Cinderella stories are one of the most popular fairy tales in the world. At the same time, they are most stigmatized by people for describing a weak and passive female protagonist. To discover possible explanations for this continuing popularity of Cinderella stories, I chose to analyze the Kongjwi Patjwi story, one of the Cinderella tales in Korea. The Kongjwi Patjwi story is one of the well-known folktales in Korea that has been adapted for children since the beginning of the 20th century. Since the Kongjwi Patjwi story is not familiar to many western people, I first analyze two of the folklore versions of Kongjwi Patjwi to prove that this story is also one kind of Cinderella tale. Both of them have the "innocent, persecuted heroine" theme, which is one of the most distinctive features of Cinderella tales. In one version, the plot follows almost exactly the same trajectory as European Cinderella tales in that it has the lost shoe motif and marriage with the Prince. The biggest difference between the Korean Cinderella and other Cinderella stories is that there is another plot in the Korean Cinderella story as the passive protagonist matures and becomes an independent woman. In some of the adapted fairy tale versions for children, this plot does not appear and the Korean Cinderella becomes another passive girl who is rescued by her Prince Charming. One of the reasons for this change is that the mothers, the buyers of the children's books, want the "Prince Charming's rescue" plot because they find that it is hard to become an independent woman in Korean society. To accommodate the consumers' wants and needs, publishers intentionally change the plots with passive protagonists. The folklore version of Kongjwi Patjwi actually suggests a more independent and mature female character which would be a good role model for many young boys and girls.

The problem addressed in this study was to understand processes and mechanisms that provide value-creating experiences in support of organizational innovation. There was a gap in the literature about factors affecting innovative opportunity identification. The research was guided by systems theory, which allowed for recognition of the organizations' ability to recreate their futures and the contention innovation is an organizational journey that can be systemized. Innovation demands all aspects of an organization be challenged and examined, and critical constraints identified. Critical constraints serve as the boundaries for innovational processes that are unique to the organization. The research questions was: How can leaders of participating nonprofit organizations improve value creation during community development organization training program (CDOTP) workshop sessions to support innovative opportunity identification? An exploratory qualitative inquiry which allowed access to the personal experiences of 20 management workshop participants from three participant groups; nonprofit (NP) organizational leaders, workshop creators/presenters and workshop training participants, ages 18 and over. Overall the findings were consistent with the literature reviewed for this study. Results strongly indicated acknowledgement of a leadership gap that keeps individuals and organizations stuck in the status quo. The data analysis revealed factors impeding adaptive capacity building, knowledge sharing, transfer of new learning, motivation, and empowerment were driven by lack of leadership commitment to experiment with new processes and behaviors. The results reinforce a sense of urgency for leaders to challenge the rigidness of the NP culture and explore with new possibilities that recognize value creating experiences and support both organizational innovation and organizational sustainability.

Divided into two parts, the first four chapters of Comets and their Origin refer to comets and their formation in general, describing cometary missions, comet remote observations, astrochemistry, artificial comets, and the chirality phenomenon. Within many African American communities, there has been a permeating stereotype that fathers are uninvolved. However, over the past 40 years, the numerous contributions fathers make to their children's academic, social, emotional well-being has been better understood. To help fathers increase their parental self-efficacy and decrease stress, fathering skills training programs have been developed. One such program is the 24/7 Dad fatherhood program which addresses topics and issues specific to fathering. This study involved a quantitative pre- and post-test comparison design to examine the effect of the 24/7 Dad fatherhood program on the self- efficacy and stress levels of 60 single African American fathers. Thirty fathers served as the comparison group and 30 fathers completed the 24/7 Dad program. Both groups completed the Parenting Stress Index- Short form (PSI-Sf) and TOPSE (Tool for Measuring Parental Self- Efficacy) at the beginning and end of the study. Data were analyzed using a paired sample t-test. Due to the non-equivalency of the comparison and intervention groups; instead of comparing the two groups, score gains from the pre-and post-test for each group were compared. Results indicated fathers who completed the 24/7 Dad fatherhood program had higher self-efficacy and lower stress level mean scores. In addition, fathers in the comparison group also had higher self-efficacy and slightly lower stress levels at the post-test.

The following qualitative research study directly analyzes the impact of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), also known as "drones", on International Law and the fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. In a future of complex urban centers of domestic and international terrorism, the enforcement of our nation's laws and defending our homeland will soon pose a big problem for our nation. By enabling units with drone capabilities, such as our local law enforcement agencies and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), combatting terrorism may prove more effective and most valuable in sustaining the freedom of our nation. However, the drone "revolution" may inherently create other problems relating to international law and the privacy of our own nation's citizens. Specifically, how will drones affect the fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and international human rights? This in-depth research study and analysis will open new thoughts and discussion on how we must lead and manage this new evolution of technology for the Department of Homeland Security and local law enforcement agencies. The purpose of this quantitative study was to explore the effect leadership style had on the promotion of middle management women in the healthcare industry, as well as, to investigate the roles of education, age and ethnicity in the determination of leadership styles (transactional, transformational, or laissez-faire). The study involved two independent samples, middle and upper management females. The 172 participants were all employed in the healthcare field, worked in organizations with greater than 100 employees, were between the ages of 18 and 65, had at least five years of work experience, and held a job with a classification of middle or upper management. The Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire form 5X (MLQ fORM 5X) survey (Bass & Avolio, 2004) was utilized to determine the participants' leadership style. Additional demographic questions were included in the questionnaire to gather data about the participants' education, ethnicity and age. Comparative analysis completed for the two groups of female leaders (middle and upper management) revealed that upper management females used all but one of the leadership styles available to a greater degree than their middle management counterparts. The findings indicated upper management women in the healthcare industry used a situational approach (Hersey & Blanchard, 1977) to leading. further recommendations to enhance the research findings included conducting additional studies that extend to women in other states, using a longitudinal approach, using a different leadership survey tool such as the LPI, and surveying only men in the healthcare industry to provide a comparison for this study.

The past few decades of statistical or machine learning and data mining research has produced a significant repertoire of algorithms that,when provided sufficient training data,can predict classification labels of newly observed data points. Recently,however,a new challenge has emerged in the form of data through continuous streams instead of the traditional forms of static data sets. Machine learning or data mining in a streaming context encumber algorithms relying on assumptions found in the static data context. One of the most recognized challenges is the intractably large volume,attribute variety,and fast velocity of a data stream,which inhibits any algorithm that requires more than one pass on the data. In addition,as the stream progresses,features may be added,removed,or change in the range of possible values,which is known as feature evolution. The defining concepts for a label or class may also migrate over the span of the data stream. The variation in concept definitions are caused by evolution of the new concept classes and underlying feature evolution. Novel classes that were not known a priori can also appear amid the data stream. Traditional algorithms often characterize unknown labels as errors and outliers,but in the dynamic streaming domain,a sufficiently dense cluster of outliers must be analyzed to discover emergent class concepts,and the concepts should be tracked as they are discovered. The SluiceBox method described in this dissertation aims to adapt to novel classes,feature evolution,and concept drift while predicting data instance labels and adhering to the constraints of continuous data streams. The research presented here details the challenges found in data stream mining with concept drift and evolution,and explores the theoretical requirements for detecting emerging novel classes. This study examines a cultural pedagogy relating to race, culture, and improving student achievement, as well as the extent to which teachers' critical and reflective practices influence how they deliver classroom instructions. When teachers' practices are critical and reflective they can re-assess their current teaching practices while attempting to improve their teaching pedagogy (Morton, 2009; Hatzipanagos & Lygo-Baker, 2006). This study seeks to determine the relationship between student achievement and teachers' use of a cultural pedagogy. Research for this study considers three styles of pedagogy: culturally responsive pedagogy, culturally relevant pedagogy, and critical pedagogy. This study is intended to contribute to the body of research that focuses on student achievement in school districts with a predominantly African American student population. Information gained from this study should be of interest to most education administrators, practitioners, and counselors.

In American juvenile law, the judicial transfer decision, or waiver of jurisdiction, is a legal maneuver by which young offenders are diverted away from the juvenile justice system and subsequently processed and adjudicated within adult systems of law. Although transfer decisions have a long history in modern American jurisprudence, social science has largely neglected to perform a comprehensive inquiry of the social psychological underpinnings of judicial waivers. The extant social psycholegal research hints to potential links between transfer decision-making and three categories of variables: (a) terror management and social information-processing, (b) uncertainty management and attributional reasoning, and (c) statutory and nonstatutory sources of influence. Two social theories (i.e., the dual-process theory of proximal/distal defenses and uncertainty avoidance/causal attribution theory), as well as the literature on judicial waivers, provided three alternative predictions about the nature of the transfer decision-making process. The first theory predicts that implicit mortality salience (MS) cues activate the experiential system, including terror-reducing distal defenses. The processing of vulnerability cues by legal decision-makers could undermine their inferences about a given case and encourage biased decision-making via extralegal analysis. The second theory presumes that the social context of legal decision-making is inherently inexact or uncertain. To the extent that cases are perceived as ambiguous, legal decision-makers could be prompted to apply attributional reasoning styles designed to manage uncertainty, manage crime and improve the likelihood of identifying satisfactory decision-making outcomes. finally, in contrast to both social theories, research purports that transfer decisions emerge from a reconciliatory-type process which differentially weighs a wide array of statutory and nonstatutory sources of influence.
