we present the Scenario Markup Language (SML), a powerful language for authoring realistic traffic situations. This effort is part of a novel framework for automatically generating complex scenarios with static and dynamic elements. SML facilitates the scripting of behavioral driver studies in networked multi-user online three-dimensional (3D) virtual worlds.

The increasing volume of content and actions available on the Web, combined with the growing number of mature digital natives, anticipate a growing desire of controlling theWeb experience. Akin to the Web2.0 movement, webies' desires do not stop at content authoring but look for controlling how content is arranged in websites. By content, we mainly refer to HTML pages, better said, their runtime representation: DOM trees. The vision is for users to "prune" (removing nodes) or "graft" (adding nodes) existing DOM trees to improve their idiosyncratic and situational Web experience. Hence, Web content is no longer consumed as canned by Web masters. Rather, users can remove content of no interest, or place new content from somewhere else. This vision accounts for a post-production user-driven Web customization (referred to as "Web Modding"). Being user driven, appropriate abstractions and tools are needed. The paper introduces a set of abstractions (formalized in terms of a domain-specific language) and an IDE (realized as an add-on from Google Chrome) to empower non-programmers to achieve HTML rearrangement. The paper discusses the technical issues and the results of a first validation.

With the rise of rapid physical prototyping tools such as Arduino it has become very easy for designers, makers and developers to build smart devices, simple installations or other single device solutions. However, as soon as a room, floor or building-wide (prototype-) installation should be build consisting of various types of devices that need to communicate, the effort for building these environments still remains extremely high. A lot of this is due to three factors: programming for different platforms, bridging different communication technologies, and physically connecting devices to network and electricity. In this paper we present a concept that drastically reduces this efforts. Thus, designers and developers can focus more on the implementation of the behaviour of interactive environments. We have implemented this concept as a toolkit for on-site setups that allows to easily mash-up heterogeneous sets of devices using a common scripting language and a web-based IDE. We report from interactive installations in office and museum environments that have been realized based on this platform and we point towards new ways of programming environments.

Nest-IF expressions have low readability and maintainability. This paper proposes the first exploration of the nest-if usage status against two large-scale spreadsheet corpora containing over 80,000 industry-level spreadsheets. We found the use of nested-IF expressions are surprisingly common among end users. We then present an approach to tackling this problem through automatic formula refactoring. The general idea is two-fold. First, we detect and remove logic redundancy based on the AST of a formula. Second, we identify higher-level semantics that have been represented with fragmented and scattered syntax, and reassemble the syntax using concise built-in functions. A comprehensive evaluation with over 28 million nested-IF formulae reveals that the approach is able to relieve the smell of over 90% of nested-IF formulae.

Customizing software should be as easy as using it. Unfortunately, most customization methods require users to abruptly shift from using a graphical interface to writing scripts in a programming language. We introduce data-driven customization, a new way for end users to extend software by direct manipulation without doing traditional programming. We augment existing user interfaces with a table view showing the structured data inside the application. When users edit the table, their changes are reflected in the original UI. This simple model accommodates a spreadsheet formula language and custom data-editing widgets, providing enough power to implement a variety of useful extensions. We illustrate the approach with Wildcard, a browser extension that implements data-driven customization on the web using web scraping. Through concrete examples, we show that this paradigm can support useful extensions to many real websites, and we share reflections from our experiences using the tool. Finally, we share our broader vision for data-driven customization: a future where end users have more access to the data inside their applications, and can more flexibly re-purpose that data as part of everyday software usage.

In this position paper we consider the ways in which users can be given control over technology and information, considering the spectrum of design possibilities from 'generative component' solutions, to 'appliance' solutions. We show how security concerns and the processes of user centered design tend to encourage a migration towards the appliance end of the spectrum and then describe problems that arise from this. We then suggest an alternative route towards allowing users more direct control over their information via end user programming, discuss some of the challenges in doing so and how they might be overcome and conclude with a suggestion of a practical first step that system designers might consider.

Software interfaces today generally fall at either end of a spectrum. On one end are programmable systems, which allow expert users (i.e. programmers) to write software artifacts that describe complex abstractions, but programs are disconnected from their eventual output. On the other end are domain-specific graphical user interfaces (GUIs), which allow end users (i.e. non p-programmers) to easily create varied content but present insurmountable walls when a desired feature is not built-in. Both programmatic and direct manipulation have distinct strengths, but users must typically choose one over the other or use some ad-hoc combination of systems. Our goal, put simply, is to bridge this divide. We envision novel software systems that tightly couple programmatic and direct manipulation - a combination we dub prodirect manipulation - for a variety of use cases. This will require advances in a broad range of software engineering disciplines, from program analysis and program synthesis technology to user interface design and evaluation. In this extended abstract, we propose two general strategies - real-time program synthesis and domain p-specific synthesis of general-purpose programs - that may prove fruitful for overcoming the technical challenges. We also discuss metrics that will be important in evaluating the usability and utility of prodirect manipulation systems.

Examples are often a natural way to specify various computational artifacts such as programs, queries, and sequences. Synthesizing such artifacts from example based specifications has various applications in the domains of enduser programming and intelligent tutoring systems. Synthesis from examples involves addressing two key technical challenges: (i) design of a user interaction model to deal with the inherent ambiguity in the example based specification. (ii) design of an efficient search algorithm -these algorithms have been based on paradigms from various communities including use of SAT/ SMT solvers (formal methods community), version space algebras (machine learning community), and A*-style goal-directed heuristics (AI community). This paper describes some effective user interaction models and algorithmic methodologies for synthesis from examples while discussing synthesizers for a variety of artifacts ranging from tricky bitvector algorithms, spreadsheet macros for automating repetitive data manipulation tasks, ruler/ compass based geometry constructions, algebraic identities, and predictive intellisense for repetitive drawings and mathematical terms.

Fifty years since the beginning of the Internet, and three decades of the Dexter Hypertext Reference Model [38, 39] and the World WideWeb [6, 7] mark an opportune time to take stock and consider how hypermedia has developed, and in which direction it might be headed. The modernWeb has on one hand turned into a place where very few, very large companies control all major platforms with some highly unfortunately consequences. On the other hand, it has also led to the creation of a highly flexible and nigh ubiquitous set of technologies and practices, which can be used as the basis for future hypermedia research with the rise of computational notebooks as a prime example of a new kind of collaborative and highly malleable applications.

The paper presents a novel neural design methodology based on the end user programming concept. The proposed solution empowers end users, by means of abstracting the low-level hardware functionalities, to hardware implement Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) using field-programmable gate arrays (FPGA). The main outcomes include rapid ANN design and hardware implementation. A case study of an ANN as a pattern recognition module of an artificial olfaction system trained to identify four coffee brands is presented. An extended analysis has been carried out regarding the recognition rates versus data representation.
