This contribution discusses problems of existing gamified learning platforms as a result of an analysis and reveals a research gap that is addressed using a domain-specific modeling (DSM) approach. Foundations of the DSM approach are described and our vision to use it for improving the creation, adaptability, and extensibility of platforms as well as the exchange of promising gamified learning concepts. Early results are presented and steps ahead are shown.

Complex event processing (CEP) is a cutting-edge technology that allows the analysis and correlation of large volumes of data with the aim of detecting complex and meaningful events through the use of event patterns, as well as permitting the inference of valuable knowledge for end users. Despite the great advantages that CEP can bring to expert or intelligent business systems, it poses a substantial challenge to their users, who are business experts but do not have the necessary knowledge and experience using this technology. The main problem these users have to face is precisely hand-writing the code for event pattern definition, which requires them to implement the conditions to be met to detect relevant situations for the domain in question by using a particular event processing language (EPL). In order to respond to this need, in this paper we propose both a graphical domain-specific modeling language (DSML) for facilitating CEP domain definitions by domain experts, and a graphical DSML for event pattern definition by non-technological users. The proposed languages provide high expressiveness and flexibility and are independent of event patterns and actions' implementation code. This way, domain experts can define the relevant event types and patterns within their business domain, without having to be experts on EPL programming, nor on other complicated computer science technological issues, beyond an understandable and intuitive graphical definition. Furthermore, with these DSMLs, users will also be able to define the actions to be automatically taken once a pattern is detected in the system. Further benefits of these DSMLs are evaluated and discussed in depth in this paper. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Problem Based Learning (PBL) is proposed as one of the most well-known alternatives to traditional lectures in modeling engineering graduates to become independent workers, critical thinkers, problem solver, lifelong learners, and team worker. In the past decades much has been reported about how to support online PBL, but much less attention has been given to support assessment in an online PBL. Recently, the authors of this paper have developed a domain-specific modeling language approach and an associated web-based PBL application to support the development and delivery of online PBL modules in a cost-effective and flexible manner. In this paper, the authors emphasize to support peer assessment in an online PBL. Through using a peer assessment example, the authors present how to support teachers, who may not have a comprehensive technical knowledge, to specify a peer assessment process as a segment of a PBL script, a graphical representation of a PBL strategy. Then the PBL application can transform a PBL script that including the peer assessment into a formal model represented in an international e-learning technical standard IMS-Learning Design (IMS-LD). Finally, such a formal model can be executed in any IMS-LD compatible run-time environment. We have demonstrated the technical feasibility of this approach through specifying and transforming the example peer assessment script.

Students use their own mobile devices like laptops, smartphones and tablets to work and study anywhere and anytime. Consequently, there is a high interest in using one's own mobile devices in the educational context. This presents a chance as well as a challenge for educators, who can now make use of mobile learning for supplying their students with tailored didactical content that is accessible anywhere and anytime. Therefore, in our work, we focus on presenting educational content using serious games. In order to allow educators without technical knowledge to create custom serious games, we propose a model-driven visual programming framework. In this paper, we present our framework, which consists of GLiSMo-a domain-specific modeling language-and the visual programming environment for serious games (VIPEr) that allows educators to use their didactical knowledge with a point and click graphical editor to create their own serious games.

The development and evolution of an advanced modeling environment for a domain-specific modeling language (DSML) is a tedious task, which becomes recurrent with the increasing number of DSMLs involved in the development and management of complex software-intensive systems. Recent efforts in language workbenches result in advanced frameworks that automatically provide syntactic tooling such as advanced editors. However, defining the execution semantics of languages and their tooling remains mostly hand crafted. Similarly to editors that share code completion or syntax highlighting, the development of advanced debuggers, animators, and others execution analysis tools shares common facilities, which should be reused among various DSMLs. In this tool demonstration paper, we present the execution framework offered by the GEMOC studio, an Eclipse-based language and modeling workbench. The framework provides a generic interface to plug in different execution engines associated to their specific metalanguages used to define the discrete-event operational semantics of DSMLs. It also integrates generic runtime services that are shared among the approaches used to implement the execution semantics, such as graphical animation or omniscient debugging.

Information technology (IT) security design and management are a major concern and substantial challenge for IT management. Today's highly complex business and technological environments and the need to effectively communicate and justify IT security requirements and controls demand methodical support. The modeling method presented in this paper addresses this demand. The method is based on the assumption that enriched enterprise models integrating technological, business, organizational and strategic aspects provide an effective foundation for developing and managing IT security systems and facilitating communication and understanding between stakeholders. The proposed modeling method for designing and managing IT security in organizations accounts for different perspectives and is based on multi-perspective enterprise modeling. The core components of the method, based on analysis of requirements at different levels of abstraction, are: modeling language concepts specifically designed to address security issues, process models that guide the use of the resulting language, and a modeling environment. The method facilitates elaborate representations of the various aspects of IT security at different levels of abstraction and covers the entire lifecycle of IT security systems. It not only supports multi-perspective requirement analysis and design but also enables monitoring and analysis of IT security at runtime. The presented artifact is evaluated with recourse to a research method that enables the configuration of multi-criteria justification procedures.

Conceptual models of goal systems promise to provide an apt basis for planning, analyzing, monitoring, and (re-)considering goals as part of management processes in the organization. But although a great deal of conceptual goal modeling languages are available, these take only limited account of the organizational dimension of goals, including authorization rights, responsibilities, resources, and, in particular, related decision processes. This paper presents a goal modeling language which is integrated with a method for multi-perspective enterprise modeling, such that context-enriched models of goal systems can be constructed. Aside from organizational aspects, particular emphasis is placed on conceptualizations that clearly distinguish different (meta) levels of abstraction.

Software-Defined Networking (SDN) enables applications running on its control plane. The Northbound API allows programmers to develop SDN applications for a number of policy-based network management tasks. However, there is still a clear need for supporting the development of controller-agnostic modeled applications. In this paper, we show how the Model-Driven Networking (MDN), a framework composed of CASE tool and domain-specific modeling language (DSML), can be a feasible solution to create applications independent from controllers and to enable proper verification of SDN applications. Our evaluation demonstrates that MDN framework is viable for using in real scenarios and independent from SDN controllers. Moreover, our performance tests show that: (i) MDN's code generation is two times faster than other approaches;and (ii) it can validate several constraints and complex topologies at millisecond-timescale.

In this paper, we present our approach which aims at improving the mechanism of constructing language semantics over the interoperability of domain-specific modeling languages (DSMLs) developed for Multi-agent Systems (MAS) and hence providing a more efficient way of extension for the executability of modeled agent systems on various underlying agent platforms. Differentiating from the existing MAS DSML studies, our proposal is based on determining entity mappings and building horizontal model transformations between the metamodels of MAS DSMLs which are in the same abstraction level. The applicability of the approach is demonstrated in the paper by constructing horizontal transformations between two full-fledged agent DSMLs, called SEA_ML and DSML4MAS. Use of these transformations has enabled SEA_ML instance models now to be executable on new agent platforms and that feature has been provided with less effort comparing with the implementation of needed transformations between SEA_ML and those new agent platforms from scratch.
