error-control coding for Physical-Layer Secrecy

The renewed interest for physical-layer security techniques has put forward a new role for error-control codes. In addition to ensuring reliability, carefully designed codes have been shown to provide a level of information-theoretic secrecy, by which the amount of information leaked to an adversary may be controlled. The ability to achieve informationtheoretic secrecy relies on the study of alternative coding mechanisms, such as channel resolvability and privacy amplification, in which error-control codes are exploited as a means to shape the distribution of stochastic processes. This use of error-control codes, which goes much beyond that of correcting errors, creates numerous new design challenges. The objective of this paper is threefold. First, the paper aims at providing system engineers with explicit tools to build simple secrecy codes in order to stimulate interest and foster their integration in communication system prototypes. Second, it aims at providing coding and information theorists with a synthetic overview of the theoretical concepts and techniques for secrecy. Finally, it aims at highlighting the open challenges and opportunities faced for the integration of these codes in practical systems.

A satellite network with a GEO data relay satellite and LEO satellites is considered. Broadband data from LEO satellites are transmitted via laser intersatellite link to the GEO relay and then via microwave downlink to the ground. The GEO relay is operated as a regenerative repeater, dominated by onboard digital processing between laser and microwave links In order to achieve maximum independence between the network elements, all data is packetized and frames are encapsulated by superframes and hyperframes in several stages. Even with the usage of well-known traditional error-control coding schemes in LEO and GEO, the interaction between coding, framing and reframing operations and the relations between various packet error rates is challenging but essential for performance assessment. The laser terminals of the optical link are subjected to microvibrations. The vibration spectra of LEO and GEO satellites are converted into a time-variant discrete-time model of the optical link, allowing the generation of error patterns for simulation purposes. The simulation is supplemented with analytical calculations for the prediction of asymptotic error rates. Results available so far prove the performance of the data processing algorithms in particular and the GEO relay concept in general.

High-rate direct-sequence spread spectrum is a modulation technique in which most or all of the spreading is provided by nonbinary data modulation. For applications to mobile ad hoc wireless networks, the limited processing gain of high-rate direct-sequence spread spectrum gives only modest protection against multiple access or multipath interference, which limits the applicability of the modulation technique to fairly benign channels. In this paper, we explore the increased interference-rejection capability that can be obtained from convolutional coding with Viterbi decoding, Reed-Solomon coding with errors-and-erasures decoding, and block product coding with iterative decoding. For channels with multiple access or multipath interference, performance results are given for several soft-decision decoding metrics, the benefits of adaptive-rate coding are illustrated, and the accuracy and utility of the Gaussian approximation are described. We also show how to use the bit-error probability for a system without error-control coding to determine which modulation method will give the best packet-error probability in a system with error-control coding.

An overview of the many practical applications of channel coding theory in the past 50 years is presented. The following application areas are included: deep space communication, satellite communication, data transmission, data storage, mobile communication, file transfer, and digital audio/video transmission. Examples, both historical and current, are given that typify the different approaches used in each application area. Although no attempt is made to be comprehensive in our coverage, the examples chosen clearly illustrate the richness, variety, and importance of error-control coding methods in modern digital applications.

An efficient soft-in-soft-out multiuser detector for synchronous CDMA with error-control coding

We consider synchronous code-division multiple-access (CDMA) communications incorporating an error-control code (ECC) for improved performance. We describe a reduced-complexity multiuser sequence detector and develop a simple method for computing reliability values for the bit decisions produced by this detector. This reliability information is used by a soft-input Viterbi algorithm to decode the ECC. We compare the uncoded and coded performances of this reduced-complexity detector to those of certain decision-feedback equalizer (DFE) multiuser detectors, Simulation shows that the reduced-complexity sequence detector works better than the DFE detectors.

We propose truncating the transmission power (allocating no power) for symbols with low channel gain, and tagging erasures on the corresponding symbols at the receiver. The motivation is that symbols with low channel gain are highly likely to be in error and yet, if transmitted, consume the energy resource and generate interference to other users. Truncating the power for those symbols has the effect of reducing the interference to other users and allocating more power on symbols with high channel gain (thereby reducing the error probability). Since block codes can correct twice as many erasures as errors, the coded performance can be improved by properly combining the power control with the error-control coding. In this letter, we analyze the performance of the Reed-Solomon-coded multicarrier direct-sequence code-division multiple-access systems with two power-control schemes. We show that the probability of incorrect decoding can be significantly improved by properly combining the power control with the error-control coding.

One popular problem of ECC implementation is the trade-off between high coding-gain and decoder's complexity. In this paper, we propose a serial concatenated ECC solution which is a combination of truncated-iteration layered-decoding LDPC block code with low-constraint Viterbi decoder at low code rate. Simulation results show that very high coding-gain and reduced-complexity are achieved. This paper also gives a supposition about applying low code rate ECC for less-active wireless nodes in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) to reduce transmit power and expand sensor network topology.

The complete design of quantum circuits for the quantum realization of the new quantum Viterbi cell in the quantum domain (Q-domain) is introduced. Quantum error-control coding can be important for the following main reasons: (1) low-power fault-correction circuit design in future technologies such as in quantum computing (QC), and (2) super-speedy encoding/decoding operations because of the superposition and entanglement properties that emerge in the quantum computing systems and therefore very high performance is obtained.

The criteria of the output image quality are discussed, and a technique for modeling faults in communication channels is proposed In an example of the compression method based on hierarchical grid inlerpolation, a possibility of significant increase of noise immunity of compressed images is shown.
