domain-specific modeling languages (DSMLs) increasingly gain attention in the field of Conceptual modeling as they target a particular problem in a delineated application domain by using concepts that are tailored to end-users. As such, DSMLs provide a flexible approach that can be used in different application domains. To realize their potential, the graphical notation of a DSML must be aligned with the users' knowledge and perceptions. In particular, an intuitively understandable DSML notation is important to facilitate communication with the end-users. Therefore, we propose a technique for composing an initial DSML notation by reusing icons. This technique is applied in the context of the Process-Goal Alignment (PGA) business modeling technique. Furthermore, we empirically evaluate the proposed technique by an experiment with 85 business users, in which we compare the intuitiveness of the newly developed and existing PGA notations. The results show that the semantic transparency of the newly developed notation is significantly higher than the existing PGA notations. More specifically, the composition technique based on the reuse of icons enables to derive the meaning of DSML concepts correctly.

modeling smart service systems is a challenging task. Numerous actors with a diverse set of resources form complex systems in which smart products act as boundary objects. In their development, smart service systems combine several disciplines such as service, software, and mechanical engineering with their respective modeling languages and approaches. Despite the increasing importance of smart service systems, there are few practical ways to specify their architecture from both a business and a technical perspective. The lack of conceptual guidance hinders an efficient and meaningful design process in which service and smart product development are isolated. To address this gap, I propose the domain-specific modeling language ServML as an extension of the well-established Systems modeling language (SysML) that focuses on complex smart service systems. The application of ServML is demonstrated in a real-world online case. My results support researchers and practitioners alike in designing industrial smart service systems.

DSML4DT: A domain-specific modeling language for device tree software

Device trees (DTs) provide description of devices and peripherals inside an embedded system with node specifications. However, developers mostly encounter difficulties in creating DT applications due to DT syntax different from the well-known general purpose programming languages. Moreover, both development and configuration of DT software components regarding different microprocessor architectures can be very hard and time-consuming for many embedded system developers. In order to eliminate these difficulties, we introduce a domain-specific modeling language, called DSML4DT, which provides the model-driven development (MDD) of DT software for the wide range of processor families. The evaluation of using DSML4DT was performed inside a company producing intelligent transportation systems. The comparative evaluation results showed that approximately 76 % of DT structures can be obtained automatically only through modeling with DSML4DT. Comparing with the software development process currently followed in the company, the new MOD process reduced the time elapsed for implementing a DT software to half. Finally, feedbacks from the developers confirmed that they adopted the language particularly in terms of functional suitability, compatibility and reusability. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. Augmented reality (AR) is a technology that overlays digital information onto real-world objects using devices like smartphones, tablets, or head-mounted displays to enrich human comprehension and interaction with the physical environment. The creation of AR software applications requires today advanced coding skills, particularly when aiming to realize complex, multifaceted scenarios. As an alternative, we propose a domain-specific visual modeling language for designing AR scenarios, enabling users to define augmentations and AR workflows graphically. The language has been implemented on the ADOxx metamodeling platform, together with a software engine for running the AR applications using the W3C WebXR Device API for web-based augmented reality. The language and the AR application are demonstrated through a furniture assembly use case. In an initial evaluation, we show, via a comprehensive feature comparison, that the proposed language exhibits a more extensive coverage of AR concepts compared to preceding model-based approaches.

Clinical scores are a widely discussed topic in health as part of modern clinical practice. In general, these tools predict clinical outcomes, perform risk stratification, aid in clinical decision making, assess disease severity or assist diagnosis. However, the problem is that clinical scores data are traditionally obtained manually, which can lead to incorrect data and result. In addition, by collecting biological/health data in real time from humans, the current mobile health (mHealth) solutions that computationally solve that problem are limited because those systems are developed considering the specificities of a single clinical score. This work is part of the MDD4ClinicalScores project that addresses the productivity in developing mHealth solutions for clinical scores through the use of Model Driven Development concepts. This paper focus in describing DSML4ClinicalScore, a high-level domain-specific modeling language that uses the Ecore metamodel to describe a clinical score specification. To propose the DSML4ClinicalScore we analysed 89 clinical scores to define the artifacts of this proposed Metamodel. In the end, a practical case study using this DSML is provided to validate the DSML4ClinicalScore Metamodel, and to show how to use the proposal in a clinical situation scenario.

DSML4CP: A domain-specific modeling language for Concurrent Programming

Nowadays, concurrent programs are an inevitable part of many software applications. They can increase the computation performance of the applications by parallelizing their computations. One of the approaches to realize the concurrency is using multi thread programming. However, these systems are structurally complex considering the control of the parallelism (such as thread synchronization and resource control) and also considering the interaction between their components. So, the design of these systems can be difficult and their implementation can be error-prone especially when the addressed system is big and complex. On the other hand, a domain-specific modeling language (DSML) is one of the Model Driven Development (MDD) approaches which tackles this problem. Since DSMLs provide a higher abstraction level, they can lead to reduce the complexities of the concurrent programs. With increasing the abstraction level and generating the artifacts automatically, the performance of developing the software (both in design and implementation phases) is increased, and the efficiency is raised by reducing the probability of occurring errors. Thus, in this paper, a DSML is proposed for concurrent programs, called DSML4CP, to work in a higher level of abstraction than code level. To this end, the concepts of concurrent programs and their relationships are presented in a metamodel. The proposed metamodel provides a context for defining abstract syntax, and concrete syntax of the DSML4CP. This new language is supported by a graphical modeling tool which can visualize different instance models for domain problems. In order to clarify the expressions of the language;the static semantic controls are realized in the form of constraints. Finally, the architectural code generation is fulfilled via model transformation rules using the templates of the concurrent programs. The study of Multiagent Systems (MASs) focuses on those systems in which many intelligent agents interact with each other. The agents are considered to be autonomous entities which contain intelligence that serves for solving their selfish or common problems, and to achieve certain goals. However, the autonomous, responsive, and proactive natures of agents make the development of agent-based software systems more complex than other software systems. Furthermore, the design and implementation of a MAS may become even more complex and difficult to implement when considering new requirements and interactions for new agent environments like the Semantic Web. We believe that both domain-specific modeling and the use of a domain-specific modeling language (DSML) may provide the required abstraction, and hence support a more fruitful methodology for the development of MASs. In this paper, we first introduce a DSML for MASs called SEA_ML with both its syntax and semantics definitions and then show how the language and its graphical tools can be used during model-driven development of real MASs. In addition to the classical viewpoints of a MAS, the proposed DSML includes new viewpoints which specifically support the development of software agents working within the Semantic Web environment. The methodology proposed for the MAS development based on SEA_ML is also discussed including its example application on the development of an agent-based stock exchange system. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. In this paper, we refine and extend an earlier language design to introduce a domain-specific modeling language (DSML) for internal control modeling as an extension to an enterprise modeling method. The language is aimed at supporting the assessment of a firm's internal control system through the use of conceptual models of internalcontrols. In the paper, we report on the design of the modeling language, on its integration with the enterprise modeling method, present the language specification, and discuss language applications in the context of the assessment of an internal control system. Driven by our technologically advanced workplaces and the surge in demand for proficiency in the computing disciplines, it is becoming imperative to provide computational thinking (CT) opportunities to all students. One approach for making computing accessible and relevant to learning and problem-solving in K-12 environments is to integrate it with existing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) curricula. However, novice student learners may face several difficulties in trying to learn STEM and computing concepts simultaneously. To address some of these difficulties, we present a systematic approach to learning STEM and CT by designing and developingdomain-specific modeling languages(DSMLs) to aid students in their model building and problem-solving processes. The paper discusses a theoretical framework and the design principles for developing DSMLs, which is implemented as a four-step process. We apply the four-step process in three domains: Physics, Marine Biology, and Earth Science to demonstrate its generality, and then perform case studies to show how the DSMLs impact student learning and model building. We conclude with a discussion of our findings and then present directions for future work.

METAMORPH: formalization of domain-specific conceptual modeling methods-an evaluative case study, juxtaposition and empirical assessment

Models have evolved from mere pictures supporting human understanding and communication to sophisticated knowledge structures processable by machines and establish value through their processing capabilities. This entails an inevitable need for computer-understandable modeling languages and causes formalization to be a crucial part in the lifecycle of engineering a modeling method. An appropriate formalism must be a means for providing a structural definition to enable a theoretical investigation of conceptual modeling languages and a unique, unambiguous way of specifying the syntax and semantics of an arbitrary modeling language. For this purpose, it must be generic and open to capturing any domain and any functionality. This paper provides a pervasive description of the formalism METAMORPH based on logic and model theory-an approach fulfilling the requirements above for modeling method engineering. The evaluation of the formalism is presented following three streams of work: First, two evaluative case studies illustrate the applicability of METAMORPH formalism concept by concept on the modeling language PROVIS from the domain of stochastic education and the well-known Entity-Relationship language. PROVIS as well as ER comprise only a few objects and relation types but with high interconnection and expressive power and are therefore considered interesting specimens for formalization. Second, a comprehensive juxtaposition of METAMORPH to three other formalization approaches based on different foundational theories is outlined concept by concept to underpin the formalism design. Third, an empirical evaluation has been performed, assessing the usability and adequacy of the formalism within a classroom assessment. The results allow for conclusions on the completeness, intuitiveness, and complexity as well as on interdependencies with engineers' skills.
