The evaluation of modeling languages for augmented reality applications poses particular challenges due to the three-dimensional environment they target. The previously introduced Augmented Reality Workflow modeling language (ARWFML) enables the model-based creation of augmented reality scenarios without programming knowledge. Building upon the first design cycle of the language's specification, this paper presents two further design iterations for refining the language based on multi-faceted evaluations. These include a comparative evaluation of implementation options and workflow capabilities, the introduction of a 3D notation, and the development of a new 3D modeling environment. On this basis, a comprehensibility study of the language was conducted. Thereby, we show how modeling languages for augmented reality can be evolved towards a maturity level suitable for empirical evaluations.

There is still a lack of approaches to easily help users cope with the complex and challenging tasks related to Internet of Things (IoT) application development. The absence of standardized procedures and the complexity and heterogeneity of the IoT landscape are perceived as the main challenges. To address the complexity of IoT application development, Model-Driven Development (MDD) has emerged as an effective technique. By means of a Systematic Literature Review (SLR), we provide an overview of the current state of research in MDD for IoT applications. It shows that current approaches often neglect the role of organizational factors. This paper presents a method for MDD of IoT applications that considers both the stated challenges and organizational integration. The method includes a domain-specific modeling language (DSML) and several functionalities that assist in the modeling and development processes. This eliminates the necessity for any particular IT expertise at the application level. An industrial use case in the field of air conditioning facilities where the method has been implemented is described. Requirements for the methodological and technical support for IoT development were derived from a Small and Medium-Sized Enterprise (SME) during the development process.

A key aspect in creating models of production systems with the use of model-based systems engineering (MBSE) lies in the description of system functions. These functions should be described in a clear and standardized manner. The VDI/VDE 3682 standard for Formalised Process Description (FPD) provides a simple and easily understandable representation of processes. These processes can be conceptualized as functions within the system model, making the FPD particularly well-suited for the standardized representation of the required functions. Hence, this contribution focuses on the development of a domain-specific modeling language (DSML) that facilitates the integration of VDI/VDE 3682 into the Systems modeling language (SysML). The presented approach not only extends classical SysML with domain-specific requirements but also facilitates model verification through constraints modeled in Object Constraint language (OCL). Additionally, it enables automatic serialization of process descriptions into the Extensible Markup language (XML) using the Velocity Template language (VTL). This serialization enables the use of process modeling in applications outside of MBSE. The approach was validated using an collar screwing use case in the major component assembly in aircraft production.

Context modeling for the Adaption of Mobile Business Processes - An Empirical Usability Evaluation

Nowadays, the Internet of Things (IoT) and mobile devices are ubiquitous. Both, the IoT and mobile devices contain sensors and thus can provide data about the device's environment. The sensor data can be used to infer the current context. However, for this purpose, the sensor data have to be aggregated. In this aggregation process, several different sensors and data provided by other sources, such as databases, can be used. In order to facilitate this, the paper presents a modeling language for context modeling based on sensors. Moreover, a detailed usability evaluation of the presented context modeling language is shown. This evaluation is based on three hypotheses regarding learnability, time expenditure and effectiveness. An experiment involving an experimental group and a control group was conducted to test these three hypotheses, and the results were interpreted.

modeling and evaluating the behavior of the medium access control (MAC) protocols of wireless body area networks (WBANs) through the model-checker toolset UPPAAL-SMC necessitate a certain level of expertise. The thing that is not available for many MAC protocol designers. To facilitate the use of UPPAAL-SMC, we propose to define a model-driven engineering (MDE) approach that uses a modeling method (MM) as a start and the UPPAAL-SMC as a target and back. In this paper, we use the ADOxx platform to define the domain-specific modeling language (DSML) of WBAN that is presented through the name WBAN modeling language (WBAN-ML) to model the behavior of the WBANs MAC protocols. The prototype implementation result of the WBAN-ML is presented in this paper.

Digital Twin (DT) is a concept that has become increasingly relevant in recent years. The basic idea is to connect (physical) facilities or devices with digital representations to monitor, manipulate and predict their behavior in real-time. This work presents a modeling approach supporting DT engineering for air conditioning facilities. We describe the architecture of our system for developing digital representations of physically existing facilities in an industrial use case. The paper focuses on (a) the developed modeling tool, (b) the cloud service configuration, and (c) data analysis that enables energy optimizations.

Software development required for constructing multi-agent systems (MAS) usually becomes challenging and time-consuming due to the properties of autonomy, distributedness, and openness of these systems in addition to the complicated nature of internal agent behaviors and agent interactions. To facilitate MAS development, the researchers propose various domain-specific modeling languages (DSMLs) by enriching MAS metamodels with a defined syntax and semantics. Although the descriptions of these languages are given in the related studies with the examples of their use, unfortunately, many are not evaluated in terms of either the usability (being hard to learn, understand and use) or the quality of the generated artifacts. Hence, in this paper, we introduce an evaluation framework, called AgentDSM-Eval, with its supporting tool which can be used to evaluate MAS DSMLs systematically according to various quantitative and qualitative aspects of agent software development. The empirical evaluation, presented by the AgentDSM-Eval framework, was successfully applied for one of the well-known MAS DSMLs. The assessment showed that both MAS domain coverage of DSMLs and the agent developers? adoption of modeling elements can be determined with this framework. Moreover, the tool?s quantitative results can assess MAS DSML?s performance on the development time and throughput. AgentDSMEval also enables the qualitative assessment of MAS DSML features according to novel quality characteristics and measures, which it defines specifically for the MAS domain.

The design of simulation studies for HPC is a complex and time-consuming activity, especially when developing multiphysics designs of experiments. Using integrated environments limits the simulation study management efficiency, interoperability, and traceability in a multi-user context. This paper presents the Augias toolkit, a collaborative approach to managing HPC data and processes which addresses these issues by providing complete and neutral modeling of the simulation domain and a service layer end users can extend directly. The Augias metamodels and services are detailed in addition to the technology stack required to implement its principles and architecture. In conclusion, we present the results of an empirical evaluation study confronting the Augias SDK with three other solutions and scoring them through a canonical use case. © 2023 IEEE.

A Layered Reference Architecture for Metamodels to Tailor Quality modeling and Analysis

Nearly all facets of our everyday life strongly depend on software-intensive systems. Besides correctness, highly relevant quality properties of these systems include performance, as directly perceived by the user, and maintainability, as an important decision factor for evolution. These quality properties strongly depend on architectural design decisions. Hence, to ensure high quality, research and practice is interested in approaches to analyze the system architecture for quality properties. Therefore, models of the system architecture are created and used for analysis. Many different languages (often defined by metamodels) exist to model the systems and reason on their quality. Such languages are mostly specific to quality properties, tools or development paradigms. Unfortunately, the creation of a specific model for any quality property of interest and any different tool used is simply infeasible. Current metamodels for quality modeling and analysis are often not designed to be extensible and reusable. Experience from generalizing and extending metamodels result in hard to evolve and overly complex metamodels. A systematic way of creating, extending and reusing metamodels for quality modeling and analysis, or parts of them, does not exist yet. When comparing metamodels for different quality properties, however, substantial parts show quite similar language features. This leads to our approach to define the first reference architecture for metamodels for quality modeling and analysis. A reference architecture in software engineering provides a general architecture for a given application domain. In this paper, we investigate the applicability of modularization concepts from object-oriented design and the idea of a reference architecture to metamodels for quality modeling and analysis to systematically create, extend and reuse metamodel parts. Public-transit systems face a number of operational challenges: (a) changing ridership patterns requiring optimization of fixed line services, (b) optimizing vehicle-to-trip assignments to reduce maintenance and operation codes, and (c) ensuring equitable and fair coverage to areas with low ridership. Optimizing these objectives presents a hard computational problem due to the size and complexity of the decision space. State-of-the-art methods formulate these problems as variants of the vehicle routing problem and use data-driven heuristics for optimizing the procedures. However, the evaluation and training of these algorithms require large datasets that provide realistic coverage of various operational uncertainties. This paper presents a dynamic simulation platform, called TRANSIT-GYM, that can bridge this gap by providing the ability to simulate scenarios, focusing on variation of demand models, variations of route networks, and variations of vehicle-to-trip assignments. The central contribution of this work is a domain-specific language and associated experimentation tool-chain and infrastructure to enable subject-matter experts to intuitively specify, simulate, and analyze large-scale transit scenarios and their parametric variations. Of particular significance is an integrated microscopic energy consumption model that also helps to analyze the energy cost of various transit decisions made by the transportation agency of a city.
