Software documentation is an asset for many activities in maintenance and evolution of software. To alleviate the problem of outdated or lost documentation and to improve program understanding, reverse engineering tools and documentation generators have been developed and used during development, maintenance, and evolution of software systems. In this paper, we report on the development of six tools that address different programming languages (e.g. COBOL, Java, and C), problem domains (e.g. banking, insurance, and engineering), and SE activities (e.g. maintenance and migration). While the development of these tools was driven by domain-specific requirements, an architecture that supports reuse of components for the analysis and visualization of software from different programming languages was pursued from the beginning. This resulted in a polyglot software platform for building reverse engineering tools and documentation generators. The software platform provides a modular set of programming language front-ends, static program analysis components and document/diagram generators. To evaluate effectiveness of the platform for tool creation, we conducted an industrial case study and discuss results on reuse potential, adoption of new languages and usage of a generic intermediate representation.

In this paper, we present OpenAPIDocGen2, a tool that generates on-demand class documentation based on source code and documentation analysis. For a given class, OpenAPIDocGen2 generates a combined documentation for it, which includes functionality descriptions, directives, domain concepts, usage examples, class/method roles, key methods, relevant classes/methods, characteristics and concepts classification, and usage scenarios.

Automated source code documentation approaches often describe methods in abstract terms, using the words contained in the static source code or code excerpts from repositories. In this paper, we describe DynamiDoc: a simple automated documentation generator based on dynamic analysis. Our representation-based approach traces the program being executed and records string representations of concrete argument values, a return value and a target object state before and after each method execution. Then, for each method, it generates documentation sentences with examples, such as "When called on [3, 1.2] with element = 3, the object changed to [1.2]". Advantages and shortcomings of the approach are listed. We also found out that the generated sentences are substantially shorter than the methods they describe. According to our small-scale study, the majority of objects in the generated documentation have their string representations overridden, which further confirms the potential usefulness of our approach. Finally, we propose an alternative, variable-based approach that describes the values of individual member variables, rather than the state of an object as a whole.

documentation generation is the process of creating the system documentation at different levels of abstraction from the source code for a legacy system. The main goal is to help the stakeholders to understand the system with representations at the appropriate abstraction level. We follow an architecture reconstruction method to create an architectural model of the system and we use a documentation generation technique to re-document its architecture. In this article, we present our XML based approach for generating the architectural documentation of a software system.

We show how hypertext-based program understanding tools can achieve new levels of abstraction by using inferred type information for cases where the subject software system is written in a weakly typed language. We propose TYPEEXPLORER, a tool for browsing COBOL legacy systems based on these types. The paper addresses (1) how types, an invented abstraction, can be presented meaningfully to software re-engineers;(2) the implementation techniques used to construct TYPEEXPLORER;and (3) the use of TYPEEXPLORER for understanding legacy systems, at the level of individual statements as well as at the level of the software architecture - which is illustrated by using TYPEEXPLORER to browse an industrial COBOL system of 100,000 lines of code. JSummarizer is an Eclipse plug-in for automatically generating natural language summaries of Java classes. The summary is based on the stereotype of the class, which implicitly encodes the design intent of the class and is automatically inferred by JSummarizer. The tool uses a set of predefined heuristics to determine what information will be reflected in the summary, and it uses natural language processing and generation techniques to form the summary. The generated summaries can be used to re-document the code and to help developers to easier understand large and complex classes.

This study explains important statement comments generated by Autocomment, which is an automatic comment generation framework described in [1]. To create the comments, the source code is not expected to be runnable, but to conliffm to the syntax rules of the Java programming language. Two types of comments are created: summary comments and important statement comments. How the important statements are extracted in a given Java source, how they are classified, how comments are generated for each type of important statement have been explained in this work.

This paper provides a survey of the emerging area of Large Language Models (LLMs) for Software Engineering (SE). It also sets out open research challenges for the application of LLMs to technical problems faced by software engineers. LLMs' emergent properties bring novelty and creativity with applications right across the spectrum of Software Engineering activities including coding, design, requirements, repair, refactoring, performance improvement, documentation and analytics. However, these very same emergent properties also pose significant technical challenges;we need techniques that can reliably weed out incorrect solutions, such as hallucinations. Our survey reveals the pivotal role that hybrid techniques (traditional SE plus LLMs) have to play in the development and deployment of reliable, efficient and effective LLM-based SE.

In this study, automatic comment generation for Java methods is described. It is sufficient that the codes conform to the syntax rules of the Java programming language, and it is not expected to be runnable. In order to generate comments, source code is examined syntactically. At this stage, only the method signature and its return type is needed. By working on open source Java projects, different templates have been developed for different method types. Using the compiled information which is the result of the examining source code that is currently being developed, the most suitable template is chosen and texts arc created. These texts explain the aim of the method. Created texts are added to source code as a comment.

Test suites and documentation capture similar information despite serving distinct purposes. Such redundancy introduces the risk that the artifacts inconsistently capture specifications. We present DScribe, an approach that leverages the redundant information in tests and documentation to reduce the cost of creating them and the threat of inconsistencies. DScribe allows developers to define simple templates that jointly capture the structure to test and document a specification. They can then use these templates to generate consistent and checkable tests and documentation. By linking documentation to unit tests, DScribe ensures documentation accuracy as outdated documentation is flagged by failing tests. DScribe's template-based approach also enforces a uniform style throughout the artifacts.
