Performance Modeling of diversity Coded Path Protection in OBS/OPS Networks

In bufferless optical burst/packet switched (OBS/OPS) networks, data (bursts or packets) may be lost due to contention or equipment failure. diversity coding-based path protection schemes can he used to protect data from a single-trunk failure with potentially more efficient resource utilization compared to dedicated (e.g., 1 + 1) path protection schemes and help reduce the burst/packet loss ratio. This paper provides a scalable and accurate burst/packet loss ratio approximation based on the Erlang fixed-point approximation for networks that employ protection based on diversity coding and for networks that employ protection based on both diversity coding and 1 + 1 path protection. We use discrete event simulations to assess the accuracy of the approximation based on a wide range of scenarios in a 10-node circular lattice and NSFNet networks. Further, we discuss the effect of parameter settings and the effect of the choice of the wavelength selection method on the accuracy of the approximation. We consider scenarios without wavelength conversion and with full wavelength conversion and two types of users: premium and regular. The premium users, typically of mission critical services, receive protection while the regular users do not. We compare diversity coding and 1 + 1 path protection in a 10-node circular lattice network. The results show that for this example network, for the premium users and under low traffic load, the burst/packet loss ratio in OBS/OPS networks is lower for diversity coding compared to 1 + 1 path protection. However, under heavy traffic load, we observe a lower loss ratio for the case of 1 + 1 path protection.

diversity and Network coding (DC-NC), which is the synergistic combination of diversity coding and Network coding, was recently introduced to provide near instant link failure recovery and efficient transmission in a wide variety of network architectures. In this paper, DC-NC is applied to a multi-hop Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) and diversity coding (DC) is applied within each link in a multi-hop WSN to enable extremely high reliability with very rapid recovery from wireless link/node failures and the loss of data stream(s) at each link and also provide efficient transmission, which are very important metrics for WSNs. Furthermore, the reliability and rapid fault recovery can be extended to broadcasting applications, along with increased throughput.

Routing protocols in wireless sensor network are vulnerable to various malicious security attacks that can degrade network performance and lifetime. This becomes more important in cluster routing protocols that is composed of multiple node and cluster head, such as low energy adaptive clustering hierarchy (LEACH) protocol. Namely, if an attack succeeds in failing the cluster head, then the entire set of nodes fail. Therefore, it is necessary to develop robust recovery schemes to overcome security attacks and recover packets at short times. Hence this paper proposes a detection and recovery scheme for selective forwarding attacks in wireless sensor networks using LEACH protocol. The proposed solution features near-instantaneous recovery times, without the requirement for feedback or retransmissions once an attack occurs.

This paper presents an initial study on using diversity coding schemes for virtual network function (VNF) link and node failure recovery in 5G and beyond networks. In contrast to conventional link recovery methods, the proposed scheme offers near-instantaneous recovery times without retransmission requirements. Furthermore, the recovery scheme provides significant reduction in routing and capacity costs, at reduced number of redundant links and high number of traffic requests. Hence reliable recovery, node resiliency, reduced delays and ultra-low latency are achieved here. In addition, a mixed liner integer programming (MILP) optimization formulation model is also proposed for the VNF failure restoration.

Near instant link failure recovery and lower energy consumption can be achieved via the synergistic combination of diversity and modified Triangular Network coding (eDC-NC), an open-loop coding technique, in a wide variety of network architectures. In this paper, eDC-NC is applied to Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) to enable very rapid recovering from wireless link/node failures and provide low computational and energy cost, which are very important metrics for WSNs. It is shown that utilizing eDC-NC coding in WSNs can provide ultra-reliability with very rapid fault recovery, decrease energy consumption, and increase the network throughput for broadcasting applications.

Very fast link failure recovery and high throughput can be achieved via the synergistic combination of diversity and Network coding (DC-NC), an open-loop coding technique, in a wide variety of network architectures. In this paper, DC-NC is applied to enable recovering from a wireless link/node failure in the fronthaul portion of downlink Coordinated Multi Point (CoMP) 5G wireless network in a C-RAN environment. Our results demonstrate that by utilizing DC-NC coding in CoMP systems, resource consumption is reduced by about one-third and ultra-reliability with near-instantaneous fault recovery is achieved.

The synergistic combination of diversity and Network coding (DC-NC) was previously introduced to provide very low end-to-end latency in recovering from a link failure and improve the throughput for a wide variety of network architectures. This paper is directed towards further improving DC-NC to be able to tolerate multiple, simultaneous link failures with less computational complexity. In this way, reliability will be maximized and the recovery time from multiple link or node failures is reduced in SG fronthaul wireless networks. This is accomplished by modifying Triangular Network coding (TNC) to create enhanced DC-NC (eDC-NC) that is applied to 5G wireless Fog computing-based Radio Access Networks (Fog-RAN). Our results show that using eDC-NC coding in Fog-RAN fronthaul network will provide ultra-reliability and enable near instantaneous fault recovery while retaining the throughput improvement feature of DC-NC. In addition, the scalability of eDC-NC coding is demonstrated. Furthermore, it is shown that the redundancy percentage for complete protection is always less than 50% for the practical cases that were evaluated.

Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs) promise a significant improvement in the reliability of monitoring and treating people's health. A WBAN comprises a number of intelligent biosensors and actuators that may either be implanted in vivo or mounted on the surface of the human body, and that are capable of wireless communication to one or more external nodes that are in close proximity to the human body. In this paper, we propose a new and efficient feedforward error-control technology, Temporal diversity coding (TDC), to increase the robustness and reliability of Wireless Body Area networks. Temporal diversity coding applies diversity coding in time and space to improve the WBAN's performance. We demonstrate that by implementing this novel technique, we can achieve significant improvement (~50%) in throughput compared to extant WBANs.

In this paper we study the application of diversity coding to enable near-instantaneous recovery from link failures in 5G wireless Cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN) networks. We focus on networks where remote radio heads in a C-RAN are connected to the baseband unit in two hierarchical tiers with optical and wireless fronthaul links. In order to avoid retransmissions and re-routing delays due to link failures in wireless links, we investigate the use diversity coding where a feedforward network design uses forward error control across spatially diverse paths to enable reliable networking with minimal delay.

This paper is directed towards improving both throughput and reliability of 5G wireless Cloud Radio Access Networks (C-RANs) by the synergistic combination of diversity coding and Network coding (DC-NC). In this paper, we directly apply the concept of DC-NC coding to two network scenarios: first, remote radio heads in a C-RAN connected to the baseband unit in two hierarchical tiers with optical and wireless fronthaul links, second, most remote radio heads are connected directly to the baseband unit via wireless links. Our results show that the combination of diversity and Network coding increases the throughput of fronthaul networks for downlink broadcasting or multicasting applications, while enabling reliable networking with near-instant latency in fault recovery by using forward error control across spatially diverse paths. Moreover, the number of redundant links inherent in diversity coding can be decreased using the proposed scheme.
