To simplify the constructs that programmers have to learn for using paradigms, we extend methods to a new language construct, a method slot, to support both the event-handler paradigm and the aspect paradigm. A method slot is an object's property that can keep more than one function closure and be called like a method. We also propose a Java-based language, DominoJ, which replaces methods in Java with method slots, and explains the behavior of method slots and the operators. Then we evaluate the coverage of expressive ability of method slots by comparing DominoJ with other languages in detail. The feasibility of method slots is shown as well by implementing a prototype compiler and running a preliminary microbenchmark for it.

Programs written in the event-driven style that are typical of mobile and/or Web applications are not easy to read through. For the purpose of reducing the burden put on software developers, we propose a tool for supporting program understanding, named OSAIFU, implemented as a plugin for Android Studio. OSAIFU automatically factorizes source code at hand, i.e., extracts implemented features from source code by analyzing relations among program elements and shows the summary to the user as a list of clickable tag clouds. The user can check how each feature is implemented by clicking a tag cloud and looking at the corresponding part in the source code that is highlighted to make it easy to spot. The results of preliminary case studies show the effectiveness of OSAIFU. OSAIFU is available at https://***/OSAIFU/.

Network measurement is critical in network management such as performance monitoring, diagnosis, and traffic engineering. However, conventional network measurement solutions are limited by simple and fixed functionalities as well as coarse-grained statistics which often fail to precisely illustrate network conditions. In this paper, we propose an event-driven declarative query language, EQuery, for programmable network management in order to design sophisticated measurement tasks and enable event mechanism to avoid human intervene. Furthermore, we design a compiler to support the query language on the EQuery Controller, which drives the chaining query workflow with nondeterministic finite automaton (NFA), and translates measurement jobs into low-level rules/states on the physical devices. Finally, we evaluate the effectiveness of our EQuery framework on a nation-wide operational network with real-time network statistics.

With the popularity of ***, asynchronous, event-driven programming has become widespread in server-side applications. While conceptually simple, event-based programming can be tedious and error-prone. The complex semantics of the *** event loop, coupled with the different flavors of asynchronous execution in JavaScript, easily leads to bugs. This paper introduces a new model called Async Graph to reason about the runtime behavior of applications and their interactions with the *** event loop. Based on the model, we have developed AsyncG, a tool to automatically build and analyze the Async Graph of a running application, and to identify bugs related to all sources of asynchronous execution in ***. AsyncG is compatible with the latest ECMAScript language features and can be (de)activated at runtime. In our evaluation, we show how AsyncG can be used to identify bugs in real-world *** applications.

online matching. Antescofo is a real-time system for performance coordination between musicians and computer processes during live music concert. ATP are used to define complex events that correspond to a combination of perceived events in the musical environment as well as arbitrary logical and metrical temporal conditions. The real-time recognition of such event is used to trigger arbitrary actions in the style of event-condition-action rules. The musical context, the rationales of temporal patterns and several illustrative examples are introduced to motivate the design of ATP. The semantics of ATP matching is defined to parallel the well-known notion of regular expression and Brzozowski's derivatives but extended to handle an infinite alphabet, arbitrary predicates, elapsing time and inhibitory conditions. This approach is compared to those developed in log auditing and for the runtime verification of realtime logics. ATP are implemented by translation into a core subset of the Antescofo domain-specific language. This compilation has proven efficient enough to avoid the extension of the real-time runtime of the language and has been validated with composers in actual pieces.

Programs in the event-driven style that are typical of mobile and/or Web applications are becoming complex and hard to maintain. For the purpose of reducing the burden put on software developers while reading source code to understand its details, we propose a tool for supporting program understanding, named SAIFU (a tool for Supporting program understanding by Automatic Indexing of Functionalities). SAIFU automatically extracts implemented functionalities from source code and puts annotations to them. SAIFU helps the user grasp the behavior and the structure of a whole program by showing a list of the annotations of functionalities. SAIFU highlights a set of statements of the source code that are related to any functionality on the annotation list so that the user can investigate the implementation details of a particular functionality. Experimental results obtained by applying SAIFU to 16 applications in Google Samples confirm that the tool is effective for finding out important statements from existing Android application programs. We present SignalGP, a new genetic programming (GP) technique designed to incorporate the event-driven programming paradigm into computational evolution's toolbox. event-driven programming is a software design philosophy that simplifies the development of reactive programs by automatically triggering program modules (event-handlers) in response to external events, such as signals from the environment or messages from other programs. SignalGP incorporates these concepts by extending existing tag-based referencing techniques into an event-driven context. Both events and functions are labeled with evolvable tags;when an event occurs, the function with the closest matching tag is triggered. In this work, we apply SignalGP in the context of linear GP. We demonstrate the value of the event-driven paradigm using two distinct test problems (an environment coordination problem and a distributed leader election problem) by comparing SignalGP to variants that are otherwise identical, but must actively use sensors to process events or messages. In each of these problems, rapid interaction with the environment or other agents is critical for maximizing fitness. We also discuss ways in which SignalGP can be generalized beyond our linear GP implementation.

JavaScript is a popular language for developing web applications and is increasingly used for both client-side and server-side application logic. The JavaScript runtime is inherently event-driven and callbacks are a key language feature. Unfortunately, callbacks induce a non-linear control flow and can be deferred to execute asynchronously, declared anonymously, and may be nested to arbitrary levels. All of these features make callbacks difficult to understand and maintain. We perform an empirical study to characterize JavaScript callback usage across a representative corpus of 138 JavaScript programs, with over 5 million lines of JavaScript code. We find that on average, every 10th function definition takes a callback argument, and that over 43% of all callback-accepting function callsites are anonymous. Furthermore, the majority of callbacks are nested, more than half of all callbacks are asynchronous, and asynchronous callbacks, on average, appear more frequently in client-side code (72%) than server-side (55%). We also study three well-known solutions designed to help with the complexities associated with callbacks, including the error-first callback convention, *** library, and Promises. Our results inform the design of future JavaScript analysis and code comprehension tools.

A fundamental requirement for modern large-scale distributed applications is the need to quickly adapt to the fast variations in their operational environment. In SOA the need for adaptation influences design, enactment and execution of service compositions (workflows). To maintain a high quality standard and to support continuous improvements of workflows, the quality of intermediate steps has to be assessed during execution and, if needed, interventions have to be performed at the same time. The key concept is to avoid problems, anticipating the detection of their causes. We propose a monitoring system based on the definition of general management policies that are translated in management rules using an event-driven approach. Rules are employed to react to unexpected events, malfunctions, errors or violations of constraints with the objective of dynamically adapting the process in order to overcome the problems still maintaining a high-quality delivery.

The results of preliminary experiments based on the prototype implementation of SAIFU confirm that the tool is effective for finding out important statements from existing application programs.
