This paper discusses the evolution of the SS-411 series digital sun sensor. The earlier SS-256 and SS-330 models have proven themselves in orbit on low-cost satellite missions. The SS-411 represents a further hardware revision with enhanced robustness and improved attitude estimation performance. To complement the latest hardware improvements, researchers in the Space Avionics and Instrumentation Laboratory (SAIL) at Ryerson University in Toronto have developed advanced signal processing routines compatible with the SS-411. These routines significantly improve the accuracy of the sensor's estimation without increasing manufacturing complexity. With this advanced processing, the sensor maintains a 2 - sigma accuracy of 0.11 degrees over the entire field-of-view. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Computational analysis of systems governed by partial differential equations (PDEs) requires not only the calculation of a solution but the extraction of additional information such as the sensitivity of that solution with respect to input parameters or the inversion of the system in an optimization or design loop. Moving beyond the automation of discretization of PDEs by finite element methods, we present a mathematical framework that unifies the discretization of PDEs with these additional analysis requirements. In particular, Frechet differentiation on a class of functionals together with a high-performance finite element framework has led to a code, called Sundance, that provides high-level programming abstractions for the automatic, efficient evaluation of finite variational forms together with the derived operators required by engineering analysis.

Adding value to business applications with embedded advanced analytics

Advanced analytics methods, such as predictive modelling, are increasingly being deployed within business processes – helping companies to increase their revenues or reduce their costs. This article shows how advanced analytics may be embedded directly into business applications, through the use of software drawn from libraries of mathematical and statistical algorithms. We list examples of applications that may benefit from embedded algorithms and provide a case study example on the theme of propensity modelling for customer management. Finally, the article summarises the typical stages in building a business application containing embedded analytics, and the skill sets that are likely to be required. © 2013 Macmillan Publishers Ltd.

Damage detection on engineered systems is a challenging task that has been explored by numerous researchers. In recent years wireless sensors systems have arisen as a vehicle for low-power, low-cost, and localized damage detection that can be applied to various structural systems. Such sensors, however, are limited in their computational capacity and as a result, careful consideration must be taken as to which algorithms can be effectively embedded so as to balance energy constraints with computational efficiency. In this study, two classifier algorithms (least squares classifier and Fisher's linear discriminant analysis) are explored for detecting damage on a cooling system test bed. In particular, the algorithms are used to determine the valve configuration of the system and to verify if damage exists within the valves. To validate the efficiency of the algorithms in the embedded domain, the algorithms are implemented on a wireless sensing network and used to classify the system state of the test bed.

Implementation and validation of real-time algorithms for atrial fibrillation detection on a wearable ECG device

Background: Due to the growing epidemic of atrial fibrillation (AF), new strategies for AF screening, diagnosis, and monitoring are required. Wearable devices with on-board AF detection algorithms may improve early diagnosis and therapy outcomes. In this work, we implemented optimized algorithms for AF detection on a wearable ECG monitoring device and assessed their performance. Methods: The signal processing framework was composed of two main modules: 1) a QRS detector based on a fmite state machine, and 2) an AF detector based on the Shannon entropy of the symbolic word series obtained from the instantaneous heart rate. The AF detector was optimized off-line by tuning its parameters to reduce the computational burden while preserving detection accuracy. On-board performance was assessed in terms of detection accuracy, memory usage, and computation time. Results: The on-board implementation of the QRS detector produced an overall accuracy of 99% on the MIT-BIH Arrhythmia Database, with memory usage = 672 bytes, and computation time <= 90 mu s. The on-board implementation of the optimized AF algorithm gave an overall accuracy of 98.1% (versus 98.3% of the original version) on the MIT-BIH AF Database, with increased sensitivity (99.2% versus 98.5%) and decreased specificity (97.3% versus 98.2%), memory usage = 4648 bytes, and computation time <= 75 mu s (consistent with real-time detection). Conclusions: This study demonstrated the feasibility of real-time AF detection on a wearable ECG device. It constitutes a promising step towards the development of novel ECG monitoring systems to tackle the growing AF epidemic.

The prediction of the time of occurrence of future events has been studied for decades in various scientific disciplines. Such events have historically been defined as moments where variables of interest (or indicators) hit pre-determined thresholds (i.e. the first-hitting time). Recently, semi-closed mathematical expressions were reported in the literature to analytically characterize the probability distribution of the occurrence time of future events, extending the event triggering criteria based on thresholds to a more general and intuitive threshold-less approach, where the occurrence of events is declared through the use of uncertain event likelihood functions. The End-of-Discharge time prognosis problem is formalized in this article via the definition of uncertain event likelihood functions. Moreover, a novel numerical method is proposed to compute the probability distribution of its future time of occurrence based on this conceptualization and exploiting the capability of uncertain event likelihood functions to assimilate uncertainty in analytic expressions. A case study related to energy autonomy in electromobility applications is considered;specifically an electric bicycle. Obtained results show that the proposed method achieves an extraordinary level of convergence in less than a tenth of a second, while the same level of convergence using Monte Carlo simulations under the traditional threshold crossing approach takes hours to be achieved.(c) 2022 ISA. Links between linear bilevel and mixed 0-1 programming problems

We study links between the linear bilevel and linear mixed 0-1 programming problems. A new reformulation of the linear mixed 0-1 programming problem into a linear bilevel programming one, which does not require the introduction of a large finite constant, is presented. We show that solving a linear mixed 0-1 problem by a classical branch-and-bound algorithm is equivalent in a strong sense to solving its bilevel reformulation by a bilevel branch-and-bound algorithm. The mixed 0-1 algorithm is embedded in the bilevel algorithm through the aforementioned reformulation;i.e., when applied to any mixed 0-1 instance and its bilevel reformulation, they generate sequences of subproblems which are identical via the reformulation.

MATRIX Blockset for REX Control System

This paper deals with a function block library (blockset) for embedded linear algebra (matrix) computations. The blockset is based on a subset of BLAS and LAPACK subroutines converted to C language with respect to memory limitations of typical embedded platforms. The subset covers algorithms for real matrices with double precision elements in three areas: singular value decomposition, eigenvalues and Sylvester equation. The Implemented blockset contains besides suitably wrapped BLAS and LAPACK algorithms also function blocks for discretization of continuous linear systems and several helper blocks. The typical use of the blockset is demonstrated on examples in the REX control system. © 2016

Opta Scholar: An Efficient Software for the Bus Routing and Scheduling Problem

While many children walk or cycle to and from school, buses and minibuses are major modes of travel for children. A typical journey of these pupils involves walking to and from the bus stop, waiting at bus stops, and boarding. The school bus routing problem, which consists of a set of students spread in a region who must be brought to and from their schools every school day, is considered in this paper. This paper describes the application of an efficient optimization software, Opta Scholar, to solve the school bus routing and scheduling problem. The application of this software showed major improvements in terms of the number of buses used and travelling costs. Furthermore, the embedded algorithm outperforms existing benchmark results on relaxed forms of the problem. © 2018
