PID Controllers are used in almost 95% of control loops in the most process industry. Since the design of a controller for an industrial system is complex due to the presence of model uncertainties, nonlinearities, and disturbances, these controllers are usually not tuned optimally and performance is compromised. Robust fixed structure control is a remedy to the problem, and such a controller design is an optimization problem, characterized by nonlinear multimodal large pursuit space, tight constraints, and expensive objective function. The classic optimization method is not appropriate here as a solution set is to be computed. evolutionary algorithm, a robust search, and optimization method can handle this problem. Covariance Matrix Adapted evolutionary strategy is successfully utilised to design robust PID controller for Sodium chlorate process. The performance in terms Integral Square Error (ISE) for set point tracking, robust stability and disturbance attenuation was found satisfactory.

In this paper we suggest an efficient evolutionary approach based on topological sort techniques for precedence constrained sequencing. The determination of optimal sequence has much to offer to downstream project management and opens up new opportunities for supply chains and logistics. Experimental results show that the suggested approach is a good alternative to locate optimal solution for complicated precedence constrained sequencing as in optimization method for instance.

This article introduces a generic sensitivity analysis method to measure the influence and interdependencies of evolutionary algorithms parameters. The proposed work focuses on its application to a Parallel Asynchronous Cellular Genetic algorithm (PA-CGA). Experimental results on two different instances of a scheduling problem have demonstrated that some metaheuristic parameters values have little influence on the solution quality. On the opposite, some local search parameter values have a strong impact on the obtained results for both instances. This study highlights the benefits of the method, which significantly reduces the parameter search space.

The concept of a large margin is central to support vector machines and it has recently been adapted and applied for nearest neighbour classification. In this paper, we suggest a modification of this method in order to be used for regression problems. The learning of a distance metric is performed by means of an evolutionary algorithm. Our technique allows the use of a set of prototypes with different distance metrics, which can increase the flexibility of the method especially for problems with a large number of instances. The proposed method is tested on a real world problem - the prediction of the corrosion resistance of some alloys containing titanium and molybdenum - and provides very good results.

This paper presents the corrective process control system for achieving a target quality level in glass melting processes. Since automated data collection devices would monitor and log process attributes that are assumed to correlate to a quality level in the glass melting process, appropriate process control logics utilizing the collected data are definitely needed. In this paper, an evolutionary algorithm based search logic is newly proposed. The objective of the proposed logic is to find the best process condition composed of the process attributes which can generate the target quality level. The proposed logic tries to find the best process condition that needs to satisfy the following two criteria: 1) a process condition should require minimal changes from the current setting of the process attributes;and 2) a process condition can generate the exact or closest value against the target quality level. A case study and a developed process control system are presented.

Combinatorial Interaction Testing (CIT) is a technique used to discover faults caused by parameter interactions in highly configurable systems. These systems tend to be large and exhaustive testing is generally impractical. Indeed, when the resources are limited, prioritization of test cases is a must. Important test cases are assigned a high priority and should be executed earlier. On the one hand, the prioritization of test cases may reveal faults in early stages of the testing phase. But, on the other hand the generation of minimal test suites that fulfill the demanded coverage criteria is an NP-hard problem. Therefore, search based approaches are required to find the (near) optimal test suites. In this work we present a novel evolutionary algorithm to deal with this problem. The experimental analysis compares five techniques on a set of benchmarks. It reveals that the evolutionary approach is clearly the best in our comparison. The presented algorithm can be integrated into CTE XL professional tool.

An important inspection task in the automated assembly of printed circuit boards (PCBs) is that of detecting if all components have been placed correctly on the board. This paper describes a constrained evolutionary search based inspection technique for simultaneously detecting multiple component objects in a source image. The approach has the advantage that it does not rely on image alignment (registration) as do conventional optical inspection methods such as image subtraction. It is a template based search method which achieves speed and quality requirements by making use of an evolutionary algorithm and a simultaneous search for multiple objects in a source image using a generalised template. The generalised template matching method defines a template model that takes into account the statistical variations between the grey-level appearances of components. The evolutionary search for specific components is constrained to Canny edges making this a fast method for locating multiple targets. Results are presented for locating multiple surface mount resistors on a PCB so that missing components can be reported.

In this paper we analyze the filter design task and interprete it as an optimization problem. We verify the possibility of applying good local optimization method (Quasi-Newton - QN) and a robust global optimization method (evolutionary algorithm - EA). According to the results of the computer simulation, we conclude that a hybrid solution that combines these two method yields filters of the amplitude characteristic that is better than yielded by the window based design method and better than generated by the QN method alone.
