Analysis of the Student Dropout Rate at the Faculty of electrical and computer engineering of the University of Prishtina, Kosovo, From 2001 to 2015

This study analyzed the student dropout rate at the Faculty of electrical and computer engineering (FECE) of the University of Pristina, Kosovo, from 2001 to 2015. This phenomenon is a concern for many countries, not only for students due to its emotional effects and further consequences for their university careers but also for institutions and society in general due to its broader negative impact on their authority. Over the past two decades, a significant number of students have been enrolled in these programs. However, we identified several factors that influenced young people to abandon their studies. The high dropout rate associated with FECE programs results in a lack of professionals in these areas and negatively affects the country's economy. The main reasons given by students for such dropout were unrelated to whether students were from urban or rural areas or economic factors but were strongly related to high school programs and, to a somewhat lesser degree, to poor academic performance in certain courses. This research suggests opportunities for reducing dropout rates, as improvement in this context can be achieved by updating curricula, employing contemporary literature, applying modern teaching methodologies, improving laboratories, and reforming the behavior of certain professors. The main purpose of this study is to find a compromise between the large number of students enrolled in FECE and dropout rates;however, the findings highlight a phenomenon that is very complex and multidimensional, especially when dropout occurs after the first year of study.

Microcontrollers are low-cost, dedicated computer chips that are found in a wide variety of consumer products and commercial applications. With the availability of low-cost development kits with easy-to-use programming interfaces, projects were developed to provide a hands-on introduction to the hardware interfacing and software development of microcontrollers for simple applications. The intended audience of the projects is first- or second-year students with little or no experience with microcontrollers, programming, or electronics. Students construct the electronic interfaces and drivers of basic I/O devices and program a simple 8-pin microcontroller in the C programming language to control the I/O of various projects. The projects involve sequencing of lights, synthesis of sound, motor speed control, and sensor interfacing. The projects have been successfully tested over the last two years in our one-credit Introduction to electrical and computer engineering course, taken by all first-semester electrical and computer engineering sophomores;and, more recently, they are serving as the laboratory-component of our freshmen year engineering and Programming Applications course.

engineering education remains a relatively new and rapidly developing research field. As a result, there are significant variations in the quantity and kinds of engineering education research being conducted and published in different engineering disciplines and local/national contexts. Responding to a lack of systematic attempts to study such dynamics, this paper describes our ongoing efforts to investigate the quantity and nature of engineering education scholarship in electrical and computer engineering (ECE) and allied fields over the last ten years. More specifically, we report preliminary results of an in-depth quantitative and qualitative analysis of journal articles (n=664) published in IEEE Transactions on Education from 2002 to 2011, including co-authorship patterns, geographic distribution of authors, and research funding reported. To help contextualize the study, the authors also discuss other studies of publication trends in engineering education research.

electrical and computer engineering (ECE) theory and tooling are foundational prerequisites for learners' success in designing and building systems (so called "making" activities) and in several STEM majors in higher education. However, ECE education remains significantly inaccessible to students who are blind or have low vision (BLV), due to the field's weighty reliance on visual content. In this work, we reflect on the autoethnographic account of the first blind student to complete the introductory ECE and making course at our educational institution, identifying three main areas pertaining to the overarching theme of inequitable challenges, including the student's experiences with (1) conceptual learning and tooling, (2) translating theory into practice, and (3) experimenting with learning methods and approaches. We then bring together our findings, previous works, and existing tools to propose a preliminary list of design considerations to inform the development of future accessible tools for ECE education and reduce access barriers to the field.

This article reports on the development of a new electrical and computer engineering (ECE) combined degree program, and a corresponding department at a traditionally liberal arts public university. There are many aspects discussed in this writing - from high-level choices to the resources needed for such an endeavor. A new program requires many steps to achieve its approval, its successful integration in the academic infrastructure of the institution, the design of its curriculum, the hiring of faculty, the design of facilities, the institutional support in the form of resources, and the recruitment and retention of students.

ECEbuntu is a free, easily distributable, customized operating system based on Ubuntu 12.04 long term support (LTS) designed for electrical/electronic and computer engineering (ECE) students. ECEbuntu is aimed at universities and students as it represents a cohesive environment integrating more than 30 pre-installed software and packages all catering to undergraduate coursework offered in ECE and computer Science (CS) programs. ECEbuntu supports a wide range of tools for programming, circuit analysis, printed circuit board design, mathematical and numerical analysis, network analysis, and RF and microwave transmitter design. ECEbuntu is free and effective alternative to the existing costly and copyrighted software packages. ECEbuntu attempts to reduce the duplication of efforts on building software workstations in laboratories and is intended to serve as a good teaching resource in a classroom setting.

Hands-on activities in experimental high-energy physics for attraction and motivation to engineering careers

The Brazilian economy has experienced a considerable growth in the last decade, and the demand for engineers has increased significantly as a direct consequence. In order to deal with this novel scenario, it is important to attract new students to engineering and technology careers and also to motivate the current students to finish their undergraduate courses. It was observed that the overall interest for high-energy physics had recently increased, mainly due to the large media exposure of the modern experiments and their discoveries, including the Higgs boson. This work presents the results obtained in an educational project, which was aimed to include students in hands-on research activities related to high-energy physics experiments, in order to augment their interest in engineering and technology. Students from both the first-years of undergraduate engineering courses (from the Federal University of Bahia, Brazil) and secondary/high-school courses (from the Federal Institute for Science, Education and Technology of Bahia, Brazil) were selected to participate in experimental activities within a research group composed mainly of master students and senior researchers. As a result, it was observed that the involved students increased their technical knowledge and became more motivated to pursue advanced studies in engineering, technology and related areas.

The abstract is the quintessential technical writing genre, because abstract writing involves judiciously selecting content and conveying such content in lean, focused writing. This study tested the efficacy of the structured abstract content framework, proposed by Hartley, in the teaching of abstract writing in electrical and computer engineering (ECE). Subject-matter experts and a technical editor independently assessed anonymised abstracts written by four (4) sophomore cohorts based on two (2) source texts. Findings demonstrate that instruction on the structured abstract content framework, as opposed to general abstract instruction, impacts neither content coverage nor writing clarity. However, the study has enabled the authors' to articulate the requirements for the ECE discourse community in a generic, text-blind assessment rubric for abstracts and has provided students with a formal schema for reading technical papers.

Work in Progress: This paper presents innovative practices in Cybersecurity Education. This field is becoming a critical skill to protect the modern infrastructure. Traditionally cybersecurity has been perceived as a skill used mainly by computer scientists. However, there are concerns about the communication protocols operating at lower layers because the vulnerabilities closer to the physical systems do not receive the same attention as the user applications and human interactions. Consequently, electrical and computer engineering programs must introduce cybersecurity awareness in those areas. A common solution is the addition of a cybersecurity class in ECE curriculums. We tried a more holistic approach by providing interventions in different aspects of the student preparation providing a richer experience. A partnership between the US Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) Analysis Center (DAC) at White Sands Missile Range ( WSMR), and the electrical and computer engineering Department at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) has resulted in students learning about cybersecurity through several methods. The partnership helped define the modification of the curriculum and offered opportunities for new research projects. The efforts include sponsorship of capstone projects and support for graduate teaching assistants specialized in promoting cybersecurity education to the entire cohorts. The specialized teaching assistants offered training to the entire cohort of students participating in the capstone design course to provide everyone with cybersecurity awareness. Some of the capstone projects specialized in designing and building cyber-trainer devices that the soldiers use in the WSMR. Since the fall semester of 2020, three cohorts, including 115 senior students, have benefitted from cybersecurity awareness training. There is a great deal of effort (and literature) on preparing undergraduate students to work on research-based problems in the area of signal processing during their undergraduate studies. However, most of the undergraduate students are in fact not ready to carry out some meaningful research until their graduation. One possible reason could be that most of the research problems in the area of signal processing require significant background knowledge in advanced linear algebra and stochastic processes. As a result, students are typically assigned mini-projects (derived from a larger problem being solved), or student-driven design projects in some independent study course. It is expected that after graduating, they will be ready and motivated to do research during their graduate-level higher studies. The focus of this paper, on the other hand, is to present the efforts and results on engaging students in doing research during their undergraduate studies. The electrical and computer engineering (ECE) Department at Nazarbayev University (NU) attracts some of the best students in the country. Considering their potential and motivation level, a strategy has envisaged to engage them for doing research during the early stage of their undergraduate studies. The results of this strategy have been very promising. The selected undergraduate students learned to do independent research in the area of signal processing (and machine learning). Furthermore, their research work has resulted in numerous publications in top-ranked journals and conferences.
