Parameters identification for photovoltaic system via improved electromagnetism-like approach and quadrature technique

Mathematical modelling of photovoltaic modules is substantial for performance analysis of PV cell. So, improved electromagnetism-like algorithm and differential quadrature approach are implemented to evaluate the parameters of photovoltaic single-, double- and three-diode model. Three tested cases are investigated on various PV systems like Kyocera polycrystalline (KC200GT), polycrystalline (Solarex MSX-60) and monocrystalline (R.T.C France). A MATLAB code is designed to solve this problem. The validity of the presented algorithms is explained by comparison of the computed results with other studied methods and calculating various statistical errors. Also, the results are verified by 10 different experimental I-V sets under various meteorological conditions for every panel. It's found that the solutions of the presented approaches show high convergence speed and accuracy compared with different results where the standard deviation of the root mean square error reached 4.31E-4 A between calculated results and experimental measured data and achieved less CPU execution time 1.269 s for R.T.C France. Furthermore, various changed conditions including cell temperature and irradiance conditions are used to validate each method. Also, we compute the maximum power point to get the efficiency of each solar cell where PDQM achieves the best value of efficiency as 16.564 and fill factor = 74.5103 with CPU time = 0.520 s for KC200GT solar panel. Calculation solutions display that the presented techniques can obtain higher parameters identification precision.

Multi-metric optimization with a new metaheuristic approach developed for 3D deployment of multiple drone-BSs

The use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) as mobile Base Stations (BSs) in wireless communication has been claimed to be an effective technique for services planned in next generation cellular networks (5G and 5G+). Effective 3D deployments of BS mounted on drone (drone-BS), in the Area of Interest (AoI) may increase the Quality-of-Service (QoS) of wireless communication in the Internet of Things (IoT). In this article, we solve a dynamic deployment problem (location optimization) of multiple drone-BSs that is NP-hard according to the Air-to-Ground (ATG) model using optimization algorithms with the aim of ensuring optimal rates of coverage of the ground users (user equipments) assumed to be located at certain distance intervals in a defined urban environment. In this regard, we have developed Optimal Fitness-value Search Approaches at Continuous-data range (OFSAC-PSO and OFSAC-EML) and Optimal Fitness-value Search Approaches at Discrete-data range (OFSAD-PSO and OFSAD-EML), which are both based on Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and electromagnetism-like (EML) algorithm. In the study where Monte-Carlo simulations are run, we have created different scenarios for uniform and non-uniform distributions of user equipments (UEs). We have made comparisons according to the following metrics for the approaches that we have developed: the fitness function values of drone-BSs, AoI coverage rates, the number of iteration of simulations, drone-BS altitudes, optimal 2D coverage map, and the 3D optimal locations of drone-BSs. Our simulation results show that, based on the compared metrics, OFSAC developed with PSO-based is optimal compared to other approaches.

A novel multi-objective electromagnetism-like mechanism algorithm with applications in reservoir flood control operation

Reservoir flood control operation (RFCO) is a complex problem that involves various constraints and purposes, which include the safety of the dam, watershed flood control and navigation. These objectives often conflict with each other. Thus, traditional methods have difficulty in solving the multi-objective problem efficiently. In this paper, a multi-objective self-adaptive electromagnetismlike mechanism (MOSEM) algorithm is introduced in the local searching operation of the proposed method. To enhance the optimization ability of EM, a self-adaptive parameter is applied in the local search operation of MOSEM for adjusting the values of parameters dynamically. Moreover, MOSEM is tested by several benchmark test problems and compared with some well-known multi-objective evolutionary algorithms. A case study is also used for solving RFCO problems of the Three Georges Reservoir by using the multi-objective cultured differential evolution (MOCDE), non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II (NSGA-II) and proposed MOSEM methods. The study results reveal that MOSEM can provide alternative Pareto-optimal solutions (POS) with better convergence properties and diversification.

The use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) as mobile Base Stations (BSs) in wireless communication is emerging as an effective technique that should be used for the services planned in the next-generation cellular networks or in disaster situations. Currently, effective 3D placement of BS mounted on UAVs or Drones (Drone-BS), also called Low-altitude Air Platforms, in the defined area significantly increases the Quality of Service (QoS) of wireless communication. This study has been aimed to be performed dynamic deployments (location optimization) of Drone-BSs randomly distributed in the 3D plane in order to optimally cover the users in the urban environment according to the Air-to-Ground (ATG) model. Using new approaches based on the electromagnetism-like (EML) algorithm and the Whale Optimization algorithm (WOA), which are widely used in the literature and are meta-heuristic, it was planned to be covered the maximum number of users on the ground by multiple Drone-BSs. In addition, Extensive-interval Optimal Fitness Search algorithm (EOFSA-EML) and Discrete-interval Optimal Fitness Search algorithm (DOFSA-EML) approaches were developed based on the EML algorithm. Based on comparison metrics for multiple Drone-BSs distributed by EOFSA-EML, DOFSA-EML, and Pure-WOA, it has been found that EML-based algorithms achieve optimal results compared to Pure-WOA.

Coverage analysis and a new metaheuristic approach using the Elfes Probabilistic detection model in Wireless sensor networks

The dynamic deployment of sensors in AoI (Area of Interest) plays an important role in ensuring the quality of services (QoS) of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) by optimising the coverage and lifetime of the network. In this paper, a new dynamic deployment approach using metaheuristics based on electromagnetism-like (EM-L) algorithm and Elfes Probabilistic Detection Model (EPDM) was proposed to optimise the coverage of WSNs based on the sensor coverage problem, and coverage analysis of AoI was performed. A variable threshold detection probability (TDP) was defined instead of defining a fixed TDP as in the literature. Thus, a more realistic modelling environment was created by considering the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in the coverage calculation. The simulation results show that the sensors are always effectively deployed in different scenarios with variable TDPs by the proposed approach compared to a random distribution.

Meta-heuristic approaches for fixed-charge solid transportation problem in two-stage supply chain network

This paper introduces a mathematical model for fixed-charge solid transportation problem for a two-stage supply chain network, considering simultaneously both variable and fixed costs. Existence of the fixed costs and thereupon NP-hardness of the problem, use of meta-heuristics is necessary. Therefore, three approaches as genetic algorithm, electromagnetism-like algorithm and charged system search in accordance with priority-based encoding are developed. Contrary to previous researches which considered conveyances for one stage supply chain, here, conveyances are considered in each stage of the supply chain network for the first time. To determine the parameters' levels and the introduced operators of the algorithms that exhibit best solution, a Taguchi experimental design method is applied. This experimental design decreases the required number of experiments. As final experiment, the performance of the proposed algorithms are compared with each other by running them with different problem sizes.

A hybrid electromagnetism-like algorithm for integration of process planning and capacitated lot-sizing problem

The capacitated lot-sizing problem (CLSP) is extensively discussed in the operation management literature. The CLSP concerns balancing set-up costs against inventory costs under a common capacity constraint, and considers a limited time horizon such that total costs can beminimized. In this regard, the integration of process and production planning is essential to improve system performance. This paper proposes a model for the integration of process planning and production planning for turning parts that can be implemented in CLSP. The developed model simultaneously considers the technology-related constraints and shop floor constraints determined by the available time. In this approach, two new variables are defined for CLSP: part machining time and cost. This model takes the maximum depth of cut and feed rate for each feature with regard to technology constraints, and the spindle speed is selected in CLSP. Since the proposed optimization model is included in the class of NP-hard problems, a hybridization of two meta-heuristic algorithms (an electromagnetism-like algorithm and a simulated annealing algorithm) is used to solve the problem in acceptable time. Finally, the algorithm proposed in this paper is applied on a case study, and the results are discussed.

Matheuristic for the decentralized factories scheduling problem

In this study, a novel mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model is developed for the decentralized factories scheduling problem, where a set of transporters is used for shipping goods among parallel factories to minimize the production costs over all of the factories. Due to its typical features, such as multiple heterogeneous factories and transportation times, this problem is extremely difficult to solve, especially for large-scale problems. In order to address this difficulty, the main aim of this study is to develop a new solution algorithm based on the interoperation of metaheuristics and mathematical programming techniques to minimize the production costs for jobs. The algorithm comprises an electromagnetism-like algorithm and variable neighborhood search. In this hybridization based on MILP relaxation, the guiding principle involves the ordering of neighborhood structures. The results obtained by the proposed algorithm and MILP are analyzed and compared for various test problems. (C) 2017 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Modified electromagnetism-like algorithm and its application to slope stability analysis

In the view of the disadvantages of complex method (CM) and electromagnetism-like algorithm (EM), complex electromagnetism-like hybrid algorithm (CEM) was proposed by embedding complex method into electromagnetism-like algorithm as local optimization algorithm. CEM was adopted to search the minimum safety factor in slope stability analysis and the results show that CEM holds advantages over EM and CM. It combines the merits of two and is more stable and efficient. For further improvement, two CEM hybrid algorithms based on predatory search (PS) strategies were proposed, both of which consist of modified algorithms and the search area of which is dynamically adjusted by changing restriction. The CEM-PS1 adopts theoretical framework of original predatory search strategy. The CEM-PS2 employs the idea of area-restricted search learned from predatory search strategy, but the algorithm structure is simpler. Both the CEM-PS1 and CEM-PS2 have been demonstrated more effective and efficient than the others. As for complex method which locates in hybrid algorithm, the optimization can be achieved at a convergence precision of 1×10-3, which is recommended to use.

Images captured by cameras mounted on the head of walking robots show oscillations due to the locomotion itself. These disturbances difficult the achievement of robotic tasks that rely on visual information. In this work, we tackle this problematic and propose a combined approach based on a controller architecture that is able to generate locomotion for a quadruped robot and a global optimization algorithm to generate head movement stabilization. The movement controllers are biologically inspired in the concept of Central Pattern Generators that are modeled based on nonlinear dynamical systems, coupled Hopf oscillators. This approach allows to explicitly specify parameters such as amplitude, offset and frequency of movement and to smoothly modulate the generated oscillations according to changes in these parameters. An elitist electromagnetism-like algorithm searches for the best set of parameters that generates the head movement in order to reduce the head shaking caused by locomotion. Optimization is done off-line according to the head movement induced by the locomotion when no stabilization procedure was performed. Experiments in a walking AIBO robot demonstrate that the proposed approach generates head movement that reduces significantly the one induced by locomotion.
