One of the most important features of enterprise architecture modeling approaches is the set of views and viewpoints they use to convey the properties of enterprise systems - that is, their viewpoint framework. All mainstream approaches such as Zachman, RM-ODP, TOGAF and Archimate use the notion of independent "concerns" or dimensions to organize their views and viewpoints, but often do so in ways that are inconsistent and overly complex. In this paper we compare the viewpoint framework of one well known enterprise architecture modeling approach, Archimate, to the Orthographic modeling approach which was developed to apply the idea of dimension-based view identification and selection in a pure, comprehensive form. After identifying weakness in Archimate's viewpoint framework from an orthographic modeling perspective we suggest how the former can be realized by, and adapted for, the latter.

The business capability map has gained close attention from organizations as an essential tool for communication between business and IT. However, its integration with the enterprise data model is hampered by semantic issues that complicate stakeholder communication. This study, based on an analysis of TOGAF, presents a refined metamodel to resolve these issues and ensure alignment between the business capability map and the enterprise data model. The utility of the metamodel was demonstrated through a case study of Dutch energy system operators. The findings not only enhance model consistency and stakeholder communication but also provide a foundation for future research, suggesting the integration of additional elements into the metamodel to broaden its scope and utility.

In enterprise architecture Management (EAM), rules, constraints, and principles guide and govern the enterprise architecture (EA). These can be formulated and verified in ontology-based enterprise architecture models. The automatic validation of EA principles relies on the knowledge available in the EA models. However, there is knowledge implicit in models that humans may understand but machines cannot. For example, relationships between model elements may be derived using derivation rules and domain knowledge. Formalizing derivation rules in an enterprise ontology, we can infer this implicit knowledge and make it available to the machine for reasoning. This research demonstrates the feasibility of using derivation rules to extract implicit knowledge from enterprise models allowing EA principles validation and supporting EAM. The research contribution is presented using a concrete real-world use case and implementing the derivation rules for the EA modeling standard ArchiMate.

Toward an ontology for EA modeling and EA model quality

Models have long since been used, in different shapes and forms, to understand, communicate about, and (re)shape, the world around us;including many different social, economic, biological, chemical, physical, and digital aspects. This is also the case in the context of enterprise architecture (EA), where we see a wide range of models in many different shapes and forms being used as well. Researchers in EA modeling usually introduce their own lexicon, and perspective of what a model actually is, while accepting (often implicitly) the accompanying ontological commitments. Similarly, practitioners of EA modeling implicitly also commit to (different) ontologies, resulting in models that have an uncertain ontological standing. This is because, for the subject domain of enterprise architecture models (as opposed to the content of such models), no single ontology has gained major traction. As a result, studies into aspects of enterprise architecture models, such as "model quality" and "return on modeling effort", are fragmented, and cannot readily be compared or combined. This paper proposes a comprehensive applied ontology, specifically geared to enterprise architecture modeling. Ontologies represent structured knowledge about a particular subject domain. It allows for study into, and reasoning about, that subject domain. Our ontology is derived from a theory of modeling, while clarifying concepts such as "enterprise architecture model", and introduces novel concepts such as "model audience" and "model objective". Furthermore, the relevant interrelations between these different concepts are identified and defined. The resulting ontology for enterprise architecture models is represented in OntoUML, and shown to be consistent with the foundational ontology for modeling, Unified Foundational Ontology.

enterprise architecture (EA) modeling gives an opportunity to have an overview of the enterprise architecture supporting business-IT alignment within the rapidly changing environment. Visual representation of enterprise architecture models is appropriate for interpretation by humans. Machines, however, cannot interpret labels associated with the model element, as well as its domain-specific concepts. To make EA models machine-interpretable, a graphical representation of models shall be connected to domain knowledge. This research demonstrates an approach to enriching the EA model of a medical institution with healthcare domain knowledge. Evaluation of the developed solution proves that a human and a machine could equally understand the ontology-based EA model.

In this work, we consider the construction of a model on a project developing an Artificial Intelligence (AI) system and propose a modeling approach to represent the project for various application domains by using enterprise architecture (EA) modeling. By the proposed modeling approach, we confirmed that project members from both business and development divisions can have a common understanding regarding the project, and the efficiency of the AI technologies applied in the project can be assessed from a business viewpoint. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2019.

In projection-based modeling environments, users work with views of the modelled system or enterprise that are generated dynamically, on demand, from a Single Underling Model (SUM). Moreover, they usually cannot change the SUM directly, but can only influence its contents indirectly via views. This means that at least some of the views need to be editable so that they can be used to evolve the SUM to a new state. However, this is not always possible when the transformations used to project SUM content into view content do not provide the information needed to unambiguously map view changes into SUM changes. Therefore, mechanisms are needed to identify and take appropriate measures to ensure that the integrity of the SUM is not comprised, and it is not updated in unintended ways, when insufficient information is available. This paper illuminates the basic nature of the problem, categorizes the different kinds of situations in which editing ambiguities can arise and discusses potential strategies for dealing with them. These techniques contribute to the creation of user-friendly, yet dependable, projection-based modeling environments.

A deep view-point language and framework for projective modeling

Most view-based modeling approaches are today based on a "synthetic" approach in which the views hold all the information modeled about a system and are kept consistent using explicit, interview correspondence rules. The alternative "projective" approach, in which the contents of views are "projected" from a single underlying model on demand, is far less widely used due to the lack of suitable conceptual frameworks and languages. In this paper we take a step towards addressing this problem by presenting the foundations of a suitable language and conceptual framework for defining and applying views for projective modeling. The framework leverages deep modeling in order to seamlessly support views that exist at, and span, multiple levels of classification. The viewpoint language was developed in the context of Orthographic Software modeling but is more generally applicable to any projective modeling approach. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. enterprise architecture (EA) description frameworks embody a "worldview" which is used by architects to conceptualize the enterprise and its elements. This "worldview" manifests itself in the choice of language constructs and in modeling rules and guidelines, and, whether explicitly or not, reflects some foundational ontological choices. This paper reflects on the practical consequences of some of these choices. We focus on the capability-related elements in EA defense frameworks (DoDAF, MODAF and NAF). In particular, we analyse the support for modeling capabilities in these frameworks from the prism of a fundamental distinction in formal ontology: two-category vs. four-category ontology. By analyzing the current choices in these frameworks and identifying some adverse consequences, we are able to suggest well-founded recommendations for improvements.

The concept of resource and value in the archimate that is too general allows for modeling and communication problems. Therefore, an ontological analysis is needed to evaluate and redesign the concept of resource and value on the archimate. In this paper, Unified foundational ontology (UFO) is used in conducting an ontological analysis on the concept of resource and value. An ontological analysis is done by considering the mapping between the concept on Archimate and ontology concept on UFO. Semantic problems in resource and value concepts are found when the ontological analysis is performed. The result of this study is Archimate extension with the improvement of resource and value concept. The resulting extension was successfully applied in case studies and was able to handle semantic problems that were identified.
