In this paper, a Biogeography Based Optimization (BBO) technique is introduced to solve multi-constrained optimal reactive power flow (ORPF) problem in power system. ORPF is a multi-objective nonlinear optimization problem that minimizes the bus voltage deviation and real power loss. The feasibility of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated for IEEE 30-bus system and IEEE 118-bus system. A comparison of simulation results reveals optimization efficacy of the proposed scheme over other well established population based optimization techniques like conventional particle swarm optimization (PSO), general passive congregation PSO (GPAC), local passive congregation PSO (LPAC), coordinated aggregation (CA) and interior point based OPF (IP-OPF). We present a novel genetic algorithm-based partitioning scheme for multichip modules (MCM's) which integrates four performance constraints simultaneously: pin count, area, heat dissipation, and timing. We also present a similar partitioning algorithm based on evolutionary programming. Experimental studies demonstrate the superiority of these methods over deterministic Fiduccia-Mattheyes (FM) algorithm and simulated annealing (SA) technique. Our approach performs better than another genetic algorithm-based method recently reported. The adaptive change of crossover and mutation probabilities results in better convergence of the partitioning algorithm.

The primary objective of CDEED (combined dynamic economic emission dispatch) problem is to determine the optimal power generation schedule for the online generating units over a time horizon considered and simultaneously minimizing the emission level and satisfying the generators and system constraints. The CDEED problem is bi-objective optimization problem, where generation cost and emission are considered as two competing objective functions. This bi-objective CDEED problem is represented as a single objective optimization problem by assigning different weights for each objective functions. The weights are varied in steps and for each variation one compromise solution are generated and finally fuzzy based selection method is used to select the best compromise solution from the set of compromise solutions obtained. In order to reflect the test systems considered as real power system model, the security constraints are also taken into account. Three new versions of DHS (differential harmony search) algorithms have been proposed to solve the CDEED problems. The feasibility of the proposed algorithms is demonstrated on IEEE-26 and IEEE-39 bus systems. The result obtained by the proposed CSADHS (chaotic self-adaptive differential harmony search) algorithm is found to be better than EP (evolutionary programming), DHS, and the other proposed algorithms in terms of solution quality, convergence speed and computation time. The tree topology in multicast systems has high transmission efficiency, low latency, but poor resilience to node failures. In our work, some nodes are selected as backbone nodes to construct a tree-like core overlay. Backbone nodes are reliable enough and have strong upload capacity as well, which is helpful to overcome the shortcomings of tree topology. The core overlay is organized into a spanning tree while the whole overlay is of mesh-like topology. This paper focuses on improving the performance of the application-layer multicast overlay by optimizing the core overlay which is periodically adjusted with the proposed optimization algorithm. Our approach is to construct the overlay tree based on the out-degree weighted reliability where the reliability of a node is weighted by its upload bandwidth (out-degree). There is no illegal solution during the evolution which ensures the evolution efficiency. Simulation results show that the proposed approach greatly enhances the reliability of the tree-like core overlay systems and achieves shorter delay simultaneously. Its reliability performance is better than the reliability-first algorithm and its delay is very close to that of the degree-first algorithm. The complexity of the proposed algorithm is acceptable for application. Therefore the proposed approach is efficient for the topology optimization of a real multicast overlay.

This paper presents the theoretical development of a complete navigation problem of an autonomous mobile robot. The situation for which the vehicle tries to reach the endpoint is treated using a fuzzy logic controller. The problem of extracting the optimized IF-THEN rule base is solved using an evolutionary algorithm. A new approach based on fuzzy concepts is presented in this paper to avoid any collision with the surrounding environment when this latter becomes relatively complex. Simulation results show that the designed fuzzy controller achieves effectively any movement control of the vehicle front its current position to its end motion and without any collision. Rising complexity within multi-tier computing architectures remains an open problem. As complexity increases, so do the costs associated with operating and maintaining systems within these environments. One approach for addressing these problems is to build self-healing systems (i.e. frameworks) that can autonomously detect and recover from faulty states. Self-healing systems often combine machine learning techniques with closed control loops to reduce the number of situations requiring human intervention. This is particularly useful in situations where human involvement is both costly to develop, and a source of potential faults. Therefore, a survey of self-healing frameworks and methodologies in multi-tier architectures is provided to the reader. Uniquely, this study combines an overview of the state of the art with a comparative analysis of the computing environment, degree of behavioural autonomy, and organisational requirements of these approaches. Highlighting these aspects provides for an understanding of the different situational benefits of these self-healing systems. This paper integrates the hydrogen production and utilization strategies with an economic model of a PEM fuel cell power plant (FCPP). The model includes the operational cost, thermal recovery, power trade with the local grid, and hydrogen management strategies. The model is used to determine the optimal operational strategy, which yields the minimum operating cost. The optimal operational strategy is achieved through estimation of the following: hourly generated power, thermal power recovered from the FCPP, power trade with the local grid, and hydrogen production. An evolutionary programming-based technique is used to solve for the optimal operational strategy. The model is tested using different seasonal load demands. The results illustrate the impact of hydrogen management strategies on the operational cost of the FCPP when subjected to seasonal load variation. This paper presents an automatic way of evolving hierarchical Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy systems (TS-FS). The hierarchical structure is evolved using probabilistic incremental program evolution (PIPE) with specific instructions. The fine tuning of the IF-THEN rule's parameters encoded in the structure is accomplished using evolutionary programming (EP). The proposed method interleaves both PIPE and EP optimizations. Starting with random structures and rules' parameters, it first tries to improve the hierarchical structure and then as soon as an improved structure is found, it further fine tunes the rules' parameters. It then goes back to improve the structure and the rules' parameters. This loop continues until a satisfactory solution (hierarchical TS-FS model) is found or a time limit is reached. The proposed hierarchical TS-FS is evaluated using some well known benchmark applications namely identification of nonlinear systems, prediction of the Mackey-Glass chaotic time-series and some classification problems. When compared to other neural networks and fuzzy systems, the developed hierarchical TS-FS exhibits competing results with high accuracy and smaller size of hierarchical architecture.

Fuel cell power plants (FCPP) as a combined source of heat, power and hydrogen (CHP&H) can be considered as a potential option to supply both thermal and electrical loads. Hydrogen produced from the FCPP can be stored for future use of the FCPP or can be sold for profit. In such a system, tariff rates for purchasing or selling electricity, the fuel cost for the FCPP/thermal load, and hydrogen selling price are the main factors that affect the operational strategy. This paper presents a hybrid evolutionary programming and Hill-Climbing based approach to evaluate the impact of change of the above mentioned cost parameters on the optimal operational strategy of the FCPP. The optimal operational strategy of the FCPP for different tariffs is achieved through the estimation of the following: hourly generated power, the amount of thermal power recovered, power trade with the local grid, and the quantity of hydrogen that can be produced.
