This paper advocates the study and use of visualization design patterns to improve development productivity and usage effectiveness in dynamic, analytical data visualization. Nine visualization design patterns are presented formally using the current de facto pattern description language. Organized in three categories (data, structural, and behavioral), these patterns summarize many common practices and techniques used in the process of dynamic, analytical data visualization. A relationship diagram is also introduced to illustrate the common relationships and uses of the patterns. Driven by the study of design patterns, a simple, yet powerful, architecture design for a dynamic, analytical data visualization library is proposed. The fundamental characteristics of the design are component-based, data centric, and layout-aided.

visualization of dynamic data from molecular dynamics simulations is crucial for understanding the functioning of molecules. Many existing visualization tools have mainly focused on supporting a single user working on a desktop computer. Technical advancements in browser features increase the potential for the development of web-based collaborative visualization tools. Although web-based molecular viewers already exist, their support for dynamic molecular data at interactive rates is lacking. To address this gap, we present an efficient web application for visualization of dynamic molecular data using WebGL that exploits HTML5 technologies like WebSockets and Web Workers. GPU-based ray casting techniques offer fast rendering times and produce images with higher visual quality. Efficient data encoding techniques are used to minimize the data transferred to the client;therefore saving bandwidth and improving the transfer times. We demonstrate the feasibility of visualizing large dynamic molecular data with more than one million atoms in the browser at interactive frame rates. Our approach allows scientists at arbitrary locations to concurrently visually analyze the same data. The interactive parameterization of the visualization can be shared among multiple clients, providing the basis for collaborative research. Moreover, the application can be employed for remote simulation monitoring on mobile devices. (C) 2016 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Motor-vehicle crashes contribute to a significant number of fatalities and injuries in the United States. To effectively extract the accident trend and decrease the death rate, government experts need to analyze the data of vehicle crashes to find out the major causes and come out with a comprehensive decision to reduce traffic crashes. Interactive data visualization is an important technique that allows people to get dynamic visual feedback and extract hidden information. In this project, we developed a dynamic data visualization system that employs JavaScript and data-Driven Documents (D3) to model the number of motor vehicle occupant fatalities in the United States in 2012 and 2014. Using this model, trends and patterns are extracted from the data with multiple variables considered, including age, sex, and impaired driving. The designed model is created with a HyperText Markup Language (HTML) structure and uses Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) for styling, which is able to switch between these variables and display various data information without reloading the visualization in the web browser. The developed platform can be used as a valuable tool to support the development and assessment of highway safety programs that tend to prevent road traffic accidents.

This paper proposes a conceptual model called compound brushing for modeling the brushing techniques used in dynamic data visualization. In this approach, brushing techniques are modeled as higraphs with five types of basic entities: data, selection, device, renderer, and transformation. Using this model, a flexible visual programming tool is designed not only to configure and control various common types of brushing techniques currently used in dynamic data visualization but also to investigate new brushing techniques. © 2004, SAGE Publications. This work presents the design of a virtual training platform. This platform is specifically designed for tasks requiring a balance between theoretical and embodied knowledge. Our use case aims at training paragliding pilots to various aspects of pendular flight. Complex dynamics, invisible risks, data scarce environment and a practice oriented task, makes paragliding a perfect ambassador for various challenging tasks. This design run aims at identifying a generic methodology for virtual training platform design. This work achieved through a partnership with the French Federation of Free Flight (FFVL) and the paragliding wing designer and producer Sup'Air. Our goal is to compete at ReVolution 2018 Laval Virtual and present an original, fun and pedagogic experience to the general public in order to validate the genericity of our methodology.
