An interactive system previously developed for exploratory visualization of data associations in a data lake using a self-organizing structure of schemas has been improved by incorporating a machine learning function for latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) and a categorization function. A topic (i.e., a list of data values and corresponding appearance probabilities) estimated by LDA can be used as a recommendation that indicates latent data association of co-occurrences in a complex network structure. Results of experiments using random data demonstrated that a latent data association with a signal strength of 0.20 (Jaccard coefficient) can be detected over noise with a strength of up to 0.24. The detected recommendation potentially can help the user to create a hypothesis of a useful pattern in big data.

Creating informative experiences through a visual and interactive representation of health and social care data

Association rule mining is an established machine learning tool for finding patterns ('rules') in big datasets. The algorithm can easily produce a large number of 'rules' of how items in a dataset are related to one another. This can pose a significant challenge to the interpretability and usefulness of the results obtained. In this paper, we present how to support decision making through 'playable mechanics' powered by a video games engine. The premise is to create aesthetic and informative experiences through a visual and interactive representation of a problem space such as the association rules mined from a health and social care dataset. The Unity game engine is used to create a force-directed graph to be rendered and explored in real-time using the Barnes-Hut method to accelerate computations. A Boolean AND/OR/NOT selection function was implemented, enabling the graph to be explored and pruned to the data points specified by the search query. As a result, users can obtain an overview of the large-scale structure of the dataset, with the option of performing targeted explorations around points of interest. To evaluate the effectiveness of the application, a series of online user testing workshops were conducted. The resultant thematic analysis found the incorporated features to be well-integrated, but a difference was found between the responses of users with high or low technical proficiency within the commissioning organization. The technical users were able to quickly grasp the operation of the system but were unclear about its purpose or practical application. Conversely, the health and social care professionals saw the potential value of the tool but were unsure of their personal ability to use it effectively. Finally, System Usability Scale (SUS) scores were obtained from participants in a final in-person workshop, with excellent results overall (mean 84, top quartile).

Tinycubes: A modular technology for interactive visual analysis of historical and continuously updated spatiotemporal data

Technological advances allow sending data collected, like IoT data and Social Network data, immedi-ately to computational centers. However, state-of-the-art solutions for interactive visual exploration and analysis of spatiotemporal multidimensional using a single computer are focused on historical datasets. Also, most of these solutions utilize a monolithic architecture, with a restricted set of information extraction techniques and rigid internal data structures, which leads to the creation of forks to handle different usage needs. Tinycubes is a technology that supports the interactive exploration and visual analysis of spatiotemporal multidimensional continuously collected data in real-time combined with data from historical datasets, consistently producing up-to-date information using a single computer. The technology's core is a novel and efficient data structure based on data cubes that allow data insertion and removal on-the-fly. The Tinycubes Technology is modular, allowing the usage of different information extraction algorithms and efficient data storage methods. Our experiments indicate that Tinycubes will enable the exploration of newly generated data combined with historical data while presenting performance similar or superior to the state-of-the-art solutions that use a single computer.& COPY;2023 Elsevier B.V. Multiple-view geospatial comparison using web-based virtual globes

Existing virtual globes, including both unique platforms and associated visualization applications, often present geospatial information with a single-view mode that restricts the user to a single dataset. Due to the absence of the functionality and user interface for coordinating multiple virtual-globe views, it is either hard or impossible to explore multiple different geospatial datasets simultaneously only using the existing virtual globes, especially when the datasets come in multiple sources, multiple spatial resolutions or multiple temporal scales. Here we present a general visualization framework that supports the exploration and comparison of various datasets with multiple coordinated views in the web-based virtual globe environment. This framework not only comprehensively considers the dynamic master/slave relationship between multiple virtual globes, but also effectively handles the coordination mechanism for diverse views to respond to users' manipulations. We also implement a prototype application (termed MultiGlobe) and demonstrate its effectiveness over three typical application scenarios. The first case addresses the comparison of diverse imagery layers derived from different providers. A second case is examining multiple digital maps for a specific region or theme, such as time-varying LUCC datasets. As a final example, we compare and evaluate the accuracy of multiple DEMs generated from diverse data sources with different resolutions. Our informal evaluation with experts in exploratory visualization and spatial analysis confirms that the multiple-view-enhanced virtual globe can bring many benefits including focusing on spatial awareness, reducing cognitive efforts, coordinating interaction strategies, increasing browsing speed and enhancing comparison capabilities. PurposeVisualizing a brain in its native space plays an essential role during neurosurgical planning because it allows the superficial cerebral veins and surrounding regions to be preserved. This paper describes the use of a visualization tool in which single gadolinium contrast-enhanced T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging was applied in nondefective and nonresective skulls to promote visualization of important *** curvilinear reformatting tool was applied on the supratentorial compartment to peel the tissues to the depth of the dura mater and thereby revealing cortical and vascular spatial relationships. The major advantage of our proposed tool is that it does not require coregistration of anatomical and vascular *** reliability of this technique was supported by comparisons between preoperative images and digital photographs of the brain cortical surface obtained after the dura mater was removed in 20 patients who underwent surgery in the Clinics Hospital of the University of Campinas from January 2017 to April *** fat-suppressed GAD contrast-enhanced T1-weighted magnetic resonance scans provide accurate preoperative 3D views of cortical and vascular relationships similar to neurosurgeons' intraoperative views. In developing countries with limited access to state-of-the-art health technologies, this imaging approach may improve the safety of complex neurosurgeries.

Visualizing log-file data from a game using timed word trees

In this article, we present the application of a method for visualizing gameplay patterns observed in log-file data from a geometry game. Using VisCareTrails, a data visualization software system based on the principle of timed word trees, we were able to identify five novel behaviors that informed our understanding of how players were approaching the game. We further utilized these newly identified player behaviors by triangulating them with geometry test scores collected from players outside the game setting. We compared the predictive capacity of these behaviors against five demographic characteristics commonly observed to be associated with educational outcomes: age, gender, ethnicity, mother's education, and attitude toward video games. Two of the novel behaviors we identified, both reflecting inflexible problem-solving strategies, outperformed all demographic variables except age in terms of predicting change in geometry test scores post-gameplay. We believe that this is sound evidence for the utility of VisCareTrails and the timed-word-tree method for identifying pedagogically relevant player behaviors from semi-structured data associated with educational games.

Visualizing the strategic landscape of arbitrary games

We present Gamalyzer, a game-independent and efficient visualization of sets of play traces. Unlike previous work on game-independent visualization, we focus on sequences of game actions as opposed to sequences of game states. Action sequences directly represent players' strategic decisions. Moreover, since game actions may already be recorded as part of games' telemetry and metrics, Gamalyzer is easier to integrate into existing analysis toolchains than state-sequence-based visualizations. Gamalyzer displays each play trace as a vertical line, with symbols along the line indicating game events. Similar play traces (according to the Gamalyzer metric, a specialization of edit distance) are arranged together along the horizontal axis, and as traces become more and less similar to each other over time, they bend towards and away from each other. The Gamalyzer metric is also used to present only the most interestingly different traces in the visualization, with the rest grouped together under their most similar cousins. We position Gamalyzer as an ideal trace filtering and selection tool to be used in concert with a state-centric (and possibly game-specific) visualization for context. This article also provides a detailed account of the Gamalyzer metric and new advice for defining game action schema to maximize the benefits obtained from the tool, along with two detailed case studies of the Gamalyzer visualization in practice.

Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) platforms have scaled online education to unprecedented enrollments, but remain limited by their predetermined curricula. Increasingly, professionals consume this content to augment or update specific skills rather than complete degree or certification programs. To better address the needs of this emergent user population, we describe a visual recommender system called MOOCex. The system recommends lecture videos across multiple courses and content platforms to provide a choice of perspectives on topics of interest. The recommendation engine considers both video content and sequential inter-topic relationships mined from course syllabi. Furthermore, it allows for interactive visual exploration of the semantic space of recommendations within a learner's current context.

One way to visualize the association of semi-structured data is to show the structure of its schemas. We developed an interactive service system using of a method for self-organizing schema structure, an application of self-organizing mapping. A graph structure is generated by estimating data association as a link between field names in relational tables. This facilitates exploratory visualization in data lakes. Experiment results obtained with a prototype system demonstrated the method's practicability.

The area of Coordinated and Multiple Views has been steadily developing and maturing over the past fifteen years. Some may say that it is a 'solved problem', while others argue that we are only just scratching the surface of the subject. Considering merely the CMV conference series, it is clear to see that in the early years researchers were concerned with models and techniques, while in latter years authors presented more work on how to apply these ideas to different domains. It is our view that there is still much research to be done, but the subject is changing and developing as a tool for Visual Analytics. This paper provides the 'state of the art' of CMV it describes areas that should be developed further and looks at what the future may hold for Coordinated and Multiple Views.
