This paper proposes a new evolutionary algorithm for continuous non-linear optimization problems. This optimization algorithm is inspired by the procedure of trading the shares on stock market and it is called exchange market algorithm (EMA). Evaluation of how the stocks are traded on the stock market by elites has formed this evolutionary as an optimization algorithm. In the proposed method there are two different modes in EMA. In the first mode, there is no oscillation in the market whereas in the second mode, the market has oscillation. It is noticeable that at the end of each mode, the individuals' finesses are evaluated. For the first mode, the algorithm's duty is to recruit people toward successful individuals, while in the second case the algorithm seeks optimal points. In this algorithm, the generation and organization of random numbers are performed in the best way due to the existence of two absorbent operators and two searching operators leading to high capability in global optimum point extraction. To evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, this algorithm has been implemented on 12 different benchmark functions with 10, 20, 30 and 50 dimension variables. The results obtained by 30 dimension variables are compared with the results obtained by the eight new and efficient algorithms. The results indicate the ability of the proposed algorithm in finding the global optimum point of the functions for each run of the program. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper presents exchange market algorithm for solving economic load dispatch problems. exchange market algorithm (EMA) is a new, robust, and strong algorithm to extract the optimal point for global optimization. Inspired by the stock exchange trading method, EMA strives to solve optimization problem. Meticulous investigation of the stock exchange methods employed by the elites in such markets has yielded to shape this algorithm. This algorithm has two searcher operators as well as two absorbent operators for individuals to be absorbed to the elite person, which leads to creation and organization of random numbers in the best way. In order to show the abilities of the EMA, this algorithm has been implemented on four test systems in different dimensions (3, 6, 15 and 40 units) with convex and nonconvex cost functions. The numerical results have been compared with the results of some new and strong algorithms. The results prove the robustness and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm and show that it could be used as a reliable tool for solving practical ELD problems. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. In this paper, an exchange market algorithm (EMA) approach is applied to solve highly non-linear power system optimal reactive power dispatch (ORPD) problems. ORPD is most vital optimization problems in power system study and are usually devised as optimal power flow (OPF) problem. The problem is formulated as nonlinear, non-convex constrained optimization problem with the presence of both continuous and discrete control variables. The EMA searches for optimal solution via two main phases;namely, balanced market and oscillation market. Each of the phases comprises of both exploration and exploitation, which makes the algorithm unique. This uniqueness of EMA is exploited in this paper to solve various vital objectives associated with ORPD problems. Programs are developed in MATLAB and tested on standard IEEE 30 and IEEE 118 bus systems. The results obtained using EMA are compared with other contemporary methods in the literature. Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of EMA in terms of its computational efficiency and robustness. Consumed function evaluation for each case study is mentioned in the convergence plot itself for better clarity. Parametric study is also performed on different case studies to obtain the suitable values of tuneable parameters. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Utilization of exchange market algorithm (EMA) for selective harmonic elimination (SHE) in cascaded multilevel inverters (CMIs) is investigated in this paper. The nonlinear SHE equations are derived for a 7-level CMI based on the Fourier expansion of the output voltage waveform. A cost function is constructed according to the SHE equations and optimization is performed with EMA. In order to compare the results, the SHE equations are also solved with Genetic algorithm (GA) with similar parameters as used for EMA. Optimization results prove that EMA is superior to GA in terms of convergence rate, and achieving exact global minima. For verifying the optimization results, simulations are performed on a 7-level CMI for different modulation indices.

This paper proposes exchange market algorithm (EMA) to solve economic emission dispatch and reliability (EEDR) problem in thermal power plants. The aim of EMA, inspired by the method of selling and purchasing of shares by elite stockholders, is to solve the optimization problems. The EMA is a new, robust and efficient algorithm to exploit the global optimum point in optimization problems. Existence of two seeking operators in EMA provides a high ability in exploiting global optimum point. In economic emission dispatch and reliability, it is tried to utilize generating units in a way that we have high reliability in supplying the system load demand as well as the minimum fuel costs. In this paper, the EMA is successfully implemented on two systems with 6 and 26 generating units considering economic and emission dispatch and system reliability. The obtained results are compared with other advanced techniques. The results well demonstrate the practical advantage of the exchange market algorithm over the other approaches. This paper deals with the load frequency control (LFC) of a three unequal area system with multiple energy sources such as thermal-geothermal, thermal-wind energy system, and thermal-hydro system. An attempt has been made for the first time to utilize cascade integral double derivative and proportional-integral-derivative (IDD-PID) controller for LFC application. A new and powerful evolutionary algorithm called as exchange market algorithm is applied for optimizing the controller gains using an integral square error technique. The investigation is carried out on the dynamic performances of the proposed cascade IDD-PID controller against those of controllers such as PI and PID for a step load perturbation of 1% in area 1. Analysis of results depicts the better response of the proposed cascade IDD-PID controller compared to PI and PID controller responses. In addition, the cascade IDD-PID controller also provides superior dynamic performance even for the application of random load pattern in area 1 which ascertains the robustness of the proposed cascade controllers in containing the area frequency oscillations and tie line power deviations.

Optimal chiller loading for saving energy by exchange market algorithm

The energy consumption in a multi-chiller system is very significant and its consumption will be increased by inappropriate operating of the chillers. Accordingly, the economic dispatch in multi-chiller systems becomes an important issue for saving energy. Such issue is known as optimal chiller loading, which is solved by applying different optimization methods. This study employs exchange market algorithm to obtain optimal set points of the economic dispatch problem on chiller plants, which is inspired by trading the shares on a stock market. exchange market algorithm is proposed for solving continuous non-linear optimization problems and it is comprised of two searching and two absorbing operators. The decision variable of the optimal chiller loading is partial load ratio of each chiller and the objective function of the optimal chiller loading problem is minimizing the power consumption while satisfying the cooling demand. This paper adopts three case studies to evaluate the performance of exchange market algorithm and compares it with other optimization methods applied on the optimal chiller loading problem. Results show that exchange market algorithm is an efficient method for solving optimal chiller loading problem in chiller plants, and is adaptable for usage in air-conditioning systems. In addition, the comparison results show that the exchange market algorithm provides better solutions than previous optimization methods applied on the optimal chiller loading method in terms of convergence speed and total consumption of electrical energy. Medical image segmentation using exchange market algorithm

Color medical images hold noteworthy impact in clinical conclusion and treatment. Medical image segmentation reduces the uncertainty by providing detailed information about the shape, size, or location characteristics. However, traditional methods suffer from low accuracy, high complexity, and are less robust. To overcome these drawbacks, this paper proposes an efficient metaheuristic algorithm, exchange market algorithm (EMA) for multilevel thresholding (MLT) of distinct medical images. Optimal threshold is effectively obtained through the most promising objective functions such as Kapur, Otsu and minimum cross entropy (MCE) aided with EMA. The EMA involves exchange of shares among the investors in stable and unstable market situations to achieve profit. Exploration and exploitation are achieved by second and third groups of stable and unstable modes of EMA. Moreover, the execution time is reduced by the highly competent shareholders retaining their top rank without any changes in their shares. The efficacy of the pro-posed paper is evaluated on three distinct medical images at 4, 5, 6 and 7th threshold levels and compared with the recent algorithms such as Krill herd (KHA), Teaching-learning based optimiza-tion (TLBO) and Cuckoo search algorithm (CSA). Quantitative and qualitative validation by met-rics such as computational time, Peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR), Structural similarity index (SSIM) and Wilcoxon rank sum test affirm that the EMA is superior to other algorithms. On the other hand, Otsu based EMA method is found to be more accurate and robust for improved clinical decision making and diagnosis. (C) 2021 THE AUTHORS. In modern electric grid system, a decision maker (DM) has to operate the system with multiple aims in mind. Traditional electric system was not so complex and emphasis used to be given only in optimizing the cost of energy dispatch. However, recent regulations restrict the environmental emissions caused by the energy sources. Hence, optimum energy generation and dispatch is a very critical issue in modern grid system. When, viewed as an optimization problem complying with both economy and environmental restriction, it is a very challenging one. Researchers in the past have solved such problems as multi objective Economic Load Dispatch (ELD) problem. This paper attempts to solve the same problem as an Optimum Active Power Dispatch (OAPD) problem using a very recently developed optimizer called 'exchange market algorithm' (EMA). The problem is modelled as both single and multi-objective problem. The EMA algorithm proceeds for the global optima through two of its main phases;i.e. balance market phase and oscillated market phase, each having both exploitation and exploration. The superior search capability of EMA is successfully exploited in this paper to attain various objectives. Programs are developed in MATLAB and tested on standard IEEE 30 bus comprising of six thermal units. The results obtained using EMA are compared with other methods reported in consulted literature. Simulation results demonstrate the authority of EMA in terms of its computational efficiency and robustness. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Optimal Location of Capacitive Units in Radial Distribution Networks Aiming to Reduce System Losses Using the exchange market algorithm

Distributed generation (DG) has been a significantly popular approach in recent years due to its sought effects. However, DG tends to intensify the harmonic distortion level. In the case of implanting shunt capacitors, disregarding harmonies lead to increased harmonic pollution as a result of intensifying the imposition between the inductive elements of the power system and the shunt capacitors. The present study aims to develop a new minimization method for power loss in systems that are exposed to inequality or equality constraints by optimizing a long term schedule for radial distribution of capacitor banks. We specified the best locations for the installation of capacitor banks via the Voltage Stability Index (VSI) and the new integrated approach of Loss Sensitivity Factor (LSF). Furthermore, we detected the optimum size of the capacitor via the exchange market algorithm (EMA). To examine the proposed method, we used 34-bus and 85-bus networks considering load variations via 1% step sizes in the range of light load (50%) to peak load (160%) while monitoring the optimization process during the entire period of testing. The comparison of the obtained results with the particle swarm optimization (PSO), Bacterial Foraging Optimization (BFO), and Water Cycle algorithm (WCA) revealed improvement of the voltage profile together with a remarkable reduction in active power loss.
