Distributed Pair programming: A Systematic Literature Review

Context: Geographically distributed teams have adopted agile practices as a work strategy. One of these practices is Distributed Pair programming (DPP). DPP consists in two developers working remotely on the same design, algorithm or code. Objective: In this paper we sought to identify and synthesize papers that describe and analyze DPP both from teaching and practice perspectives. Method: We conducted a Systematic Literature Review to search for empirical evidence in eight digital libraries. Results: Most of the 34 DPP primary studies identified explore DPP from a teaching perspective. We found that DPP requires a specific infrastructure, but the existing studies do not explore the impact of the distribution in the details. There are many tools proposed that support DPP practice, but few of them are evaluated within a software development team. Conclusion: We need more studies that explore the effects of Pair programming in the context of Distributed Software Development, such as coordination and communication. Most of the studies do not empirically evaluate DPP in industry. There is also a need to propose guidelines to use DPP in industry and as a teaching strategy. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Computer programming has a technological part and a creative part;it involves specific technical aspects of programming languages and creative aspects to find the best solutions for different problem domains. The programming learning process encompasses a group of different teacher-student techniques that are put into practice. These techniques have the object of learning a programming language to solve real problems;in this learning process we must include good software development practices of analysis and design so the novice programmer disciplines himself into developing quality software. To improve the learning programming process we use techniques and methods of software development adapting them to the context of courses in programs of the curricula. There are different methods to help us develop quality software;this article is a case study of using PSP (Personal Software Process) method and XP (extreme programming) techniques on curricula's first programming course for engineering students, as support of the learning process of a programming language, and acquiring good software development habits. Evaluating pair programming with respect to system complexity and programmer expertise

A total of 295 junior, intermediate, and senior professional Java consultants ( 99 individuals and 98 pairs) from 29 international consultancy companies in Norway, Sweden, and the UK were hired for one day to participate in a controlled experiment on pair programming. The subjects used professional Java tools to perform several change tasks on two alternative Java systems with different degrees of complexity. The results of this experiment do not support the hypotheses that pair programming in general reduces the time required to solve the tasks correctly or increases the proportion of correct solutions. On the other hand, there is a significant 84 percent increase in effort to perform the tasks correctly. However, on the more complex system, the pair programmers had a 48 percent increase in the proportion of correct solutions but no significant differences in the time taken to solve the tasks correctly. For the simpler system, there was a 20 percent decrease in time taken but no significant differences in correctness. However, the moderating effect of system complexity depends on the programmer expertise of the subjects. The observed benefits of pair programming in terms of correctness on the complex system apply mainly to juniors, whereas the reductions in duration to perform the tasks correctly on the simple system apply mainly to intermediates and seniors. It is possible that the benefits of pair programming will exceed the results obtained in this experiment for larger, more complex tasks and if the pair programmers have a chance to work together over a longer period of time.

A comparison of pair versus solo programming under different objectives: An analytical approach

This study compares the performances of pair development (an approach in which a pair of developers jointly work on the same piece of code), solo development, and mixed development under two separate objectives: effort minimization and time minimization. To this end, we develop analytical models to optimize module-developer assignments in each of these approaches. These models are shown to be strongly NP-hard and solved using a genetic algorithm. The solo and pair development approaches are compared for a variety of problem instances to highlight project characteristics that favor one of the two practices. We also propose a simple criterion that can reliably recommend the appropriate approach for a given problem instance. Typically, for efficient knowledge sharing between developers or for highly connected systems, the pair programming approach is preferable. Also, the pair approach is better at leveraging expertise by pairing experts with less skilled partners. Solo programming is usually desirable if the system is large or the effort needed either to form a pair or to code efficiently in pairs is high. Solo programming is also appropriate for projects with a tight deadline, whereas the reverse is true for projects with a lenient deadline. The mixed approach (i.e., an approach where both the solo and pair practices are used in the same project) is only indicated when the system consists of groups of modules that are sufficiently different from one another.

Pair programming is a key characteristic of the extreme programming (XP) method. Through a controlled experiment we investigate pair programming behaviour of programmers without prior experience in XP. The factors investigated are: (a) characteristics of pair programming that are less favored (b) perceptions of team effectiveness and how they relate to product quality, and (c) whether it is better to train a pair by giving routine tasks first or by giving complex tasks first. Our results show that: (a) the least liked aspects of pair programming were having to share the screen, keyboard and mouse, and having to switch between the roles of driver and navigator (b) programmers solved complex problems more effectively in pairs compared to routine problems, however, perceptions of team effectiveness was higher when solving routine problems than when solving complex problems and (c) programmers who started pair programming with routine tasks and moved on to complex tasks were more effective than those who started with complex ones and moved on to routine ones. We discuss how these results will assist the industry in inducting programmers without prior pair-programming experience into XP process environments.

In our research, we have introduced and implemented a new software development method, Testing Before Coding (TBC), to bring in the benefits of using software development lifecycle in computer programming and improved students program quality. TBC follows the basic concept of Agile Method (such as Test-driven Development, TDD) and makes students a "cultural shift" in developing their computer programs i.e., students must test their own codes and consider testing as an indispensable part of program development. Our method has been exercised in the introductory computer programming courses and has improved the students' programs quality at least 24%.

Pair programming is a programming technique in which pair of people doing programming on a single machine. The programming pair consists of a driver and a navigator or observer. The driver addresses the operational issues;i. e., responsible for implementing the current module in hand. The navigator addresses the strategic issues;i. e., keeps in mind the strategic direction the code must take. Pair programming is a dynamic process and pairing aids the rapid dispersal of system knowledge through the team while developing it. Since most of the pair programming experiments were not conducted as described in extreme programming and the empirical evidence of pair programming is mixed we were not got the true picture about the impact created by pair programming on software development. In this paper, we evaluated the dynamic pair programming methodology with static pair programming and traditional individual programming. The empirical evidence shows that static pair programming is the most expensive and slower technology than dynamic pair programming and individual programming technologies. It also indicates that dynamic pair programming is the fastest software development methodology than static pair programming and traditional individual programming methodologies.

Pair programming is a programming technique in which two programmers use one computer to work together on the same task. There is an ongoing debate over the value of pair programming in software development. The current body of knowledge in this area is scattered and unorganized. Review shows that most of the results have been obtained from experimental studies in university settings. Few, if any, empirical studies exist, where pair programming has been systematically under scrutiny in real software development projects. Thus, its proposed benefits remain currently without solid empirical evidence. This paper reports results from four software development projects where the impact of pair programming on software product quality was studied. Our empirical findings appear to offer contrasting results regarding some of the claimed benefits of pair programming. They indicate that pair programming may not necessarily provide as extensive quality benefits as suggested in literature, and on the other hand, does not result in consistently superior productivity when compared to solo programming.

Pair programming and peer code review are two collaborative inspection methods that improve the quality of software. These light-weight review techniques are low-cost alternatives to formal inspections and rigorous reviews that commonly remove 90% of software defects before even the first test case is run. While pair programming has many advocates, evidence suggests that pair programming is not as useful as claimed and the requirement of the pairs to co-locate is hindrance on many development projects. Peer code reviews, however, have been shown to be just as effective as pair programming and are a better fit for many of today's software efforts that are being developed collaboratively, but asynchronously, in the cloud. In this paper we demonstrate peer review's effectiveness as compared to pair programming in the context of Test Driven Development (TDD), a popular agile programming technique that's rapidly gaining mainstream acceptance. The empirical evidence also shows that equal quality programs can be produced at a lower cost (28% less than pair programming) using a peer review technique in TDD as compared with traditional pair programming
