Using execution trace data to improve distributed systems

One of the most challenging problems facing today's software engineer is to understand and modify distributed systems. One reason is that in actual use systems frequently behave differently than the developer intended. In order to cope with this challenge, we have developed a three-step method to study the run-time behavior of a distributed system. First, remote procedure calls are traced using CORBA interceptors. Next, the trace data is parsed to construct RPC call-return sequences, and summary statistics are generated. Finally, a visualization tool is used to study the statistics and look for anomalous behavior. We have been using this method on a large distributed system (more than 500 000 lines of code) with data collected during both system testing and operation at a customer's site. Despite the fact that the distributed system had been in operation for over three years, the method has uncovered system configuration and efficiency problems. Using these discoveries, the system support group has been able to improve product performance and their own product maintenance procedures. Copyright (C) 2002 John Wiley Sons, Ltd.

We describe a three-step method to allow a developer to understand the run-rime behavior of a distributed system. First, remote procedure calls are traced using CORBA interceptors. Finally, a visualization tool is used To study the statistics and look for anomalous behavior. We are testing this method on a large distributed system (more than 600,000 lines of code) during operation at a customer's site. Despite the fact that the system has been in operation for over three years, we are finding system configuration and efficiency problems using the method.

This paper presents a Hierarchical Scheduling Framework (HSF) recorder for Linux-based operating systems. The HSF recorder is a loadable kernel module that is capable of recording tasks and servers without requiring any kernel modifications. Hence, it complies with the reliability and stability requirements in the area of embedded systems where proven versions of Linux are preferred. The recorder is built upon the loadable real-time scheduler framework RESCH (REal-time SCHeduler). We evaluate our recorder by comparing the overhead of this solution against another (patched) recorder. Also, the tracing accuracy of the HSF recorder is tested by running a media-processing task together with periodic real-time Linux tasks in combination with servers. The tests are recorded with the HSF recorder, and the Ftrace recorder, in order to show the correctness of the experiments and the HSF recorder itself.

Understanding of the dynamic behavior of a system is a key determinant to successful system maintenance. This paper contributes two studies at Ericsson Radio Systems of the perfective maintenance of large and distributed systems. Our approach is a holistic method based on tracing and the technical solution to acquisition of trace data is to use CORBA interceptors. Our method has proven useful in solving a wide variety of problems in design as well as implementation and test - all this to a small price. Examples of improvements are performance, new test cases and merging of objects.

Design and implementation of a tracer driver: Easy and efficient dynamic analyses of constraint logic programs

Tracers provide users with useful information about program executions. In this article, we propose a "tracer driver". From a single tracer, it provides a powerful front-end enabling multiple dynamic analysis tools to be easily implemented, while limiting the overhead of the trace generation. The relevant execution events are specified by flexible event patterns and a large variety of trace data can be given either systematically or "on demand". The proposed tracer driver has been designed in the context of constraint logic programming (CLP);experiments have been made within GNU-Prolog. execution views provided by existing tools have been easily emulated with a negligible overhead. Experimental measures show that the flexibility and power of the described architecture lead to good performance. The tracer driver overhead is inversely proportional to the average time between two traced events. Whereas the principles of the tracer driver are independent of the traced programming language, it is best suited for high-level languages, such as CLP, where each traced execution event encompasses numerous low-level execution steps. Furthermore, CLP is especially hard to debug. The current environments do not provide all the useful dynamic analysis tools. They can significantly benefit froth our tracer driver which enables dynamic analyses to be integrated at a very low cost.

Programmers have always been curious about what their programs are doing while it is executing, especially when the behavior is not what they are expecting. Since program execution is intricate and involved, visualization has long been used to provide the programmer with appropriate insights into program execution. This paper looks at the evolution of on-line visual representations of executing programs, showing how they have moved from concrete representations of relatively small programs to abstract representations of larger systems. Based on this examination, we describe the challenges implicit in future execution visualizations and methodologies that can meet these challenges. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
