The Dark Inside the Prologue enactive cognition and Eerie Ontology in Catherynne M. Valente's Radiance

Twenty-first-century fiction continues to examine the ontological instabilities of postmodernism. But even as they hold on to the idea of multiple realities, these works also aim to change the tone with which that idea is represented. This article analyzes Catherynne M. Valente's Radiance (2015), a novel which thematizes the unstable ontologies that Brian McHale describes through the metaphor of flickering. By adding embodied and communicative dimensions to the postmodernist imaginary, Valente's novel rethinks what the metaphor of flickering could mean and what effects ontological groundlessness can have on readers. The article connects these literary phenomena to the theories of enactive cognition, and suggests that enactive theory, just like Valente's reinterpretation of postmodern flickering, provides a sense of the world having strange agency as well as lacking proper solidity. Thus contemplating our perception of reality is eerie in the sense proposed by Mark Fisher, a term that provides a new grip on the experience of unstable ontology.

Mougenot and Matheson outline a theoretical approach to cognitive neuroscience that combines the commitments of embodied cognition with a mechanistic approach to scientific explanation. They argue that this theoretical approach provides several general benefits, including enabling researchers to develop more robust theories and ontologies that do not require either neuroscientific reductionism or the complete autonomy of psychology from neuroscience. In this commentary, I argue that the sort of embodied cognitive neuroscience that they envision has a more specific benefit: it has the potential to help resolve internal tensions within 4E cognition.

The causal mind: An affordance-based account of causal engagement

Causal cognition is a core aspect of how we deal with the world;however, existing psychological theories tend not to target intuitive causal engagement that is done in daily life. To fill this gap, we propose an Ecological-enactive (E-E) affordance-based account of situated causal engagement, that is, causal judgments and perceptions. We develop this account to improve our understanding of this way of dealing with the world, which includes making progress on the causal selection problem, and to extend the scope of embodied cognitive science to causal cognition. We characterize identifying causes as selectively attending to the relevant ecological information to engage with relevant affordances, where these affordances are dependent on individual abilities. Based on this we construe causal engagement as based on a learned skill. Moreover, we argue that to understand judgments of causation as we make them in our daily lives, we need to see them as situated in sociocultural practices. Practices are about doing, and so this view helps us understand why people make these judgments so ubiquitously: to get things done, to provide an effective path to intervening in the world. Ultimately this view on causal engagement allows us to account for individual differences in causal perceptions, judgments, and selections by appealing to differences in learned skills and sociocultural practices.

This emerging work presents a novel, theoretically grounded approach to studying canine olfaction, integrating enactive cognition principles with animal-computer interaction. We introduce the development of a sensor-rich olfactory workstation and wearable suit, designed to capture the dynamic coupling between a dog's actions, sensory inputs, and cognitive processes during scent detection tasks. This early-stage research lays both a theoretical foundation and creates an empirical setup to test enactivist hypotheses about olfactory cognition. Our prototype system integrates multiple data streams-including infrared sensors, inertial measurement units, electroencephalography, and high-definition video-providing a holistic view of olfactory perception as an embodied and enacted process. We outline our initial capabilities in multimodal data collection and analysis, and discuss the potential for future developments in sensor integration, data fusion, and machine learning within this theoretical framework. While still in its early phases, this work represents a step towards bridging enactive cognitive science and animal-computer interaction, offering promising avenues for advancing our understanding of canine cognition and enhancing scent detection applications across various fields. By considering the full range of cognitive processes and how they are shaped by the dog's interactions with her environment, this approach centers the dog as an active user within an experimental or operational paradigm, allowing for more effective and ethically conscious animal-computer interaction designs.

Scholars regard educational action research as contributing to change and developing sustainable teaching practices. The theoretical framework revolves around the idea that changes stem from human actions and draws inspiration from several philosophical traditions. However, the dynamo of transformation in the different approaches is generally a systematic self-reflective inquiry. In this study, we examine how changes of practice through educational action research emerge when the process is understood through the enactive theory of participatory sense-making. The point of departure for our methodological examination is an action research project on Movement Integration in Danish primary and secondary schools. Our analysis underscores that the process of dialogue and participation in action research gains impact by embracing joint movement-based actions. The study highlights that pre-reflective and movement-based inquiries may be a significant dynamo in the action research project's effort to become deeply meaningful for the participants, to empower their participation and to make sustainable practice transformations possible. Applying the enactive framework in action research brings forward a methodological awareness about unnoticed dimensions of how participants make sense of action research processes, and the significance of being attentive to and working actively with 1) relation-making, i.e. how participants participate in each other's sense-making by how they move in relation to each other;2) time-making, i.e. how participants' past experiences and future possibilities interblend with how they grasp a given matter;and 3) space-making, i.e. how sense-making is extended into space through the body's location and actions in a given environment.

Coming from the perspective of embodied or enactive cognition, this article argues for the bodily roots of all tradition. Given that tradition entails a givenness inherited from the past meeting with interpretation/modification/construction in the present, it examines tradition as an aspect of self-organizing cultural, particularly reli-gious, systems, including in situations far from equilibrium. Building upon Michael Polanyi's idea that what we tacitly rely upon becomes incorporated into our bodies, the article takes a phenomenological approach to argue that traditions function as part of our bodies through which we meaningfully engage the world. As such, tradition sets limits to our critical penetration, as much of our knowledge is unspecifiable. The Enlightenment ideal that all tradition is thoroughly contestable -open to explicitation and needing justification -remains strong in the academy. The article examines both the pitfalls of critical reflection and when critical reflection is appropriate or necessary.

Affectivity in mental disorders: an enactive-simondonian approach

Several enactive-phenomenological perspectives have pointed to affectivity as a central aspect of mental disorders. Indeed, from an enactive perspective, sense-making is an inherently affective process. A question remains on the role of different forms of affective experiences (i.e., existential feelings, atmospheres, moods, and emotions) in sense-making and, consequently, in mental disorders. This work elaborates on the enactive perspective on mental disorders by attending to the primordial role of affectivity in the self-individuation process. Inspired by Husserl's genetic methodology and Simondonian philosophy of individuation, sense-making is described as the process of progressive concretization and structuration of the self-world structures that support the intentionality of conscious experiences. Accordingly, affectivity is described as the force that anticipates a partial self-world coherence in sense-making. Structurally different types of affective experiences are integrated into the genetic picture and, on this basis, a reinterpretation and classification of certain mental disorders, such as schizophrenia, depression, and the anxiety spectrum, is provided. In this way, this work contributes to a phenomenologically informed enactive account of mental disorders as disorders of affectivity.

Sensorimotor debilities in digital cultures

This paper reflects on the qualities of living and learning in digital cultures, the design of digital technologies and the philosophical history that has informed that design. It takes as its critical perspective the field of embodied cognition as it has developed over the last three decades, in concert with emerging neurophysiology and neurocognitive research. From this perspective the paper considers cognitive, neurological and physiological effects that are increasingly becoming noticed in user populations, especially young populations. I call this class of conditions 'sensorimotor debility', to distinguish it from other psychological, social, cultural and political symptoms associated with computer, internet and social media use.

An Embodied View on Collaboration in Early Childhood Education: Combining Microanalysis and Introspective Analysis of Experiences to Understand Meaning-Making Between Children With and Without Intellectual Disabilities

This paper has a twofold aim. The first is to report a qualitative study exploring the construction of collaborative interactions between typically developing children and children with intellectual disabilities in early childhood education, shifting from a cognitivist toward an embodied account of social cognition. The study combined microanalysis of embodied engagements and a phenomenological method of systematic introspective analysis of experience (PRISMA) to investigate the emergence and maintenance of collaborative interactions. The second aim is to showcase the complementarity of the methods and their potential use as a tool for understanding intersubjectivity in children's social interactions. Participants were twenty-four children aged 3-4: six with intellectual disabilities and eighteen typically developing children. Data consisted of eighteen video recordings of collaborative interactions in a semi-natural context in daycare centres. The results show how typically developing children start the interaction and lead it toward task completion through a scaffolding process of non-verbal regulations facilitated by abbreviations of communication and a combination of sequential actions. This process created bodily invitations for the peer's engagement, notably stronger amongst preferable peers, corroborating previous research on the relevance of such relationships in this age group. The introspective analysis provided insights into how the desire to work together surpasses the need to complete the task-collaboration can emerge outside the pre-determined task and relies on joint actions rather than understanding tasks' goals. Peer relations built during the interactions guided children's behaviours and changed their engagement in the task. This result brings a new perspective to pedagogical planning in early childhood education, indicating the need for teachers to understand children's intersubjective processes as well as elaborate on task instructions and organi

The arts are centrally concerned with intelligent doing. Conventional explanations of the cognitive dimensions of arts practices have been unsatisfying because internalist paradigms provides few useful tools to discuss embodied dimensions of cognition.
