An approach was proposed to specify the C4ISR capability of domain-specific modeling *** confine the domain modeling within a standard architecture framework,formally a C4ISR capability meta-ontology was defined according to the meta-model of DoD Architecture *** meta-ontology is used for extending UML Profile so that the domain experts can model the C4ISR domains using the C4ISR capability meta-concepts to define a domain-specific modeling *** domain models can be then checked to guarantee the consistency and completeness through converting the UML models into the Description Logic ontology and making use of inference engine Pellet to verify the ontology.

Reconfigurable architectures such as FPGAs are flexible alternatives to DSPs or ASICs used in mobile devices for which energy is a key performance metric. Reconfigurable architectures offer several design parameters such as operating frequency, precision, amount of memory, degree of parallelism, etc. These parameters define a large design space that must be explored to find energy-efficient solutions. It is also challenging to predict the energy variation at the early design phases when a design is modified at algorithm level. Efficient traversal of such a large design space requires high-level modeling to facilitate rapidestimation of system-wide energy. However, FPGAs do not exhibit a high-level structure like, for example, a RISC processor for which high-level as well as low-level energy models are available. To address this scenario, we propose a domain-specific modeling technique for energy-efficient kernel design that exploits the knowledge of the algorithm and the target architecture family for a given kernel to develop a high-level model. This model captures architecture and algorithm features, parameters affecting energy performance, and power estimation functions based on these parameters. A system-wide energy function is derived based on the power functions and cycle specific power state of each building block of the architecture. This model is used to understand the impact of various parameters on system-wide energy and can be a basis for the design of energy-efficient algorithms. Our high-level model is used to quickly obtain fairly accurate estimate of the system-wide energy dissipation of data paths configured using FPGAs. We demonstrate our modeling methodology by applying it to four domains.

domain-specific languages (DSLs) provide abstractions and notations for better understanding and easier modeling of applications in a special domain. Current shortcomings of DSLs include learning curve and formal semantics. This paper reports on a framework that allows the use of ontology technologies to describe and reason on DSLs. The formal semantics of OWL together with reasoning services allows for addressing constraint definition, progressive evaluation, suggestions, and debugging. The approach integrates existing metamodels and concrete syntaxes in a new technical space. A scenario in which domain models for network devices are created illustrates the framework.

A systematic mapping study on best practices for domain-specific modeling

Model-driven software development comes in different styles. While standard-based approaches leverage existing language standards (e.g., UML), tooling, and development processes, domain-specific modeling (DSM) requires languages and tool support to be created prior to the actual software development. The design, implementation, and testing of languages and tool support require a wide spectrum of methods and techniques which introduce complexity and new challenges. To tackle these DSM-specific challenges, best practices have been collected from various application domains and published in literature to guide the development and application of DSM solutions. It is the goal of this paper to identify studies reporting best practices on domain-specific modeling. Moreover, a systematic and comprehensive compilation of best practices should act as a starting point to identify literature that facilitates industrial adoption of DSM. To search for literature and classify identified studies, we conduct a systematic mapping study (SMS). Furthermore, we perform an in-depth analysis of the identified studies to answer how practices overlap, complement, or contradict each other. The systematic search resulted in 21 studies reporting 321 best practices. From these 321 practices, we compiled 192 unique best practices. We found that the DSM community created a substantial corpus of best practices for DSM. The large majority of practices (75%) are only reported once. The top best practices by number of reports contain only practices that are reported at least four times. However, the frequency of reports does not necessarily imply a high importance of practice, as the application of practices is always context specific.

Effective development of automation systems through domain-specific modeling in a small enterprise context

High development and maintenance costs and a high error rate are the major problems in the development of automation systems, which are mainly caused by bad communication and inefficient reuse methods. To overcome these problems, we propose a more systematic reuse approach. Though systematic reuse approaches such as software product lines are appealing, they tend to involve rather burdensome development and management processes. This paper focuses on small enterprises. Since such companies are often unable to perform a "big bang" adoption of the software product line, we suggest an incremental, more lightweight process to transition from single-system development to software product line development. Besides the components of the transition process, this paper discusses tool selection, DSL technology, stakeholder communication support, and business considerations. Although based on problems from the automation system domain, we believe the approach may be general enough to be applicable in other domains as well. The approach has proven successful in two case studies. First, we applied it to a research project for the automation of a logistics lab model, and in the second case (a real-life industry case), we investigated the approaches suitability for fish farm automation systems. Several metrics were collected throughout the evolution of each case, and this paper presents the data for single system development, clone&own and software product line development. The results and observable effects are compared, discussed, and finally summarized in a list of lessons learned.

Automating the construction of domain-specific modeling languages for object-oriented frameworks

The extension of frameworks with domain-specific modeling languages (DSML) has proved to be an effective way of improving the productivity in software product-line engineering. However, developing and evolving a DSML is typically a difficult and time-consuming task because it requires to develop and maintain a code generator, which transforms application models into framework-based code. In this paper, we propose a new approach for extending object-oriented frameworks that aims to alleviate this problem. The approach is based on developing an additional aspect-oriented layer that encodes a DSML for building framework-based applications, eliminating the need of implementing a code generator. We further show how a language workbench is capable of automating the construction of DSMLs using the proposed layer. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

A domain-specific modeling approach supporting tool-chain development with Bayesian network models

Constructing and evaluating a comprehensive tool-chain with commercial off-the-shelf and proprietary tools for the deployment of model-based systems engineering (MBSE) is a challenging and complex task. specifically, the lack of early assessment during tool-chain development has led to increased research and development costs when unexpected features are developed or poor decisions are made. In this paper, a domain-specific modeling (DSM) approach is proposed to support decision-makings during tool-chain design and to facilitate quantitative assessment of tool-chain features at early-phases. Using this approach, different views of tool-chains are first formalized under a DSM framework. Then the DSM models are transformed to Bayesian network models for supporting the quantitative assessment of related tools in order to analyze the whole tool-chains' features. In the case study, the approach is verified by comparing two MBSE tool-chains for an auto-braking system design. The results indicate that the DSM approach enhances the understanding of tool-chain concepts, promotes the efficiency of MBSE tool-chain development, and verifies the tool-chain in early development phases using a quantitative approach.

Why the use of domain-specific modeling in airworthy software requires new methods and how these might look like? (extended version)

The use of domain-specific modeling (DSM) in safety-critical avionics is rare, even though the ever-increasing complexity of avionics systems makes the use of DSM reasonable. DSM shows its advantage especially in capturing complex systems, data and relationships. The reason for the limited use in the (safety-critical) avionics area is mainly due to the high demands on the safety of software and systems. Everything that is to be used in flight operations and development must undergo a rigorous and complex certification process. Any data used in operations must be verified. A reduction of this effort can be achieved using qualified tools. A qualified tool can either replace or support certification activities. This article elaborates different use cases of how DSM could be used in relation to airworthy software. For those use cases, we review the effort of a certification and retrieve the major shortcomings and showstoppers of available frameworks, e.g. infeasible qualification of DSM runtimes and the unavailability of qualification artifacts. Finally, we elaborate possible ways of mitigation and show the concept and first results of a new DSM framework for airworthy applications, called domainES. domainES covers deterministic meta-modeling up to graph-based model transformations and verified visual editing. The concept of domainES and a first functional prototype are presented that indicate that the shortcomings can be mitigated.

Developing a learning design using IMS Learning Design (LD) is difficult for average practitioners because a high overhead of pedagogical knowledge and technical knowledge is required. Through using peer assessment as an exemplary pedagogy, this paper presents a domain-specific modeling (DSM) approach to a new generation of LD authoring tools, for enabling practitioners to create learning designs. Adopting a DSM approach, on the one hand, pedagogic experts develop a pedagogy-specific modeling language, in which notations are directly chosen from the concepts and rules used to describe pedagogic approaches. On the other hand, technical experts develop transformation algorithms, which will map the models represented in the pedagogy-specific modeling language into machine-interpretable code represented in LD. This technical approach to a new generation of LD authoring tools has been illustrated through presenting the whole procedure of the development of a peer assessment authoring tool.

To tackle these DSM-specific challenges, best practices have been collected from various application domains and published in literature to guide the development and application of DSM solutions. This work explores existing best practices by conducting a systematic mapping study. We identify and classify studies reporting practical guidance on domain-specific modeling and present best practices from literature. Moreover, we discuss how best practices overlap, complement, or contradict each other. From a total of 309 best practices in 19 papers, we compiled 189 unique best practices. The systematic and comprehensive compilation of best practices is intended to facilitate industrial adoption of DSM in various domains.
