Frequency-adaptive cancellation of harmonic disturbances at non-measurable positions of steel strips

The active rejection of harmonic disturbances is of great importance in many industrial applications. For instance, transverse vibrations of steel strips in hot-dip galvanizing lines entail an inhomogeneous zinc coating of the final product. Controlling the vibrations of these steel strips is particularly complicated because their direct measurement at the relevant location is not available. More specifically, the disturbance input, the displacement measurement, the electromagnetic actuator which acts as control input, and the system output to be controlled are all located at different positions along the steel strip. The control scheme proposed in this work minimizes the harmonic steady-state response of the system output to be controlled. In contrast to a state-space approach, the method does not utilize a high-dimensional state observer, and requires only modest computational resources during online operation. Furthermore, negative effects in the closed-loop system due to observation or control spillover are effectively avoided. The developed harmonic disturbance rejection scheme is validated by experiments conducted on a test rig that mimics the conditions from an industrial hot-dip galvanizing line.

Observer Based Nonlinear Control of a Rotating Flexible Beam ⁎

This paper presents an observer based nonlinear control for a flexible beam clamped on a rotating inertia. The considered model is composed by a set of Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) interconnected with an Ordinary Differential Equation (ODE), with control input in the ODE. The control problem consists in orienting the beam at the desired position, maintaining the flexible vibrations as low as possible. To this end, it is presented a nonlinear controller that depends on the beam’s state. An Observer is designed to reconstruct the infinite dimensional state, and the estimated state is used in the nonlinear controller instead of the real one. Assuming well-posedness of the closed loop system, it is shown the exponential convergence of the estimated state, and the asymptotic stability of the closed loop system. Numerical simulations are presented to characterize the closed loop behaviour with different choices of observer’s parameters.

Many industrial processes are affected by periodic disturbances. For instance, vibration of steel strips in hot-dip galvanizing lines entail an inhomogeneous zinc coating of the final product. Excitation by periodic disturbances is also frequently encountered in other control systems. Thus, a number of customized methods for rejection control of unwanted oscillations have been developed in the literature. In this paper, a method for eliminating a multi-harmonic periodic disturbance at an arbitrary user-defined position of a steel strip is proposed. The control task is particularly complicated because the disturbance input, a (single) displacement sensor, a (single) electromagnetic actuator, and the system output to be controlled are located at different positions along the strip. In addition, the electromagnetic actuator used as control input features neither a force sensor nor a distance sensor for measuring the air gap between the strip and the magnetic core. Hence, the actuator operates in a pure feedforward mode. The developed control method is validated by means of an experimental test rig that mimics a scenario from an industrial hot-dip galvanizing line. A new control problem is posed and solved: regulation problem for the one-dimensional Klein-Gordon and semilinear wave equations with Neumann boundary conditions in the case when the control acts at both ends of the space interval ("two-point control"). A control algorithm based on the speed-gradient method is proposed. The global exponential stability of the closed loop system for the case of the Klein-Gordon equation is established by means of a new Lyapunov functional. This results is extended to the case of the semilinear wave equation by means of linearization. The two-point energy control problem for the sine-Gordon and semilinear wave equations is analyzed by simulation. In hot-dip galvanizing lines for steel strips, it is important to ensure a homogeneous zinc layer thickness. For this, vibrations of the strip at the gas wiping dies, where excess liquid zinc is blown off, must be suppressed. These vibrations typically exhibit a dominant sinusoidal shape and the excitation process, the frequency, the amplitude, and the phase are generally unknown. In modem plants, electromagnetic actuators are employed to enable a contactless vibration and shape control of the steel strip. Vibration control of flexible structures is well established in literature. However, in the considered application the disturbance (source of periodic excitation), the control input (force of electromagnetic actuators), the sensor output (strip displacement) and the desired system output (strip displacement at the gas wiping dies) are all located at different positions along the strip, which makes the overall control task quite challenging. In this paper, a control concept consisting of a linear quadratic regulator combined with a disturbance feedforward concept based on the theory of invariant manifolds and an Extended Kalman Filter is developed. The proposed control strategy is successfully tested on an experimental test rig for different scenarios.

The heave motion of a floating rig induces pressure oscillations in the well when the heave compensators are disabled during connections. In this paper we discuss several factors affecting the achievable performance when rejecting such pressure oscillations by feedforward by controlling the opening of the topside choke. Here, the well is modeled as a semilinear hyperbolic system with a predictor-based control law that achieves exact pressure tracking at one location in the well in the nominal case. The focus is on wells with large friction (i.e. deep wells with high-viscosity drilling muds), where large control inputs are required at the topside choke. Early- and late-lumping observer designs for long hydraulic pipelines: Application to pumped-storage power plants

Pumped-storage power plants typically feature very long hydraulic pipelines, which can be modeled by a set of partial differential equations. The estimation of the pressure and volumetric flow along the pipes is an important task for the operation of such a plant. Therefore, this work compares different early- and late-lumping-based observer designs for this system. Two late-lumping observers, ie, a Lyapunov-based design and an observer using the backstepping design method, are examined. The Lyapunov-based approach uses a simple boundary correction to stabilize the estimation error dynamics. In contrast, the backstepping-based approach allows utilizing additional in-domain correction to obtain a faster rate of convergence. For the implementation of these distributed-parameter observers, the spectral element method as a flexible and computationally efficient discretization method is introduced. It is shown that, compared with that of the Lyapunov-based design, the discretization of the backstepping-based design requires additional spatial grid points for the accurate approximation of its feedback gains. For the early-lumping approach, the spectral element method is used to approximate the model equations by a system of differential equations. Based on this approximation, an extended Kalman filter is designed. All observer designs are validated and compared for a representative test case.

Optimizing placement of the control points at synthesis of the heating process control

Consideration was given to the problem of optimizing the locations of the control points over the object state within the framework of the optimal feedback control problems of the distributed parameter objects. For certainty, considered was heating of a rod in furnace where the temperature of controlled vs. the temperature measured at certain points of the rod. The problem is reduced to that of parametric optimal control of an initial-boundary value problem where unknown current values of temperature at the measurement points occur at the right side of its equation and the boundary conditions. Formulas were derived for the components of the objective functional gradient with respect to the coordinates of the control point locations and the parameters of the measurement-dependent current control. The results of the carried out numerical experiments were given.
