Deep learning has revolutionized data processing by recognizing complicated patterns using multi-layered neural networks. encoding complex data like hyperspectral photos may help deep learning models perform better. encoding shapes raw data for compression, dimensionality reduction, and feature extraction. These methods matter. This research found that higher-dimensional encodings can improve deep learning model accuracy and convergence. Complex encoding algorithms like FE-16D and BLOSUM-20D outperform simpler ones in validation accuracy and AUC. To prove this, extensive testing and comparison were done. The study emphasizes the necessity to combine deep learning frameworks with improved encoding techniques to improve machine learning and large-scale data processing. © 2024 IEEE.

Conversion from digital information to spike trains is needed for Spiking Neural Networks. Moreover, it is one of the most important steps for Spiking Neural Networks. This conversion could lead to much information loss depending on which encoding algorithm is used. Another major problem that can occur in a specific use-case is the limited bandwidth for the spikes that get generated through the encoding algorithm. In this thesis, we propose population Step Forward encoding algorithm. This algorithm takes the signal encoding accuracy of Step Forward encoding algorithm and makes it into a population, generating multiple spike trains. This allows a higher threshold to encode a large part of the signal, increasing the efficiency. We show that population Step Forward encoding algorithm doesn't just work good for the signal encoding accuracy, but also for the classification accuracy. Moreover, population Step Forward encoding algorithm does not only have a high efficiency with a low spike count, it can also achieve higher efficiency with higher spike count. Thus, population Step Forward can make most use of a limited bandwidth of spikes.

The LDPC code, namely low density parity check code, is essentially a linear block code. Its decoding performance is closer to the Shannon limit than the Turbo code. The definition and description of LDPC codes are introduced in this paper. LDPC coding method includes the Algorithm of LU decomposable encoding and the algorithm of partitioned iterated encoding. the algorithm of message passing, the algorithm of minimum-sum decoding and the algorithm of bit-flipping decoding are the common decoding algorithms of the LDPC codes. The concept and features of the encoding and decoding algorithms are explored in this paper to provide some references for the relative researchers.

Multiple VLAD encoding of CNNs for Image Classification

Despite the effectiveness of convolutional neural networks (CNNs), especially for image classification tasks, the effect of convolution features on learned representations is still limited, mainly focusing on an image's salient object but ignoring the variation information from clutter and local objects. The authors propose a multiple vector of locally aggregated descriptors (VLAD) encoding method with CNN features for image classification. To improve the VLAD coding method's performance, they explore the multiplicity of VLAD encoding with the extension of three encoding algorithms. Moreover, they equip the spatial pyramid patch (SPM) on VLAD encoding to add spatial information to CNN features. The addition of SPM, in particular, allows their proposed framework to yield better performance compared to the traditional method.

Approximately lower triangular ensembles of LDPC codes with linear encoding complexity

The complexity of brute-force encoding of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes is proportional to the square value of the block length. Richardson and Urbanke have proposed efficient encoding algorithms for LDPC codes. These algorithms permute the parity-check matrix of the code iteratively, such that it becomes approximately lower triangular. We propose a new approach for efficient encoding of LDPC codes in which we modify the code ensemble to force an approximate lower triangular structure, thus eliminating the need to apply the algorithms of Richardson and Urbanke in this ensemble. We prove that the new ensemble has the same asymptotic threshold as the corresponding standard ensemble. The new ensemble can be used for linear time encoding of an arbitrary code profile. Computer simulations confirm that the performances of the standard and new ensembles are also very similar when using finite length codes.

Eliciting Force and Slippage in Upper Limb Amputees Through Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS)

Upper limb amputation severely affects the quality of life of individuals. Therefore, developing closed-loop upper-limb prostheses would enhance the sensory-motor capabilities of the prosthetic user. Considering design priorities based on user needs, the restoration of sensory feedback is one of the most desired features. This study focuses on employing Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) as a non-invasive somatotopic stimulation technique for restoring somatic sensations in upper-limb amputees. The aim of this study is to propose two encoding strategies to elicit force and slippage sensations in transradial amputees. The former aims at restoring three different levels of force through a Linear Pulse Amplitude Modulation (LPAM);the latter is devoted to elicit slippage sensations through Apparent Moving Sensation (AMS) by means of three different algorithms, i.e. the Pulse Amplitude Variation (PAV), the Pulse Width Variation (PWV) and Inter-Stimulus Delay Modulation (ISDM). Amputees had to characterize perceived sensations and to perform force and slippage recognition tasks. Results demonstrates that amputees were able to correctly identify low, medium and high levels of force, with an accuracy above the 80% and similarly, to also discriminate the slippage moving direction with a high accuracy above 90%, also highlighting that ISDM would be the most suitable method, among the three AMS strategies to deliver slippage sensations. It was demonstrated for the first time that the developed encoding strategies are effective methods to somatotopically reintroduce in the amputees, by means of TENS, force and slippage sensations.

A Coding Algorithm for Constant Weight Vectors: A Geometric Approach Based on Dissections

We present a novel technique for encoding and decoding constant weight binary vectors that uses a geometric interpretation of the codebook. Our technique is based on embedding the codebook in a Euclidean space of dimension equal to the weight of the code. The encoder and decoder mappings are then interpreted as a bijection between a certain hyper-rectangle and a polytope in this Euclidean space. An inductive dissection algorithm is developed for constructing such a bijection. We prove that the algorithm is correct and then analyze its complexity. The complexity depends on the weight of the vector, rather than on the block length as in other algorithms. This approach is advantageous when the weight is smaller than the square root of the block length.

The performance of a shape adaptive activity controlled multistage gain shape vector quantiser for digital image compression is compared with that of more established full search multistage vector quantisation methods. The advantages of the former approach to the vector quantisation coding of images are clearly demonstrated via computer simulation of the respective coding algorithms.

MobileASL is a video compression project for two-way, real-time video communication on cell phones, allowing Deaf people to communicate in the language most accessible to them, American Sign Language. Unfortunately, running MobileASL quickly depletes a full battery charge in a few hours. Previous work on MobileASL investigated a method called variable frame rate (VFR) to increase the battery duration. We expand on this previous work by creating two new power saving algorithms, variable spatial resolution (VSR), and the application of both VFR and VSR. These algorithms extend the battery life by altering the temporal and/or spatial resolutions of video transmitted on MobileASL. We found that implementing only VFR extended the battery life from 284 minutes to 307 minutes;implementing only VSR extended the battery life to 306 minutes, and implementing both VFR and VSR extended the battery life to 315 minutes. We evaluated all three algorithms by creating a linguistically accessible online survey to investigate Deaf people's perceptions of video quality when these algorithms were applied. In our survey results, we found that VFR produces perceived video choppiness and VSR produces perceived video blurriness;however, a surprising finding was that when both VFR and VSR are used together, they largely ameliorate the choppiness and blurriness perceived, i.e., they each improve the use of the other. This is a useful finding because using VFR and VSR together saves the most battery life.

Coding algorithms in voice over internet protocol: A comparative study

Most emerging applications involve the delivery of images, voice, and video to end-user. One of these applications that has generated considerable recent interest is Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP). The objective of this paper is to address the issue of introducing VoIP in today's communication advancements. We demonstrate the problems facing this new technology which is expected to replace or at least work in parallel with the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). Also a simple VoIP implementation is proposed in order to study the effects of compression, packet size, delays and jitter on voice transmission. An experimental analysis is presented of the delay components for a VoIP implementation. © Faculty of Engineering Alexandria University.
