DARB: A dynamic architecture for Data Replica Balancing

Distributed file systems, such as HDFS, are designed to support applications that handle large volumes of data. Data replication, which is at the core of the HDFS storage model, is essential for fault tolerance and performance. As new data are loaded into the system, the distribution of data blocks replicated among the nodes may become dissimilar affecting replica balancing and data locality. The HDFS Balancer is the official solution for redistributing the data already stored in the cluster. However, it overlooks the specific needs of the applications during data rearrangement and requires manual intervention by system administrators-a dependency that is often inadequate and inefficient. To address these limitations, this work presents DARB, a dynamic architecture for Replica Balancing that combines reactive and proactive strategies. The former uses the Prioritized Replica Balancing Policy to customize the replica balancing through configurable priorities. The latter consists of an event-driven strategy that makes the overall balancing process in HDFS transparent. DARB comprises modular components and a metrics observation model that identifies and determines when corrective actions should be taken. It also automatically triggers the HDFS Balancer based on standardized trigger events. The evaluation results reinforce that the proposed solution removes the need for manual configuration and execution while actively acting to keep the cluster balanced, taking into account performance, reliability, and data availability perspectives. Thus, DARB offers a sophisticated and specialized balancing solution that makes the balancing process seamless and flexible, introducing to the HDFS the concept of context-aware replica balancing.

This article proposes a novel method to optimise the dynamic architecture Neural Network (DAN2) adapted for a multi-task learning problem. The multi-task learning neural network adopts a multi-head and serial architecture with DAN2 layers acting as the basic subroutine. Adopting a dynamic architecture, the layers are added consecutively starting from a minimal initial structure. The optimisation method adopts an iterative heuristic scheme that sequentially optimises the shared layers and the task-specific layers until the solver converges to a small tolerance. Application of the method has demonstrated the applicability of the algorithm to simulated datasets. Comparable results to Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) have been obtained in terms of accuracy and speed.

This paper elaborates on basic software techniques for distributing the hardware resource among user programs computed by a multicomputer system with a dynamic architecture. The system can switch the hardware resources into the minimal sized computers required for computations and initiate the unused resources into execution of additional program streams. Thus it maximizes the number of parallel program streams computed by the same set of resources.

In this paper, we propose a continual learning method based on node-importance evaluation and a dynamic architecture model. Our method determines the important nodes according to the value of Laplace operator of each node. Due to the anisotropy of the important nodes, the sparse sub-networks for the specific task can be constructed by freezing the weights of the important nodes and splitting them with unimportant nodes to reduce catastrophic forgetting. Then we add new nodes in networks to prevent existing nodes from being exhausted after continuously learning many new tasks, and to lessen the negative transfer effects. We have evaluated our method on CIFAR-10, CIFAR-100, MNIST, Fashion-MNIST and CUB200 datasets and it achieves superior results when compared to other traditional methods.

This paper considers the organization of certain multicomputer systems with a particular type of dynamic architecture. The system allows one to reconfigure via software available hardware resources (widths of processors, memories, and I/O units), forming computers with different word sizes. A multicomputer system is formed from identical dynamic computer groups. Each group may assume a variety of architectural states which are distinct from each other by the number and sizes of concurrent computers. To construct one dynamic computer group, one uses a universal building module, an 8-bit microprocessor on an LSI chip, and standard memory units. This paper considers basic principles of dynamic computer group implementation: organization of parallel (for words) and serial (for instructions) exchange between primary memory and processor, automatic variation of the time intervals assigned for operations which are executed in differently sized computers, formation of the processor with variable word size, switching from one architectural state to another, scheduling of the memory, and task synchronization. Nonlinear artificial neural network models are very attractive for modeling and forecasting time series. The use of such models in these types of applications is motivated by experimental results that show a high capacity of approximation for functions with high accuracy. However, many researchers have used feedforward and/or backpropagation models for time series predictions. In this paper, a model is applied for neural networks with the dynamic architecture proposed by Ghiassi and Saidane (2005), known as the DAN2 model. The results of DAN2 are compared with auto-regressive integrated mobile average (ARIMA) models. As the main result of the paper, we propose a hybrid model with dynamic architecture (HAD) based on combinations of individual forecasts from the DAN2 and ARIMA models with the aim of obtaining more precise forecasts for poorly behaved time series. The results suggest that for this kind of series, the HAD hybrid model outperforms the individual DAN2 and ARIMA models.

architecture description languages (ADL), many of them well-established, are popular in the systems and software engineering fields. They all exhibit different strengths, weaknesses, and specializations. Many of them are targeting static architectures with some limited support for dynamic changes of the architecture during run-time. The proposed architecture Description Language in this paper targets the definition of architectures for system of systems (SoS) that can allow for dynamic changes in each system through manipulation of components during run-time and, therefore, dynamic reconfiguration. The existing modeling tools do not target dynamic reconfiguration of systems and, especially system of systems and could be used through possible extensions or annexes. Examples of such existing languages are SysML and AADL. These capabilities allow for improved system maintenance and adaptive behavior at run-time. The main contribution of this work is achieving these goals through the development of a new specialized language. dynADL and its environment have been developed using Antlr and C++ and have been tested for generating systems in POSIX environments. It is an architecture definition language that is extensible and flexible and has an experimental git repository with C++ source code for the implementation of the tools. The proposed tools allow for code generation of skeleton code for systems of systems that have dynamic behavior.

A method of designing packet-switching network of dynamic architecture based on artificial intelligence is discussed in detail. According to this method, the intelligent information about the user's requirements and network states is used to control the network architecture's exchange so that its information transmission efficiency is increased greatly. Some technical problems and experimental results concerning this dynamic-architecture packet-switching network (DAPSN) are examined. It is suggested that the design principle of DAPSN can be widely applied in many computer networks, for example, the MAN, WAN, LAN, (metropolitan, wide, and local area networks), andISDN (integrated services digital network).

dynamic architecture first appeared in 20th century in the field of architecture and have been seen under various names over time such as Transformable architecture, Responsive architecture, Adaptive architecture, Intelligent architecture and so on. Each of them are specialized on their abilities of responsiveness, transformation and intelligence in accordance with the economic, functional and energy requirements. The reason why dynamic architecture is developing fast is that it the follows the latest improvements in the field of electronics, structural engineering and computational sciences. In the light of the latest developments, the aim of this thesis is to propose a conceptual model of an inclusive and advanced dynamic architectural space, which has dynamic internal walls as interaction interface to strengthen human- building interactivity with intelligent behaviors. As the recent developments in artificial intelligence and structural engineering make advanced architectural environments possible, multi-agent dynamic systems can be used to control ambient intelligence of the space and deep learning algorithms can be used in interactive interface to communicate more interactively with users. With this proposal, a space can become more interactive by gaining the capabilities of dynamism and intelligent behavior, which can push the dynamic building term one step forward by improving human-building interactions and it can have its own charactheristics using what it senses and learns. For this purpose, the positive aspects of dynamic architectural terms, construction of dynamic structures and composition of intelligent behaviors of the space are the matters of discussion in this thesis.
