Several concepts of coherent control are extended to manipulate light propagating along metal nano-particle arrays. A phase-polarization control strategy is proposed and applied to control the electromagnetic energy transport via nano-array constructs with multiple branching intersections, leading to an optical switch or inverter far below the diffraction limit. An optimal control approach, based on the genetic algorithm optimization procedure, is next generalized to suggest a systematic design tool for plasmonic nano-devices, where both material properties of nano-arrays and incident field parameters are optimized in order to make devices with desired functionality. The proposed schemes axe also used to better understand the physics underlying the phenomenon of electromagnetic energy transport via metal nano-constructs. Several applications of the phase-polarization and optimal control strategies are considered.

The quality of medical ultrasound images is limited by inherent poor resolution due to the finite temporal bandwidth of the acoustic pulse and the non-negligible width of the system point-spread function. One of the major difficulties in designing a practical and effective restoration algorithm is to develop a model for the tissue reflectivity that can adequately capture significant image features without being computationally prohibitive. The reflectivities of biological tissues do not exhibit the piecewise smooth characteristics of natural images considered in the standard image processing literature;while the macroscopic variations in echogenicity are indeed piecewise smooth, the presence of sub-wavelength scatterers adds a pseudo-random component at the microscopic level. This observation leads us to propose modelling the tissue reflectivity as the product of a piecewise smooth echogenicity map and a unit-variance random field. The chief advantage of such an explicit representation is that it allows us to exploit representations for piecewise smooth functions (such as wavelet bases) in modelling variations in echogenicity without neglecting the microscopic pseudo-random detail. As an example of how this multiplicative model may be exploited, we propose an expectation-maximisation (EM) restoration algorithm that alternates between inverse filtering (to estimate the tissue reflectivity) and logarithmic wavelet denoising (to estimate the echogenicity map). We provide simulation and in vitro results to demonstrate that our proposed algorithm yields solutions that enjoy higher resolution, better contrast and greater fidelity to the tissue reflectivity compared with the current state-of-the-art in ultrasound image restoration.

In order to fit an unseen surface using statistical shape model (SSM), a correspondence between the unseen surface and the model needs to be established, before the shape parameters can be estimated based on this correspondence. The correspondence and parameter estimation problem can be modeled probabilistically by a Gaussian mixture model (GMM), and solved by expectation-maximization iterative closest points (EM-ICP) algorithm. In this paper, we propose to exploit the linearity of the principal component analysis (PCA) based SSM, and estimate the parameters for the unseen shape surface under the EM-ICP framework. The symmetric data terms are devised to enforce the mutual consistency between the model reconstruction and the shape surface. The a priori shape information encoded in the SSM is also included as regularization. The estimation method is applied to the shape modeling of the hippocampus using a hippocampal SSM.

The multitarget recursive Bayes nonlinear filter is the theoretically optimal approach to multisensor-multitarget detection, tracking, and identification. For applications in which this filter is appropriate, it is likely to be tractable for only a small number of targets. In earlier papers we derived closed-form equations for an approximation of this filter based on propagation of a first-order multitarget moment called the probability hypothesis density (PHD). In a recent paper, Erdinc, Willett, and Bar-Shalom argued for the need for a PHD-type filter which remains first-order in the states of individual targets, but which is higher-order in target number. In this paper we show that this and much more is possible. We derive a closed-form cardinalized PHD (CPHD) filter, which propagates not only the PHD but also the entire probability distribution on target number.

Nonlinear visual-search (VS) observers have shown an ability to model humans for realistic detection, localization, and classification tasks with tomographic reconstructions. As reconstruction studies test the joint effects of data acquisition and postprocessing, applying observers for similar tasks in the projection domain is also of interest. To help investigate what information a nonideal model can provide in this role, we have developed an analytical method for assessing acquisition quality in the reconstruction domain. This approach is most useful for assessing acquisition quality based on lesion-localization tasks. Observer studies with simulated Ga-67 SPECT data were conducted to test our method. The data were acquired for different numbers of projection angles. The results illustrate how image reconstruction processes can improve on acquisition quality as measured for an anthropomorphic model observer.

An increasing adoption of electronic medical records has made information more accessible to clinicians and researchers through dedicated systems such as HIS, RIS and PACS. The speed and the amount at which information are generated in a multi-institutional clinical study make the problem complicated compared to day-to-day hospital workflow. Often, increased access to the information does not translate into the efficient use of that information. Therefore, it becomes crucial to establish models which can be used to organize and visualize multi-disciplinary data. Good visualization in turn makes it easy for clinical decision-makers to reach a conclusion within a small span of time. In a clinical study involving multi-disciplinary data and multiple user groups who need access to the same data and presentation states based on the stage of the clinical trial or the task are crucial within the workflow. Therefore, in order to demonstrate the conceptual system design and system workflow, we will be presenting a clinical trial based on application of proton beam for radiosurgery which will utilize our proposed system. For demonstrating user role and visualization design purposes, we will be focusing on three different user groups which are researchers involved in patient enrollment and recruitment, clinicians involved in treatment and imaging review and lastly the principle investigators involved in monitoring progress of clinical study. Also datasets for each phase of the clinical study including preclinical and clinical data as it related to subject enrollment, subject recruitment (classifier), treatment (DICOM), imaging, and pathological analysis (protein staining) of outcomes.

The expectation maximization method for maximum likelihood image reconstruction (ML- EM) is one of the most popular algorithms used in SPECT and PET, because it is based on the realistic assumption that photon emission and counts follow a Poisson process. Moreover, this method retains two important theoretical and practical properties namely nonnegativity and self-normalization of the reconstructed image. This latter property means that the number of emitted photons is equal to the number of counts. However, the major disadvantage of this method is the large amount of computation that is required, due to its slow rate of convergence. In this paper, we demonstrate that the ML-EM algorithm is a special case of the modified Newton method and can thus be accelerated by multiplying at each iteration the changes to the image, as calculated by the standard algorithm, by an overrelaxation parameter. This accelerated ML-EM algorithm can further be optimally accelerated, and converges to a good maximum likelihood estimator.

When recording three-dimensional (3D) images by the method of optical sectioning microscopy, each optical section contains the in-focus information plus out-of-focus contributions that obscure the in-focus detail and reduce contrast. There are several methods to remove or prevent the out-of-focus contributions from the stack of optical sections. One such method is image estimation -the use of a computer program based on a mathematical description of the microscope to remove the out-of-focus contributions. Another method is the use of structured illumination and a simple arithmetic operation to obtain a image that in which the out-of-focus contributions are greatly reduced. We derived a method for image estimation that uses the images collected from the structured-illumination microscope. The method improves the resolution of small detail over that possible with the structured illumination using the simple arithmetic formula.

Automated detection of lung nodules in thoracic CT scans is an important clinical challenge. Blood vessels form a major source of false positives in automated nodule detection systems. Hence, the performance of such systems may be improved by enhancing nodules while suppressing blood vessels. Ideally, nodule enhancement filters should enhance nodules while suppressing vessels and lung tissue. A distinction between vessels and nodules is normally obtained through eigenvalue analysis of the Hessian matrix. The Hessian matrix is a second order differential quantity and so is sensitive to noise. Furthermore, by relying on principal curvatures alone, existing filters are incapable of distinguishing between nodules and vessel junctions, and are incapable of handling cases in which nodules touch vessels. In this paper we develop novel nodule enhancement filters that are capable of suppressing junctions and are capable of handling cases in which nodules appear to touch or even overlap with vessels. The proposed filters are based on optimized probabilistic models derived from eigenvalue analysis of the gradient correlation matrix which is a first order differential quantity and so are less sensitive to noise compared with known vessel enhancement filters. The proposed filters are evaluated and compared to known techniques both qualitatively, quantitatively. The evaluation includes both synthetic and actual clinical data.

The contourlet transform is a new extension to the wavelet transform in two dimensions using nonseparable and directional filter banks. The contourlet expansion is composed of basis images oriented at varying directions in multiple scales, with flexible aspect ratios. With this rich set of basis images, the contourlet transform can effectively capture the smooth contours, which are the dominant features in natural images, with only a small number of coefficients. We begin with a detail study of the statistics of the contourlet coefficients of natural images, using histogram estimates of the marginal and joint distributions, and mutual information measurements to characterize the dependencies between coefficients. The study reveals the non-Gaussian marginal statistics and strong intra-subband, cross-scale, and cross-orientation dependencies of contourlet coefficients. It is also found that conditioned on the magnitudes of their generalized neighborhood coefficients, contourlet coefficients can approximately be modeled as Gaussian variables with variances directly related to the generalized neighborhood magnitudes. Based on these statistics, we model contourlet coefficients using a hidden Markov tree (HMT) model that can capture all of their inter-scale, inter-orientation, and intra-subband dependencies. We experiment this model in the image denoising and texture retrieval applications where the results are very promising. In denoising, contourlet HMT outperforms wavelet HMT and other classical methods in terms of both peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and visual quality. In texture retrieval, it shows improvements in performance over wavelet methods for various oriented textures.
