Low quality document image modeling and enhancement

In order to tackle problems such as shadow-through and bleed-through, a novel defect model is developed which generates physically damaged document images. This model addresses physical degradation, such as aging and ink seepage. Based on the diffusive nature of the physical defects, the model is designed using virtual diffusion processes. Then, based on this degradation model, a restoration method is proposed and used to fix the bleed-through effect in double-sided document images using the reverse diffusion process. Subjective and objective evaluations are performed on both the degradation model and the restoration method. The experiments show promising results on both real and generated data.

Comparative Semantic document Layout Analysis for Enhanced document image Retrieval

Tons of handwritten document images, either historical or continuously reproduced in everyday life, are information-rich, awaiting extensive advanced technological attention from academic and industrial communities. document layout analysis (DLA) is a primary key that opens many doors for further sophisticated document image processing and understanding. It has been a primary interest of massive research on various domains, including document image retrieval (DIR), whereas little attention was paid to valuable semantic aspects. Recently, semantic DLA (SDLA) emerged to enable semantic information derivation and more invariant characterization. The viability of comparative-based SDLA for inferring comparative semantic characteristics has yet to be investigated. In this research, new comparative characteristics are proposed to empower more perceptive SDLA and improve retrieval capabilities. The proposed Comparative-SDLA not only utilizes the latent potency of semanticity in effectively characterizing handwritten document image layout but also exploits the power of comparability between relative semantic characteristics for further robust and enhanced DIR. A novel methodology framework is thoroughly described, implicating pairwise comparative-based automatic image annotation, document ranking by comparative characteristic, and comparative feature extraction. Several retrieval experiments on a sizable complex handwritten document dataset are conducted with extended performance evaluation, analysis, and comparison for comparative-based methods against non-comparative counterparts, highlighting promising capabilities to extend for other practical applications.

Multi-scale document image rectification utilising text-features

A multi-scale document image rectification method based on text-features is presented. In contrast to most used text-lines, the text-features are more robust to depict the distortions of document images with multi-column layouts, multi-type fonts or non-textural objects. Then, the rectification problem is formulated utilising a reverse strategy according to the text-features. The experiments have demonstrated the flexibility and high performance of the approach.

Segmentation from document images with a complex background is presented. The background component is estimated by low-rank modelling. With the estimated background component, the original image is further transformed into a compensated image which is easily segmented with Otsu's thresholding algorithm to obtain a good binarisation result. Experiments on the Bickley diary and the DIBCO 2013 datasets validate the feasibility of the proposed method.

Accelerated Hough transform using rectangular image decomposition

A novel fast method for evaluating the Hough transform is proposed, which can be used to accelerate detection of prevalent linear formations in binary images. An image is decomposed using rectangular blocks and the contribution of each whole block to the Hough transform space is evaluated, rather than the contribution of each image point. The resulting acceleration in the calculation of the Hough transform field is demonstrated in two image processing experiments related to object axis identification and skew detection of digitised documents.

image Enhancement Using the Hypothesis Selection Filter: Theory and Application to JPEG Decoding

We introduce the hypothesis selection filter (HSF) as a new approach for image quality enhancement. We assume that a set of filters has been selected a priori to improve the quality of a distorted image containing regions with different characteristics. At each pixel, HSF uses a locally computed feature vector to predict the relative performance of the filters in estimating the corresponding pixel intensity in the original undistorted image. The prediction result then determines the proportion of each filter used to obtain the final processed output. In this way, the HSF serves as a framework for combining the outputs of a number of different user selected filters, each best suited for a different region of an image. We formulate our scheme in a probabilistic framework where the HSF output is obtained as the Bayesian minimum mean square error estimate of the original image. Maximum likelihood estimates of the model parameters are determined from an offline fully unsupervised training procedure that is derived from the expectation-maximization algorithm. To illustrate how to apply the HSF and to demonstrate its potential, we apply our scheme as a post-processing step to improve the decoding quality of JPEG-encoded document images. The scheme consistently improves the quality of the decoded image over a variety of image content with different characteristics. We show that our scheme results in quantitative improvements over several other state-of-the-art JPEG decoding methods.

Robust document image Binarization Technique for Degraded document images

Segmentation of text from badly degraded document images is a very challenging task due to the high inter/intra-variation between the document background and the foreground text of different document images. In this paper, we propose a novel document image binarization technique that addresses these issues by using adaptive image contrast. The adaptive image contrast is a combination of the local image contrast and the local image gradient that is tolerant to text and background variation caused by different types of document degradations. In the proposed technique, an adaptive contrast map is first constructed for an input degraded document image. The contrast map is then binarized and combined with Canny's edge map to identify the text stroke edge pixels. The document text is further segmented by a local threshold that is estimated based on the intensities of detected text stroke edge pixels within a local window. The proposed method is simple, robust, and involves minimum parameter tuning. It has been tested on three public datasets that are used in the recent document image binarization contest (DIBCO) 2009 & 2011 and handwritten-DIBCO 2010 and achieves accuracies of 93.5%, 87.8%, and 92.03%, respectively, that are significantly higher than or close to that of the best-performing methods reported in the three contests. Experiments on the Bickley diary dataset that consists of several challenging bad quality document images also show the superior performance of our proposed method, compared with other techniques.

Generalization of Frei and Chen's approach to extract the lines and edges of a digital image

This work proposes the generalization to any k dimension of the approach suggested by Frei and Chen for line and edge detection in a digital image with square masks. With the proposed algorithm we can obtain information about the image lines and edges without modifying the rest of the image. To test these results we have applied the algorithm to biomedical images and geophysical images of archaeological prospections achieving optimal results.

Binarization of gray scale document images is one of the most important steps in automatic document image processing. In this paper, we present a two-stage document image binarization approach, which includes a top-down region-based binarization at the first stage and a neural network based binarization technique for the problematic blocks at the second stage after a feedback checking. Our two-stage approach is particularly effective for binarizing text images of highlighted or marked text. The region-based binarization method is fast and suitable for processing large document images. However, the block effect and regional edge noise are two unavoidable problems resulting in poor character segmentation and recognition. The neural network based classifier can achieve good performance in two-class classification problem such as the binarization of gray level document images. However, it is computationally costly. In our two-stage binarization approach, the feedback criteria are employed to keep the well binarized blocks from the first stage binarization and to re-binarize the problematic blocks at the second stage using the neural network binarizer to improve the character segmentation quality. Experimental results on a number of document images show that our two-stage binarization approach performs better than the single-stage binarization techniques tested in terms of character segmentation quality and computational cost.

document image binarization is still an active research area as shows the number of binarization techniques proposed since many decades. The binarization of degraded document images is still difficult and encourages the development of new algorithms. For the last decade, discrete conditional random fields have been successfully used for many domains such as automatic language analysis. In this paper, we propose a CRF based framework to explore the combination capabilities of this model by combining discrete outputs from several well known binarization algorithms. The framework uses two 1D CRF models on the horizontal and the vertical directions that are coupled for each pixel by the product of the marginal probabilities computed from the both models. Experiments are made on two datasets from the document image Binarization Contest (DIBCO) 2009 and 2011 and show best performances than most of the methods presented at DIBCO 2011.
