The development of practical distributed video coding schemes is based on the consequence of information-theoretic bounds established in the 1970s by Slepian and Wolf for distributed lossless coding, and by Wyner and Ziv for lossy coding with decoder side information. In distributed video compression application, it is hard to accurately describe the non-stationary behavior of the virtual correlation channel between X and side information Y although it plays a very important role in overall system performance. In this paper, we implement a practical Slepian-Wolf asymmetric distributed video compression system using irregular LDPC codes. Moreover, based on exploiting the dependencies of previously decode bit planes from video frame X and side information Y, we present improvement schemes to divide different reliable regions. Our simulation results show improving schemes of exploiting the dependencies between previously decoded bit planes can get better overall encoding rate performance as BER approach zero. We also show, compared with BSC model, BC channel model is more suitable for distributed video compression scenario because of the non-stationary properties of the virtual correlation channel and adaptive detecting channel model parameters from previously adjacent decoded bit planes can provide more accurately initial belief messages from channel at LDPC decoder.

We consider a distributed video coding paradigm. Contrary to conventional paradigms, which perform motion estimation at the encoder, the distributed paradigm encodes each frame individually and jointly decodes subsequent frames. Therefore, encoding complexity is significantly reduced and transferred to the decoder. Our scheme is based on the Korner-Marton setup, which demonstrates how the difference between two signals can be compressed in a distributed manner using syndromes of a linear code. This approach is different from prior propositions, based on the Wyner-Ziv Theorem (source coding with side information). In the Predictive Korner-Marton (PKM) scheme, the encoder transmits only the least significant bits (LSBs) of the quantized pixels. The decoder then compensates for the missing MSB information by motion estimation based on the data's temporal structure. Our results show potential to this framework, both in terms of motion estimation accuracy and encoding complexity reduction, although the overall compression performance is still inferior to that of conventional video codecs.

video data is currently one of the mostly used/desired data that circulates today's digital environment. The paper aims at providing an overview on the emerging trends in the theoretical research that sustains the development of future, more efficient, acquisition, compression and transmission architectures for video. The focus is on delivering a good starting point in what compressive sampling and distributed video coding are all about and infer on scenarios that will mostly benefit from their advancement. It is concluded that 3D video and multi-purpose wireless mobile devices are some of the key emerging technologies that are likely to embrace these important theoretical results and transfer them into practice.

A motion-based side-information generation scheme with semi super-resolution for a scalable Wyner-Ziv coder framework is introduced. It is known that the performance of any Wyner-Ziv coder is heavily dependent on the efficiency of the side-information generation. We propose an iterative block based scheme to generate a semi super-resolution frame using the past and future reference frames which should be coded at full-resolution. To enable this side-information generation the framework should allow for low encoding complexity, reducing the spatial resolution only in the non-reference frames. The enhancement layer is produced using a residual frame of the reduced resolution encoded frame. The decoder first decodes the low resolution base layer and iteratively generates the side-information, along with channel decoding, to obtain a higher quality version of the decoded frame. Results of the implementation of the framework using the motion-based side-information in the H.263+ and H.264 standards are presented.

Wyner-Ziv video coding has become one of the hottest research topics in the video coding community due to the conceptual, theoretical and functional novelties it brings. Among the many practical architectures already available, feedback channel-based with channel coding, e.g. LDPC and turbo codes, solutions are rather popular. These solutions rely on decoder motion estimation based on periodic Intra coded key frames, setting the so-called GOP size, very much like in conventional video coding. This paper targets the rate-distortion and complexity performance study of this type of Wyner-Ziv coding solution as a function of the GOP size, considering both LPDC and turbo codes.

The rate-distortion (R-D) performance of WynerZiv (WZ) video coding strongly depends on modeling the correlation noise (CN) between the original frame and its side information (SI) frame. The CN model parameters are generally estimated at the decoder in the absence of original video frames. Most of previous methods in the literatures did not take the adverse effects of wireless transmission errors to the estimation of the CN model parameters into account. In this paper, we propose a new scheme of CN model estimation for WZ video transmission over wireless networks with packet erasures and bit errors. The presented scheme can alleviate the influence of transmission errors on the accuracy of CN model estimation by using error concealment for key frames and refinement to the estimated residual frames. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme can improve the R-D performance of WZ video transmission over wireless networks compared with the scheme that have no error concealment for key frames and refinement to the estimated residual frames.

In this paper, we apply the mutual bi-directional frame coding (MB-frame coding) to our previous proposed padding block based distributed video coding (DVC) scheme for performance improvement. Basically, in the MB-frame coding approach, we adopt the mutual forward and backward video sequence frames to process within reference frames in each individual Group of Pictures (GOP) until no skip blocks could be padded at decoder. It is worth to noting that with this approach the computation complexity does not increase at encoder side, which is consistent with the basic concept to meet the low complexity DVC requirement. Indeed, it achieves the overall system performance improvement with the cost of increasing for average 30 % of computation complexity at decoder side. Via computer simulation we show that the experimental results with the MB frame coding approach has about 0.2 dB gain over the one which does not employ the MB-frames coding scheme.

distributed video coding (DVC) is a video coding archetype that explores the source statistics at the decoder and hence reducing the encoder complexity. The Rate-Distortion (RD) performance of DVC strongly depends on the quality of the side information (SI) generation. So, efficient techniques to generate reliable SI are therefore essential to obtain a better quality of decoded video. In this paper, a SI generation technique based on radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) is proposed. RBF networks are widely used in various applications including function approximation and pattern recognition. Compared to other feed-forward neural networks, it has many advantages which makes it more suitable for nonlinear system modeling. The proposed model is trained and tested with different standard video sequences. The proposed scheme is merged with Transform Domain Wyner-Ziv (TDWZ) architecture and different experiments are performed to derive an overall conclusion. The overall experimental results demonstrate that the proposed technique produces an improved result in terms of Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR), bit rate, number of parity requests, decoding time complexity, etc. as compared to the existing state-of-art techniques.

Wyner-Ziv coding, also known as distributed video coding, is currently a very hot research topic in video coding due to the new opportunities it opens. This paper applies the distributed video coding principles to stereo video coding, to propose a practical solution for Wyner-Ziv stereo coding based on mask-based fusion of temporal and spatial side informations. The architecture includes a low-complexity encoder and avoids any communication between the cameras/encoders. While the rate-distortion (RD) performance strongly depends on the motion-based frame interpolation (MBFI) and disparity-based frame estimation (DBFE) solutions, first results show that the proposed approach is promising and there are still issues to address.

Multiple description coding (MDC) provides stable wireless multimedia communications with the help of multiple transmission paths, while distributed video coding (DVC) effectively shifts the encoder complexity to decoder for mobile media devices. We proposed to combine MDC with DVC, abbreviated as MDVC, to construct a reliable and efficient video codec system. To improve the codec performance, the DPCM prediction gain is exploited from the correlations among sub-video sequences inside the MDVC to increase the reconstructed video quality. In addition, a MDVC central decoder control method, operated dynamically at frame-level, is proposed to improve the adaptation capability, as compared to the current MDC central decoder that selects one best description for the output video. The intra-and inter-correlations among MDC descriptions were investigated to make this frame selection decision for the central decoder. Simulations showed that the proposed MDVC control method demonstrates higher average PSNR and lower PSNR variations of the output videos, with the help of DPCM prediction gain and the efficient central decoder control method that correctly selected high quality WZ frames for low quality key-frames.
