The Web is evolving from the Web of documents to the Web of applications. Web 2.0 communities need end-user programming tools to create interactive applications according to their skills and domain of interest. However, due to the different domains of programming in different communities, providing a generic EUP tool to all communities is not possible. We aim at encapsulating development of domain-oriented EUP tools as a community-based effort-taking place at two layers: (i) among different communities, and (ii) inside a particular community. Accordingly, we suggest a domain-independent model and its respective Web-based infrastructure to supports different online communities to create and appropriate end user development tools for building interactive artifacts collaboratively.

The paper presents a novel neural design methodology based on the end user programming concept. The proposed solution empowers end users, by means of abstracting the low-level hardware functionalities, to hardware implement Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) using field-programmable gate arrays (FPGA). The main outcomes include rapid ANN design and hardware implementation. A case study of an ANN as a pattern recognition module of an artificial olfaction system trained to identify four coffee brands is presented. An extended analysis has been carried out regarding the recognition rates versus data representation.

A major breakthrough in the web would be to enable web users the freedom to task, with resources from across the web, the same way they browse. Mashup, REST service composition, IFTTT and others have made some contribution to that effect. However, none of them is sufficient for web users' everyday use. I present a resource-oriented solution to this problem by introducing a RESTful representation of resources' actions. Using a web tasker, like the browser counterpart, users can express their tasks by selecting resource and its action. They can also specify conditions for executions as well as sequences of resource actions as hypermedia links of actions. Captured by a specialized media type, such instances of web tasking can be processed and executed by machine as an approach for resource oriented web automation as well as resource oriented web agents.

Smart spaces, either public or private, has been a hot topic for more than a decade. They are claimed to bring various advantages for their users. However, only few people are actually using smart spaces. One of the reasons for that is the lack of attention paid to user interfaces used to control the space. Both industrial and academic research is often focused on hardware and device interoperability issues. There is not enough studies about end-user mental models, how and why people want to control and program smart spaces. In this position paper, we propose a strategy of how to bring end-user programming in smart spaces into real life. Our idea is three-fold: 1) concentrate on users' mental models, 2) create intuitive ubiquitous user interface, which combines the direct interaction pattern and the magnetic poetry interface metaphor, and 3) install a control system in a public smart space, where a lot of people can use it on daily basis. We aim to conduct a long term user study, from which we are planning to get unique data about evolution of people's expectations and mental models in the context of smart space control.

end-user programmers, those who write code but lack formal training in computer science, are often reliant on various tools such as API documentation or searching the Web for information in order to complete a specific task. This study examines the information foraging behaviors of a group of web and graphic designers engaged in a series of code modification tasks. We find that users were largely unsuccessful in their foraging activities, with few information seeking events resulting in noticeable changes to participants' source code. Participants viewed remarkably few results generated by their queries and rarely refined queries multiple times. However, these kinds of activities were positively correlated with task success metrics. We conclude with a discussion of the study's results and their implications on the design of future programming environments and search tools for end-user programmers.

One of the Holy Grails of Computer Science for many decades has been to make the power of computer programming accessible to more and more people. The earliest "high level" languages, FORTRAN and COBOL, were intentionally designed to be written and understood by specific communities of users with problems to solve, namely the Scientific/Engineering and Business communities. As computing became more accessible to more people, the number of dedicated full time programmers mushroomed and formed a community unto itself, who largely created languages and tools by and for themselves to use. The end users, the people with the non-computing problems to solve, became isolated from the computer itself and were forced have their business problems encoded in the increasingly esoteric script of a powerful new programmer priesthood. But even throughout these "dark ages", a small number of valiant dissenters survived and flourished in distant monasteries and hermitages, dedicating their lives and technical prowess to liberate computing from its raised floor temples. Resistance was stiff, but not futile, as every decade or so breakthroughs like spreadsheets, Hypercard, 4GLs and HTML empowered more and more "non-programmers" to create their own computing solutions. Now, well into the second era of the Web, consumer-oriented websites like Flickr and YouTube routinely offer end users "snippets" of JavaScript code to reuse in their own software creations, their Facebook and MySpace pages. Projects like IBM's CoScripter have achieved programming by demonstration for end users. Mashup tools abound, and the Web is filled with billions of customized applications, most created by end users themselves. Have we finally achieved the goals of those happy few who dreamed of a world where programming was as common as dialing a telephone? Have we finally arrived at the Long Tail of programming? And if we have built it, did they come? This talk will assess the current state of end user programming

Examples are often a natural way to specify various computational artifacts such as programs, queries, and sequences. Synthesizing such artifacts from example based specifications has various applications in the domains of enduser programming and intelligent tutoring systems. Synthesis from examples involves addressing two key technical challenges: (i) design of a user interaction model to deal with the inherent ambiguity in the example based specification. (ii) design of an efficient search algorithm -these algorithms have been based on paradigms from various communities including use of SAT/ SMT solvers (formal methods community), version space algebras (machine learning community), and A*-style goal-directed heuristics (AI community). This paper describes some effective user interaction models and algorithmic methodologies for synthesis from examples while discussing synthesizers for a variety of artifacts ranging from tricky bitvector algorithms, spreadsheet macros for automating repetitive data manipulation tasks, ruler/ compass based geometry constructions, algebraic identities, and predictive intellisense for repetitive drawings and mathematical terms.

We evaluated the impacts of hands-on web development workshops organized for female undergraduates who had no programming background. In five groups ranging from 2-8 participants, the women used a special-purpose tool (wProjects) to edit database tables, build queries, and embed the queries in web pages. We gathered background information on a pre-test and assessed knowledge and perceptions in a post-test. In general, the students were successful, enjoyed the projects, and their attitudes about computer-related careers were enhanced. We discuss the potential for workshops such as these in light of the general problem of decreasing females in computer-related professions.

Data entry professionals perform lengthy, repetitive tasks by hand, usually without the support of software tools. Since existing generic tools for end user programming were unable to automate data entry tasks, we worked with two data entry professionals on the iterative design and development of a new tool, named CoScripter Tables. The tool was made available within our corporation as a prototype and has been successfully adopted and is in regular use. This paper characterizes the needs of data entry professionals, describes the novel features of our tool, and presents a survey of 16 users which validates its use in a variety of real-world data entry tasks.
