (SDP). SDP is used for reducing the spatial frame size before compression. After decoding, received frames are decoded and interpolated back to their original size by high-order edge-directed interpolation (HEDI). In this paper, we propose a modified high-order edge-directed interpolation (M-HEDI) to avoid interpolation artifacts. Experimental results show that the interpolated frames by using M-HEDI have higher quality than those using HEDI. The proposed method outperforms conventional DVCs and the video coding standard H.264/AVC in majority of all the test video sequences.

The distributed video coding (DVC) paradigm is suitable for devices which have limited encoding capabilities. However, it is characterized by excessive decoding delays which compromise their application for time constrained services. This limitation can be mitigated by adopting parallel DVC architectures. Yet, the traditional Gray-code or binary-code representations have a non-uniform distribution of mismatch across bit-planes, resulting in uneven decoding times which hinder parallel decoding. This work proposes an alternative indexing scheme, where mismatch is distributed more uniformly amongst bit-planes and thus comparable decoding delays are expected, facilitating parallel implementations. This method reduces decoding time by up to 32% compared to architectures using simple parallel techniques, with a slight loss of 0.06dB in RD performance.

distributed video coding (DVC) does not demand motion estimation (ME) and compensation (MC) at the encoder, but only at the decoder and so it is more suitable for applications that require a simple encoder, like wireless sensor networks. In DVC the video sequence is split into Key Frames (KFs) and Wyner-Ziv Frames (WZFs): the first are intra-coded and the latter are coded by a channel code and only the parity bits are sent to the decoder. The KFs are available at the decoder, while we need to estimate the WZF and correct this estimation with parity bits. One critical step is the estimation of the WZF. The method of the state of the art, with which we compare, is given by DISCOVER. It estimates the WZF by linear interpolating the two adjacent KFs. We propose a higher order motion interpolation for WZF estimation by using four KFs. Due to the high computational efforts, we propose also a fast algorithm that halves the complexity of the previous method. We note that the results of the fast method are comparable with the original one. An other proposal is to increase the density of the motion vector field in order to improve the estimation of the WZF.

In this paper, a two-description distributed video coding (2D-DVC) is proposed to address the robust video transmission of low-power captures. The odd/even framesplitting partitions a video into two subsequences to produce two descriptions. Each description consists of two parts, where part 1 is a zero-motion based H.264 coded bitstream of a subsequence and part 2 is a Wyner-Ziv coded bitstream of the other subsequence. As the redundant part, the Wyner-Ziv coded bitstream guarantees the lost subsequence is recovered when one description is lost. On the other hand, the redundancy degrades the rate-distortion performance as no loss occurs. Therefore, a residual 2D-DVC is employed to reduce the redundancy, where the difference of two subsequences is Wyner-Ziv encoded to generate the part 2 in each description. The experimental results show that the proposed schemes achieve better performance than the referenced one especially when the video motion is low. Moreover, our schemes maintain low-complexity encoding.

In a distributed video coding problem, use of a correct model for the correlation noise plays a significant role in improving the decoding performance and consequently in providing higher coding efficiency. In this work, we first study the predictive and additive correlation noise models at the DCT coefficient band level for transform-domain distributed video coding. Then, bounds on compression rates for encoding the quantized DCT coefficient band are obtained for both the correlation noise models. We then investigate how the distribution of the DCT coefficient bands in each WZ frame affects the compression rate bound in each correlation noise model. It is shown that for the DCT coefficient bands being non-uniformly distributed, the compression rate bound in the additive correlation noise model lower than that in the predictive one. Moreover, it is shown that selecting a wrong correlation model leads to compression rate loss in the decoder. The simulation results are provided to validate the theoretical investigation.

distributed video coding is a new video coding mode, and it can shift the computational complexity from encoder to decoder. That makes it very suitable for wireless video terminals with limited computing capabilities, memory and power. This technology is rapidly developing with emerging video applications such as wireless video surveillance, wireless digital camera and mobile video telephony. This papersummarizes the distributed video coding technology from the theory to the application from the perspective of basic principle, coding framework, key technology and development trend. On the basis of these, this paper proposes several aspects of distributed video coding that is worthy of further study.

This paper presents a novel hash-based distributed video coding (DVC) scheme that combines an accurate online correlation channel estimation (CCE) algorithm with an efficient side information refinement strategy, delivering state-of-the-art compression performance. The proposed DVC scheme applies layered bit-plane Wyner-Ziv coding and successively refines the CCE bit-plane-per-bit-plane during decoding. In addition, the side information is successively refined upon decoding of distinct refinement levels, grouping specific frequency bands of the discrete cosine transform. The proposed system not only outperforms the benchmark in DVC but several state-of-the-art side information refinement techniques and CCE methods as well.

In a transform domain distributed video coding scheme, the correlation between the current encoding unit, e.g. block and slice, and the corresponding side-information is modeled using a virtual channel. This correlation model is then used for rate allocation, quantization, and Wyner-Ziv coding. Since the encoder can only have an estimate of the correlation instead of the exact knowledge of the side-information, the decoder will fail to recover the quantized transformed coefficients with a nonzero probability. In this paper, we propose to integrate a scheme at the decoder to recover the undecoded coefficients using the spatial smoothness property of individual video frames. Simulation results demonstrated that, at different decoding failure probabilities, a transformed coefficient recovery scheme can significantly improve the quality of videos in terms of both PSNR and SSIM.
