The effects of non-routine work on the planned goals of an organization were examined through a qualitative case study. The purpose of the study was to identify the distinguishing features of routine and non-routine operational situations from the perspective of employees from three different organizational levels: executives, managers, and staff. The findings contribute to the understanding of how organizational leaders can meet their planned goals in the face of disruptions resulting from unplanned operational situations. Twenty employees of this organization were interviewed on how they perceived their routine work was affected by non-routine operational situations. System theory was the ontology of the research for an integrative study of how routine and non-routine operational situations affected the employees in terms of their job performance, job satisfaction, and effectiveness of response. Based on the findings, non-routine operations were perceived by the employees as departures from their routine work. Employees also indicated that they routinized the work they expected to perform as part of their job, both for efficiency and to ensure completeness. Employees expressed anxiety about non-routine work since it was unplanned and caught them unprepared. However, employees also indicated having a sense of accomplishment from completing non-routine work, when their routine work was also completed. Two sources of job satisfaction were reported by the employees: (a) contributing to organizational performance through completing the routine work; and (b) overcoming the challenges of dealing with the task uncertainties that non-routine work entails. further distinctions between routine and non-routine work were indicated by employees in terms of quality control and quality assurance measures.

Thesis consists of three different chapters: i) Who Exports Better Quality Products to Smaller or More Distant Markets? ii) Skilled-Labor Intensity Differences across firms, Product Quality, and Wage Inequal- ity, and iii) Structural Transformation and Comparative Advantage: Implications for Small Open Economies. In the first chapter, I examine the role of product quality heterogeneity and firms competition in de- termining the spatial patterns of within-product unit values across destinations. Using product-level export data, it is shown that the average export unit value of a product shipped from the US or Korea increases in distance and decreases in destination market size. However, within-product average unit value for products sourced from China and India decreases (increase) in distance (market size). To interpret these different spatial patterns of unit values across exporting countries, model of quality heterogeneity is developed in which firms differ in their workers' skill level and more skilled workers are more productive in performing tasks that improve on product quality. The model predicts that in relatively skill-abundant countries, ex- porting firms specialize in high quality varieties using relatively cheap skilled labor, whereas, in relatively skill-scarce countries, firms with lower quality goods are more competitive. The second chapter proposes a theory to explain the relative wage-rate increase for skilled labor that results from trade liberalization that relies on within-sector reallocations of production resources (skilled and unskilled labor) across firms. Motivated by some stylized facts, in a model with firm heterogeneity, including firms that differ in their skill intensity even within a narrowly defined industry, firms with rela- tively high skill intensity that are more likely to be exporters, and a positive association between a firm's skill intensity and its product quality, I develop a general equilibrium model where firms with a high

The purpose of this qualitative collective case study was to examine the perceptions and lived experiences of senior leaders of three different small-to medium sized manufacturing companies, located in the state of Colorado, as related to success strategies and barriers to lean manufacturing implementation. findings resulted in nine emergent themes: (a) lean manufacturing implementation should be implemented in a way specific to the context of the individual organization; (b) time, resources, and changes in customer demand present challenges in sustaining lean manufacturing implementation; (c) resistance to change is a barrier to lean manufacturing implementation; (d) small-tomedium sized companies use outside consultants and trainers for training staff on lean manufacturing implementation; (e) front line workers need to be trained to apply lean tools and concepts for successful lean manufacturing implementation; (f) front line workers have to own and believe in lean manufacturing for it to be successful; (g) senior leaders have varying definitions of what their role is in leading lean manufacturing implementation; (h) senior leaders have differing perspectives regarding the degree of leadership knowledge required for successful lean manufacturing implementation; and (i) senior leaders struggle to expand lean manufacturing implementation into support departments. Recommendations included (a) viewing lean as a philosophy for managing the business, (b) training and education for senior leaders, (c) defining senior leader roles in implementing lean manufacturing, and (d) strategies when using outside consultants in a company's lean efforts.

In this dissertation we take a peer-to-peer approach to deal with two specific issues, fair trading and file distribution, arisen from data management for cloud computing. In mobile cloud computing environment cloud providers may collaborate with each other and essentially organize some dedicated resources as a peer to peer sharing system. One well-known problem in such peer to peer systems with exchange of resources is free riding. Providing incentives for peers to contribute to the system is an important issue in peer to peer systems. We design a reputation-based fair trading mechanism that favors peers with higher reputation. Based on the definition of the reputation used in the system, we derive a fair trading policy. We evaluate the performance of reputation-based trading mechanisms and highlight the scenarios in which they can make a difference. Distribution of data to the resources within a cloud or to different collaborating clouds efficiently is another issue in cloud computing. The delivery efficiency is dependent on the characteristics of the network links available among these network nodes and the mechanism that takes advantage of them. Our study is based on the Global Environment for Network Innovations (GENI), a testbed for researchers to build a virtual laboratory at scale to explore future Internets. Our study consists of two parts. first, we characterize the links in the GENI network. Even though GENI has been used in many research and education projects, there is no systematic study about what we can expect from the GENI testbeds from a performance perspective. The goal is to characterize the links of the GENI networks and provide guidance for GENI experiments. Second, we propose a peer to peer approach to file distribution for cloud computing. We develop a mechanism that uses multiple delivery trees as the distribution structure, which takes into consideration the measured performance information in the GENI network. files are divided into chunks

High frequency Trading (HfT) represents an ever growing proportion of all financial transactions as most markets have now switched to electronic order book systems. This dissertation proposes a novel methodology to analyze idiosyncrasies of the high frequency market microstructure and embed them in classical continuous time models. The main technical result is the derivation of continuous time equations which generalize the self-financing relationships of frictionless markets to electronic markets with limit order books. We use NASDAQ ITCH data to identify significant empirical features such as price impact and recovery, rough paths of inventories and vanishing bid-ask spreads. Starting from these features, we identify microscopic identities holding on the trade clock, and through a diffusion limit argument, derive continuous time equations which provide a macroscopic description of properties of the order book. These equations naturally differentiate between trading via limit and market orders. We give several applications to illustrate their impact and how they can be used to the benefit of Low frequency Traders (LfTs). In particular, option pricing and market making models are proposed and solved, leading to new insights as to the impact of limit orders and market orders on trading strategies.

A Realist Ethnography of Nuclear Security Officer Culture

This realist ethnography describes the heretofore unexamined culture of commercial nuclear power security officers over a one-year period from an active participant observer’s perspective. Data include field notes taken during observations at various sites and 15 interviews with security leaders working at or who had recently worked at 12 different commercial nuclear power plants and had previously worked at a dozen other commercial nuclear power plants, thus representing a broad overview of the commercial nuclear security culture. The data also include more than 58 unclassified documents from these sites, industry organizations, and regulatory agencies. An analysis of the data reveals 16 key themes that are characteristic of the nuclear security officer culture. The study describes how, although safety and security are of paramount concern at a commercial nuclear plant, the cultures of security workers and safety workers differ significantly. Not only is the nuclear security officer culture different from that of the safety culture at the same plant, but it often conflicts with it in its attitudes, goals, procedures, supervision, and job satisfaction. The commercial nuclear security officer culture is unique in many ways, including the isolation of security officers— institutionally, physically, and socially—from the other plant workers; their working conditions and benefits; their need to work oftentimes long, boring, unpredictable shifts and carry heavy equipment to remote sites; and their responsibility to respond immediately and, if necessary, with deadly force, even putting their lives on the line. Supplementing the data analysis, and in keeping with a realistic ethnography, are a series of vignettes describing the typical day in a nuclear security officer’s life. The study also points out differences between the commercial nuclear security culture and that of the private non-nuclear security cultures. This dissertation critically examines the social and medical perceptions of nineteenth-century British aural surgery,a subset of medical practice providing treatments for aural diseases. Tracing the efforts of a particular group of London-based aural practitioners ("aurists") and their visions of a specialist identity,this dissertation explores how medical legitimacy was founded within a field constantly battling accusations of charlatanry. As aurists fiercely competed with each other for positions,status,and patients,accusations of quackery weakened their attempts to forge authority as skilled experts. Questions of credibility grazed the boundaries between authority and legitimacy as aurists not only defended their speciality from the broader medical occupation,but also from a social prejudice that deemed deafness medically incurable. Aurists thus used the rhetoric of "medical science" to invoke particular representations on how they wanted to define their surgical authority and be perceived by the broader medical community. from an examination of various strategies aurists used to construct their surgical authority,this dissertation highlights the resonances between quackery,entrepreneurialism,and legitimatization;"quack" was a highly ambiguous term generally used to disqualify an adversary or competitor,or to dismiss a particular medical procedure or technology. This dissertation is divided into five chapters,with each chapter showcasing the varied ways in which aurists constructed their identity and shaped their claims to legitimacy: from publicly disputing rules against medical intervention at deaf asylums,creating specialty hospitals,increasing publications of aural treatises,and developing newer diagnostic,therapeutic,and assistive instruments.

The financial economics profession has determined that identical agents in a dynamic,stochastic,general equilibrium (DSGE) model does not provide price and trading dynamics realized in financial markets. There has been quite a bit of research over the last three decades extending heterogeneity to the Lucas asset pricing framework,to address this issue. Once the assumption of homogeneous agents is relaxed,the problem becomes increasingly complex due to a state space including the wealth distribution,continuation utilities,and wealth distribution dynamics. To establish a more computationally feasible model,specical modifications have been made such as heterogeneity in idiosyncratic shocks and not risk aversion,including aggregate or idiosyncratic risk (but not both),or assuming no growth in the economy (steady state). In this research,I will define a DSGE model with heterogeneous agents. This heterogeneity will refer to differing CRRA utilities through risk aversion. The economy will have growth due to the assumed dividend process. Agents will face idiosyncratic and aggregate shocks in a complete markets setting. The framework of the provided algorithm will enable issues to be addressed beyond homogeneous agent models. The numerical simulation results of this model provide considerable asset price volatility and high trading volume. These results occur even in the complete markets setting,where investors are expected to fully insure. Given these dynamics from the simulations of the algorithm,I demonstrate the ability to calibrate this model to address specific financial economic issues,such as the equity premium puzzle. More importantly this exercise will assume realistic agent parameters of risk aversion and discount factors,relative to economic theory.

Spirituality in the Context of Parenthood: A Phenomenological Approach Rachel L. Hedrick Integrating the study of spirituality and religion is of value to the field of psychology because spirituality and religion play such an important role in the lives of many Americans (Pargament, 1999). The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore common themes emerging from lived experiences of spirituality through the lens of parenthood. In order to more fully capture the spirituality of parents, and because there are few studies exploring spirituality in parenthood in the literature, a phenomenological inquiry of parents' spiritual experience was used. Given the intricacies of parenthood, what are the experiences of parents' spirituality? A modified van Kaam method by Moustakas (1994) with semi-structured interviews was employed to explore the lived experiences of 10 parents from the Chicagoland area. The data obtained from the interviews suggest that several parents experienced an increased depth in their spirituality since becoming a parent. further, several parents reported an increased dependence on, or need for there to be a God. Participants indicated that their love for their child has impacted their relationship with, and understanding of, God. The results from this study support the notion that the spirituality of parents is influenced by both the process of becoming a parent, and communicating with ones child, thus providing support for the notion that parent-child communication about religion is reciprocal and bilateral with mutual influence. The results from this study may inform mental health professionals, the public, and religious organizations about how religion and spirituality can be used in family work, such as in prevention and intervention. My dissertation "Seventy Years of Swearing upon Eric the Skull: Genre and Gender in Selected Works by Detection Club Writers Dorothy L. Sayers and Agatha Christie" shows how the texts produced by Detection Club members Dorothy L. Sayers and Agatha Christie challenge assumptions about the value and role of popular genre fiction and demonstrate how the detective novel engages pressing social issues related to gender in modern Great Britain. Sayers and Christie addressed serious concerns of gender in relation to topics including war and an emerging market economy in inter-war Britain; however, because they were doing so in genre fiction, their insights have not been fully explored. The popularity of detective fiction, according to critics, has resulted in a lack of criticism and a distrust of the popular. Christie, more so than Sayers, has been ignored by critics because of her popularity and the formulaic nature of her fiction. Glenwood Irons claims that Christie's popularity is responsible for the "general ignorance of the sheer volume of detective fiction written by women" (xi), while Alison Light theorizes that the dearth of Christie criticism, because of her popularity, is "an absence which the growth of 'genre' studies of popular fiction has yet to address" (64). My goal is to understand how Sayers and Christie responded to modern issues through their writing and to set their writing in context with contemporary concerns in inter-war Britain. I advocate for a reexamination of Sayers and Christie that goes beyond their popularity as writers of genre fiction and analyzes the ways in which their fiction incorporates modern concerns.
