Plant-Wide Supply-Demand Forecast and Optimization of Byproduct Gas System in Steel Plant

Considerable energy is consumed during steel manufacturing process. Byproduct gas emerges as secondary energy in the process; however, it is also an atmospheric pollution source if it is released into the air. Therefore, the optimal utilization of byproduct gas not only saves energy but also protects environment. To solve this issue, a fore- cast model of gas supply, gas demand and surplus gas in a steel plant was proposed. With the progress of energy conservation, the amount of surplus gas was very large. In a steel plant, the surplus gas was usually sent to boilers to generate steam. However, each boiler had an individual efficiency. So the optimization of the utilization of surplus gas in boilers was a key topic. A dynamic programming method was used to develop an optimal utilization strategy for surplus gas. Finally, a case study providing a sound confirmation was given.

Voluntary retirement and portfolio selection: dynamic programming approaches

I consider a continuous-time optimal consumption and portfolio selection problem with voluntary retirement. When the agent's utility of consumption and leisure are of Cobb-Douglas form, I use the dynamic programming method to derive the value function and optimal strategies in closed-form. These coincide with the solutions of Farhi and Panageas (2007)[7], who have solved the problem using a martingale method. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Active learning combining uncertainty and diversity for multi-class image classification

In computer vision and pattern recognition applications, there are usually a vast number of unlabelled data whereas the labelled data are very limited. Active learning is a kind of method that selects the most representative or informative examples for labelling and training;thus, the best prediction accuracy can be achieved. A novel active learning algorithm is proposed here based on one-versus-one strategy support vector machine (SVM) to solve multi-class image classification. A new uncertainty measure is proposed based on some binary SVM classifiers and some of the most uncertain examples are selected from SVM output. To ensure that the selected examples are diverse from each other, Gaussian kernel is adopted to measure the similarity between any two examples. From the previous selected examples, a batch of diverse and uncertain examples are selected by the dynamic programming method for labelling. The experimental results on two datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

The problem of routing movements on a finite system of sets with constraints in the form of antecedence (the generalized courier problem) is addressed. The specific feature of the problem is that the cost function for the movement from one set to another involves a dependence on a list of remaining jobs on visiting of the mentioned sets.

Influence of a CVT on the fuel consumption of a parallel medium-duty electric hybrid truck

Hybrid electric vehicles are being developed to reduce the pollutant emissions and the fossil-fuel consumption of transportation. Innovative technologies are inserted to improve the performance of hybrid vehicles, including trucks and buses. Thereby, trends towards gear shifting automation motivate the research on replacing a discrete conventional Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) with a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). Theoretically, such a transmission enables better operation points of the thermal engine, and therefore a reduction of its fuel consumption and emissions. However, the conventional (hydraulic actuated) CVT efficiency during quasi-stationary operation is typically lower than the efficiency of a classical discrete gearbox, which leads to higher fuel consumption. This paper is focused on the study of the interests of a CVT for a medium-duty Hybrid Electric Truck (HET). The complete model and control of CVT-based and AMT-based HET are described in a unified way using Energetic Macroscopic Representation (EMR). These models are transformed to backward-models to be computed by the dynamic programming method (DPM). Such a method leads to define the (off-line) optimal energy management strategies for a fair comparison of both hybrid trucks. For the studied driving cycle, the hybridization allows a fuel saving of 10% with an AMT and 3% with a CVT. The fuel consumption is higher for the CVT-based HET in comparison with the AMT-based HET due to the lowest efficiency of the CVT (85%) compared to the AMT (around 92%). However, future (on-demand) CVTs with an increased efficiency could be a solution of interest to reduce the fuel consumption of such applications. Study on the building zoning of regional energy planning based on a dynamic programming theory

Building zoning is crucial for regional energy planning. Appropriate building zoning can effectively optimize the peak load, daily load rate and load standard deviation of buildings. However, a clear quantitative standard for building zoning is currently lacking, and zoning methods based on minimum distance or load fluctuation are often employed, which often fail to achieve optimal zoning and energy-saving effects. To clarify building zoning in regional energy planning, this study proposes a dynamic programming approach and employs the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) to improve the zoning method. This is achieved by using the daily load rate, load standard deviation and building distance of each building group as the criterion layer, and assigns each peripheral building group to the appropriate building group. Taking a university campus as an example, this method reduces the peak heating load of 6136.61 kW and the peak cooling load of 15507.88 kW. The standard deviation of heating and cooling load of the building group has been reduced by 1272.53 kW and 2352.54 kW, respectively. Furthermore, the daily load rate of the building has been stabilized, and the staggered peak has been adjusted, resulting in a more uniform distribution frequency of the building load.

On Aronsson Equation and Deterministic Optimal Control

When Hamiltonians are nonsmooth, we define viscosity solutions of the Aronsson equation and prove that value functions of the corresponding deterministic optimal control problems are solutions if they are bilateral viscosity solutions of the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation. We characterize such a property in several ways, in particular it follows that a value function which is an absolute minimizer is a bilateral viscosity solution of the HJB equation and these two properties are often equivalent. We also determine that bilateral solutions of HJB equations are unique among absolute minimizers with prescribed boundary conditions.

An optimal consumption, leisure, and investment problem with an option to retire and negative wealth constraints

This paper attempts to choose the optimal consumption, leisure, investment, and voluntary retirement time under the negative wealth constraint. The dynamic programming method is used to derive the value function and to identify the optimal policies when the agent's utility function of consumption and leisure is given in the form of Cobb-Douglas. Finally, the effects of negative wealth constraints were discussed by examining the optimal policies that vary depending on the degree of the negative wealth constraint. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. We study an optimal investment, consumption-leisure and voluntary retirement problem for an agent whose consumption rate process is subject to a subsistence constraint before retirement. We use the dynamic programming method to obtain closed-form solutions for the optimal strategies as well as the value function when the agent's utility of consumption and leisure is of Cobb-Douglas form.

Constraints in the Problem of Finding Optimal Trajectories for a Supersonic Non-Maneuverable Aircraft

The influence of phase and other constraints on the method of searching for the trajectories of a civil supersonic aircraft that are optimal in terms of fuel consumption is considered. Based on the solutions found by the dynamic programming method, which take into account the numerous conditions that must be satisfied by the flight altitude, pitch angle, normal overload, aircraft speed, engine thrust, etc., it is shown that almost all of these conditions can be ignored during the initial stage of calculations, since these constraints do not affect the optimal solutions. Therefore, one can first apply the maximum principle and use the dynamic programming method only in those cases where a sizeable part of the constraints turns out to be significant.
