The simulation of sheet metal forming processes via integrating solid-shell element with explicit finite element method

Solid-shell elements can be seen as a class of typical double-surfaced shell elements with no rational degrees of freedom, which are more suitable for analyzing double-sided contact problems than conventional shell elements. In this study, a solid-shell finite element model is implemented into the explicit finite element software ABAQUS/explicit as a user-defined element, through which the sheet metal forming processes are simulated. The main feature of this finite element model is that the solid-shell element formulation is embedded into an explicit finite element procedure, compared to the previous studies on the solid-shell elements under the implicit finite element framework. To obtain a straightforward element, a complete integration scheme is adopted. No loss of generality, a twelve-parameter enhance assumed strain method is employed to improve the element's behavior. Two benchmarks from the NUMISHEET conference and a U-channel roll-forming process are simulated with this explicit solid-shell finite element model. The calculated results are comparable with experimental and numerical results presented in the literatures.

Progressive damage analysis of PFRP double-lap bolted joints using explicit finite element method

To numerically investigate failure behavior of pultruded fiber reinforced polymer (PFRP) bolted joints, a progressive damage analysis (PDA) material model integrating nonlinear shear response, Hashin-type failure criteria and strain-based continuous degradation rules was proposed in the present study. The PDA model was implemented via user subroutine VUMAT, detailed 3D finite element models were established in Abaqus/explicit. Experiments were conducted to validate the proposed PDA model. Result shows that explicit finite element method is computational efficient and can effectively avoid convergence problem. The predicted joint loading response correlates well with the test result. The FE model can accurately capture various failure modes including bearing, shear-out and net-tension and reveal failure propagation and damage mechanism of PFRP bolted joints. Emergence of first fiber compression failure is found to be a good indicator to identify the load at which the load-displacement response becomes nonlinear. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Numerical study on the water impact of 3D bodies by an explicit finite element method

The hydrodynamic problem of the water impact of three-dimensional buoys is investigated by the explicit finite element method with an Arbitriry-Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) solver. The fluid is solved by using an Eulerian formulation, while the structure is discretized by a Lagrangian approach, and a penalty coupling algorithm enables the interaction between the body and the fluids. The remap step in the ALE algorithm applies a donor cell-I-HIS (Half-Index-Shift) advection algorithm to update fluid velocity and history variables. The interface between the solid structure and the fluids is captured by Volume of Fluid method. Convergence studies are carried out for three dimensional hemisphere and cones with different deadrise angles. It is found that the mesh density of the impact domain is very important to the quality of the simulation results. The contact stiffness between the coupling nodes affects the local peak pressure values. The numerical calculations are validated by comparing with other available results, for both the drop cases and the ones with constant impact velocity. 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Seismic slope stability and failure process analysis using explicit finite element method

Earthquake is one of the primary factors that triggers the failure of slopes and the landslides in the mountainous area. In this study, an efficient method for the seismic slope stability analysis and seismic failure process simulation is proposed. The seismic slope stability and the failure process of a two-dimensional slope model are analyzed via the explicit finite element method with the influence of the dynamic mechanical behavior of soil and the frictional resistance characteristic of the slope rupture surface. A dynamic visco-elasto-plastic constituted model for soil is established and written in FORTRAN as a user subroutine of the finite element method code of ABAQUS. The validation of the visco-elasto-plastic constituted model and the explicit finite element method are compared with the experimental results and the implicit method. The seismic factor of safety and the sliding distance of the soil slopes under the natural earthquake conditions are calculated via the dynamic visco-elasto-plastic constituted model and the explicit finite element method. The influence of the ground motion characteristics on the seismic slope stability is analyzed in this study via the specified elastic response acceleration spectrum. The analysis results of this paper suggest that the seismic slope stability analysis and the progressive failure process of the slope under the seismic condition can be analyzed by the explicit finite element method efficiently. The results show that the dynamic mechanical behavior of soil and the ground motion characteristics are both critical influence factors for the seismic slope stability. The frictional resistance characteristic of the slope rupture surface is the principal influence factor for the sliding distance of the slope, and it also has more influence on the sliding distance of a high slope than that of the small slope.

Springback analysis for sheet forming processes by explicit finite element method in conjunction with the orthogonal regression analysis

A new method to evaluate the amount of springback in sheet forming processes based on the explicit finite element method and the orthogonal regression analysis is presented in this paper. To calculate springback accurately, a simple but effective contact searching algorithm is described and Lagrangian multiplier method was used to evaluate the contact force. The loading and unloading process could be simulated within one code. The numerical results by the present method were compared with the results by the commercial dynamic explicit code LS-DYNA3D, also with the experimental results and very good agreement was drawn. In order to obtain the springback conveniently for the purpose of practical use, the orthogonal regression analysis was implemented to establish the explicit relationship between the springback and some design parameters. The present method has been applied to the analysis of some actual sheet forming processes and very good agreement between the numerical results and the experimental results in the final geometry was obtained. Dynamic analysis of lunar lander during soft landing using explicit finite element method

In this paper, the soft-landing analysis of a lunar lander spacecraft under three loading case was carried out in ABAQUS, using the explicit finite element method. To ensure the simulation result's accuracy and reliability, the energy and mass balance criteria of the model was presented along with the theory and calculation method, and the results were benchmarked with other software (LS-DYNA) to get a validated model. The results from three loading case showed that the energy and mass of the models were conserved during soft landing, which satisfies the energy and mass balance criteria. The overloading response, structure steady state, and the crushing stroke of this lunar lander all met the design requirements of the lunar lander. The buffer energy-absorbing properties in this model have a good energy-absorbing capability, in which up to 84% of the initial energy could be dissipated. The design parameters of the model could guide the design of future manned landers or larger lunar landers.

Orbital forming simulation of automotive hub bearing using the explicit finite element method

In this paper, the orbital forming simulation of an automotive hub bearing was studied to predict forming conditions and performances using the explicit finite element method. To set up an efficient solution technique for the orbital forming, axisymmetric finite element models and 3D solid element models were numerically solved and compared to each other. The time scaling and mass scaling techniques were introduced to reduce the excessive computational time caused by small element size in case of the explicit finite element method. It was found from the numerical results on the orbital forming that the axisymmetric element models showed the similar results to the 3D solid element models in forming loads whereas the deformations at the bearing inner race were quite different. Finally the strains at the bearing inner race and the forming forces of the peen were measured by test for the same product used in the numerical analysis, and were compared with the 3D solid element results. It was shown that the test results were in good agreements with the numerical ones.

Granular flow behavior is of fundamental interest to the engineering and scientific community because of the prevalence of these flows in the pharmaceutical, agricultural, food service, and powder manufacturing industries. When granular media come under external load, inter-particle forces in the granular media form an inhomogeneous distribution. In this study, a simulation of the contact forces in granular media was carried out using an explicit finite element method on a biaxial cell of approximately 2500 particles. Some of the key results included the capturing of normal force and tangential force distributions within a granular shear cell.

The method is applied to analyze the dynamic response of a reservoir with considering the dynamic interactions among water, dam, sediment and basement rock. The vertical displacement at the top point of the dam is calculated and some conclusions are given.
