If an enterprise model is to be used in the strategic decision-making, it should represent the connections between the elements of internal structure, like processes, machines, people, and the elements of the business environment, like market segments, competitors, regulators. The paper presents and discusses a modeling technique - Fractal enterprise model (FEM) - that allows to represent such connections, and a computerized toolkit - FEM toolkit - that supports the modeling process. The presentation is done based on a running example. The attendees will learn about an innovative presentation of a business environment in an enterprise model.

The pace of changes in the business environment in which a modern enterprise operates requires the enterprise to constantly review its business models in order to survive and prosper in the dynamic world. The tutorial introduces an approach to Business model Innovation (BMI) based on a new type of enterprise models called Fractal enterprise model (FEM). The model express the relationship between the enterprise assets and its business processes. The innovation consists of finding a new way of using enterprise assets to produce value for a new group of customers. The tutorial introduces FEM and shows how it could be used for BMI. The introduction is followed by an exercise in which the participants will apply the approach and invent a new business model for their own organizations.

The scope of this article is to present knowledge-based Unified modelling Language (UML) behaviour (dynamic) models generation from enterprise model (EM) technique. The main advantage of this method is that problem domain knowledge inducted during user requirements specification and business modelling IS lifecycle phases are validated and verified before formal criteria defined. In this case empirical factors which could adversely influence the whole IS development process are decreased. The beginning of generation process is a selection of concrete UML model and specific element from EM as the main one. In this article main steps of generation from EM are presented. The conclusive result of the generation from EM are UML dynamic models that specifies structure of specific problem domain and can be used by IS developers in further lifecycle phases.

Plain language summaryThis article argues that the rapid evolution of expectations and influence capacity by corporate stakeholders requires managers in MNCs not only to adapt operating activities, but to rethink the purpose and overarching goal of the business enterprise, adapting it from a shareholder-primacy to a multi-stakeholder enterprise model. This complex adaptation process, however, requires the development of a specific form of competence to be developed and honed, different in kind from the typical capabilities focused on organizational change. With the help of concrete examples of sustainability-driven change initiatives, we discuss how the two enterprise models differ and how the development of this new type of competence facilitates the transition from one to the other. Technical summaryThis article argues that the dynamic capabilities framework can be useful to study the evolutionary change processes that MNCs go through as they strive to innovate and adapt to societal pressures related to corporate sustainability. These pressures require MNCs to rethink and adapt core organizational elements and we argue that current dynamic capabilities theory is not sufficiently developed to explain these adaptive efforts. We suggest refining and extending theory in two directions: (1) distinguishing between behavioral, cognitive, and relational organizational elements as objects of the innovation, change, and learning dynamics;and (2) distinguishing between capabilities specific to generative variation and selection of innovative change and adaptation ideas from those specific to their diffusion and retention. modeling is a means to help simplify the facts without losing the elements that are important to be represented. enterprise modeling (EM) is a process which is made for generating enterprise models that can then be used as documentation, communication, diagnosis, analysis, discussion and in the future as an enterprise planning. There are several approaches to do EM, one of them is by using architecture approach. The enterprise Architecture (EA) approach aims to provide a better understanding of an increasingly complex enterprise by illustrating the relationship between concepts from multiple domains such as strategy, processes, applications and information on a model. Unfortunately enterprises often fail to benefit from the development of EA models that cost money and time. This is because the EA model does not have a high quality. Therefore, the representation that has a high quality in one model is very important in its effort to understand the complexity of real word that exist through the enterprise domain. This paper will discuss 2 (two) parts of quality framework commonly used to determine the quality factor of the conceptual model that can be adopted to determine the quality factor of the EA model. Each framework has the advantages and disadvantages. This paper contains an analysis of 2 (two) framework of CMQF and Sequal in determining the quality factor for enterprise Architecture model. Conseptual modeling Quality Frameworks (CMQF) are typically used to define quality factors in conceptual models. Therefore, the collaboration of 2 (two) quality frameworks, CMQF and Sequal, are expected to produce a comprehensive quality factor for EA model.

This paper investigates the use of modeling conventions for enterprise models. With the help of Archi, a tool supporting the ArchiMate standard, we have enhanced the enterprise modeling process with semantic modeling conventions that support assessment of enterprise models during their design. For enterprise architects who want more from Archi-Mate than just drawing pictures, this paper proposes to use a language and a tool, Ampersand, to impose and verify modeling conventions in ArchiMate models. Unlike informal languages, Ampersand allows enterprise architects to signal where an ArchiMate model violates their own modeling conventions, so they can fix the model accordingly. It allows enterprise architects to enhance their ArchiMate models with semantic modeling conventions that are verified by Ampersand. This paper contains a case study that demonstrates the approach. The authors also share their experience with modeling with semantic conventions.

The paper introduces rules to help identify and depict in a model enterprise activities that engage tacit knowledge. This is done using a specific enterprise modeling technique called Fractal enterprise model (FEM). However, the result can be of interest to researchers and practitioners using other modeling techniques. Though representing tacit knowledge is more or less mandatory for research and practice of Knowledge Management (KM), it is very seldom depicted explicitly in enterprise models of any kind. The type of rules presented in this paper follows our suggestion to consider the so-called discovery power of enterprise modeling languages alongside its expressive power.

Software and hardware differentiation of information flows by areas of activities of a machine-building enterprise, as well as the temporary inconsistency of these flows, is one of the serious problems in managing such an enterprise. In this case, operational management is not linked to the strategic objectives of an enterprise, which generally affects its sustainable development. The construction and use of the enterprise information model serve as a tool for coordinating information flows. The study addresses topical issues of building an enterprise model based on the integrated approach to information management. Technologies formed a unified information environment are based on structuring and describing (modeling) various aspects of enterprise activities and creating its information architecture. Existing corporate information and management systems often have a limited scope that does not cover all enterprise aspects. This study aims to analyze the existing technologies for modeling machine-building enterprise activities and develop proposals for forming its information model. The authors analyzed the methodologies for creating an enterprise model as a combination of its technological, auxiliary, and business processes models. More than that, the authors compared software components written in the unified modeling language and object-process language. According to the results obtained, the authors proposed using the object-process methodology as the basis for creating an integrated or combined information model of a machine-building enterprise. © 2021 CEUR-WS. Application of soft systems methodology to frame the challenges of integrating autonomous trains within a legacy rail operating environment

Increased demand on rail, due to climate initiatives and passenger numbers, places significant pressure on existing railway operations;specifically on capacity, operational flexibility, and network robustness. These pressures are exacerbated by constraints, which prevent the construction of new track and infrastructure. This results in the need to use existing infrastructure and operating processes. One proposed solution is digitalization, which results in autonomous rail, where automated and connected intelligent transport systems facilitate smart traffic management. However, this generates the challenge of integrating autonomous trains and their associated technologies with existing infrastructure and operations. To understand this issue from an enterprise level, this paper has applied Brian Wilson's Soft Systems Methodology (a variation of Checkland's methodology) to the problem situation. This methodology explores and investigates the existing rail system in Great Britain (UK less Northern Ireland) and its stakeholders. The paper aims to propose a solution into how to transform the legacy system into one which incorporates autonomous operations and ultimately becomes fully autonomous. It culminates in a series of models that are relevant to those with a legitimate interest in the system. The models identify the activities required to analyze whether autonomy is worthwhile and if it is, how to successfully integrate it with legacy operations. Additionally, the models provide the basis for which a formal stakeholder analysis can take place.

enterprise systems are the backbone of many companies. Most operational activities are usually not feasible without them. In addition, enterprise systems may also constitute remarkable competitive advantage - or turn out to be a threat to competitiveness, depending on their quality. enterprise systems in general, ERP systems in particular, have been around for some decades. During this time, they have undoubtedly undergone a maturing process. However, hardly any significant progress has been made regarding foundational architectures and corresponding functions. Based on an analysis of widely undisputed objectives and corresponding shortcomings of current enterprise systems, this paper presents an advanced architecture that enables the construction of self-referential enterprise systems (SRES). SRES promise substantial progress with respect to various essential objectives of enterprise systems. The proposed architecture is based on a multi-level language architecture. Among other things, it allows for the integration of enterprise models and corresponding software at run-time. Thus, it does not only boost reuse and adaptability, but substantially fosters user empowerment, too.
